    1. Female factory Bathurst
    2. Roger & Helen Hanson
    3. Thought some of you might enjoy reading this extract from the Journal of the grandaughter of John & Mary Jaggers. It sounds as if Mary was very unsuited for the job of Matron. Regards Helen Hanson "John was as I said teller in the bank & Mary, sweet, soft, timid, little woman, brave only if with her back to the wall, hard or stern never, Mary applied for & got this position of Matron of the "Factory" why it was so called I do not know, nothing was made there. It was a huge building in which convict women were housed when turned in to Govt; in addition women who were waiting assignment were kept there. It was a huge building 2 or three stories high a veritable prison with high walls enclosing paved yards. There was a pump & the water was pumped from a well. Grandma became Matron at 40 pounds per year & keep for herself & family, part of her duties were to see that the women served the additional sentences bestowed when they were "turned in", to see they were locked in their dormitories at sundown & the keys were all on a big iron ring ( more of this anon ) Things went swimmingly, by this time my mother was eight & there were John, & Lizzie, others had been born ( one every year ) & died. At this time a regiment of soldiers were in Bathurst & the town boasted one policeman a little fellow called Micky Delaney, also Bob the pieman who used to hawk home made pies, lollypops & toffees in the streets, Billy was a big billygoat & the boys soon taught him to upset Bob & his tray of goodies, the moment the goat met the pieman down would go his head ready to butt poor old Bob, he ( Bob) would at first plead, presently he'd swear & the first swear was apparently the cue for the goat who would make his charge upsetting poor old Bob & the goodies would scatter, the boys grabbed; the poor goat could only use his mouth would try to hold some of the things with his feet. Bob would gather what he could & go off swearing. Rum seemed to be in abundance & one Sat night soldiers filled bladders with it & threw them over the wall, they raised ladders against the wall & threw others over, the women - many of them - drank the rum & some of them got away. On the Sunday morning John was dressing for church in a new suit of yellow corderoy cloth called Nankin, a big Irish woman Rose Clancy, demanded the keys from the Matron, poor little Mary refused She put her hand through the ring & gripped the keys hard, Clancy, half dressed and wholly mad, with her bodice torn partly off, took wrist keys & all in one hand gripping Mary's fore arm in her other hand lifted it above the corners of the table & said "Give up the keys will ye" "No,said Mary I'll die first" "Give them up dam ye or I"ll break your arrum" "Never" said Mary. Just then a woman who remembered some of the kindnesses Mary had shown them opened her mouth and took a bite of Rose Clancys big fat shoulder by that time John & Micky Delany appeared, the women made short work of John, Stripped him to the neckband of his shirt & he disappeared for decencys sake, Micky they took out to the pump yard threw him on his face his only weapon was a broadsword as long as himself. They sat, one on his head, one on his feet while a third beat him with the flat of his sword . Poor Micky when escorting anyone to lock up would say, "Let me persuade you" so while they beat him he was crying out "Women have mercy" & they were saying "Let me persuade you". However an officer arrived with detachment of men & order was restored, but many women escaped, a few were caught a few gave themselves up some were taken prisoners with bushrangers & some were never caught. Mary had to appear before the magistrates & resign her position."

If that is the case, then I do apologise. Please accept this as my thanks for your help. Kind regards, Debbi in Dubai

    3. Hi Lisa Strange isn't it that Talbot Hill seems to be the only one who read your message as an offer to sell instead of your kind offer to swap. I'm sure people who live nearby each other swap quite happily without feeling that they are cheating. Thanks for all the great replies and I hope these make him read well before commenting in future. 3. Dear Listers. Why were CD burners invented ? ?. I think Talbot and the head librarian at a library I go to sometimes would make a pigeon pair. She was bewailing the fact the computers were no longer made to take CDs in a caddy case. I brightly said I could get access to a CD burner and I could get the libraries expensive originals copied for daily use. She was appalled at such a suggestion . 3. Robyn - you could try writing to the Life Saving Club at Narrabeen. I would be most surprised if there was no requirement to keep some sort of log of events - especially rescues. You could also refer to daily Newspapers from the following day + 2 more to see if the story was newsworthy enough for publication, or Narrabeen local papers, if they are accessible. It is possible the surfers were known to the Lifeguards, as it does sound as if they could have been local and regular surfers, as they obviously knew the waters there, and were skilled at surfing. I do hope you find them - oooops, another thought. What about the 'Where are they now?' column in the Australian Women's Weekly? That is also worth a shot, I think. cheers, Nandina ----- Original Message ----- From: Robyn & Robert Kelly <rrkelly@origin.net.au> To: <AUSTRALIA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 19, 2001 10:08 PM Subject: rescue from the surf 30 years ago > Dear listers, > This may seem a little off topic but I need some assistance if possible. > > Boxing Day thirty years on Narrabeen beach a friend of mine was rescued from > the surf at by two surfers (one male and one female). 3. Dear Lisa, It's a great idea but perhaps you would be happy to do look-ups for people rather than post out your discs. I have the 1881 British Census, Vital Records Index and other bits and pieces and would be happy to do look ups. Perhaps we should set up a list of those who have information and would be willing to share. I am certainly saving your email and details of what you have available..... In fact I am looking for a Frederick Arthur Donald Cameron born 1908 last heard of in Brisbane. Looking for his marriage to ? Up to now I have only researched UK so I'm a bit lost. Just wanted to let people know that if anyone out there is researching the MEAD/E name here in Australia and is having some troubles, please feel free to e-mail me on my private line and I'll do what I can to help out. 3. Mr. Talbot. We got your point but you couldv'e been a bit polite in your opinion. Guess everyone, it is now out of the question for anyone on the list to ask SKS for a look up on C.D's. We are all "cheats" by asking or helping!!!!!!!! One other thing Mr. Talbot maybe you should read the last email more carefully. Nothing is mentioned about bidding.. As for cooling down, go take a shower!!!!. Shae Honess

    1. To Lisa - Re Talbot Hill
    2. Judy Rowe
    3. Dear Lisa I thought that what you suggested was an extremely generous offer (as it sounds like you have already "loaned out" your CD before) and people like Talbot Hill need to be put into a room with people like Mr Garry Wilson, who attacked me on line a couple of weeks back for asking for help on this list. I believe the two of them would go well together. Unfortunately, I don't have any CD's at all otherwise I would be more than happy to do loans with you. I only wish more people were as kind and generous as you. It would certainly make the searching for our ancestors a lot easier especially for us newbies. All the best, take care and ignore people who obviously "Boil over" at the thought of some-one being able to trace their ancestors maybe a little bit easier than what they were able to do.... 3. Dear listers, This may seem a little off topic but I need some assistance if possible. Boxing Day thirty years on Narrabeen beach a friend of mine was rescued from the surf at by two surfers (one male and one female). He was aged 14 years at the time and English nationality. The rescuers never stayed around very long and Paul was not able to thank them for saving his life. His uncle and sister were also rescued from the surf at the same time by lifeguards. Paul would like to thank these people but the difficulty is not knowing who they were. Can anyone suggest where the best place would be to publish his story, in hope that these people may see it. Thanks for any assistance. Robyn Robyn Kelly Echuca, Victoria rrkelly@origin.net.au
