Hi All, Sometime ago several people mentioned a photographic book named "The Mechanical Eye". I have been unable to locate it in local bookshops here & was hoping someone may be able to direct me to where they found their copies. After visiting my parents interstate over the holidays, I have found close to 20 photos of people that I cannot identify. Thought this book might help me date some of them by the studios involved. Many thanks, Gina HAMMOND- In Australia & New Zealand http://hometown.aol.com/ginahammond/myhomepage/heritage.html

Dear Listers, Has anyone in Australia or New Zealand come across the name PERTILL? I am checking for a researcher in England who has supplied the following details: "My mother was born in the workhouse in Manchester in 1904 her mother was Ellen (Nelly) a domestic servent of Manchester, no father. My mother was taken into care and sent to Canada at the age of 9yrs. She never saw her mother again. I have checked the Victorian CD's but there are no entries under the name PERTILL. Would anyone who has CD's from other states and any New Zealand records please do a look-up. If anyone can assist with a lookup of the following name in the unassisted immigration records for Victoria I would be forever grateful. I have checked assisted immigrants indexes for NSW and Vic but all to no avail. Lawrence BARNETT and wife Catherine Barnett (nee Houlihan) came to Australia (probably Victoria rather than NSW) at some stage between their marriage in Ireland in 1836 and somewhere around the late 1840's or early 1850's. N.B. I did fine one reference to Lawrence which had him recorded as Maurice so that name is also a possibility. As Canberra is a long way from Melbourne and access to the required records is not available here I thought I would post a plea/request for help with a lookup. My thanks in advance if you are able and willing to help. Ian Ian Loiterton Canberra, ACT, Australia Researching Douglas, Hand, Loiterton, Palmer, Ramsey, Youlten
My gg grandfather Alfred WATERS married Kate RIVETT in Kent, England abt.1868. According to a local 1891 census Kate was originally from Australia, possibly Holbosh Town born abt.1848. I was hoping that someone may be able to tell me something about Holbosh town and it's whereabouts. I have had two people suggest that this could be Hobart Town, Tasmania but I am completely stuck. Also, I believe that another WATERS (Samuel) moved to Australia during the early 1900's. I would be interested to hear from anyone researching the WATERS name in or around the County of Kent, England. Thanks Colin Waters
Hello, I wish to find out details of a gentleman who was named PATTERSON, and who had a daughter called CORONA who married Henry James FEAKES (1876 - 1950) who became an Admiral in the Royal Australian Navy. Patterson ran a horse named SOLUTION in the 1906 Melbourne Cup. I believe that Patterson owned a station which was also called Corona. I shall be grateful for any response and If there is a more appropriate mailing list for this query, please let me know. Dear list, I found a reference to one of my people on the Assisted immigrants to Port Phillip microfiche. When I accessed the actual passenger list, I was surprised to see that it was a ship full of 'exiles' from Pentonville prison. The ship, the Anna Maria, landed in Geelong on the 23 June 1848. Does anyone know if exiles is just another word for convict? Were these people taken from the ship and incarcerated for the duration of their sentence, or were they simply set free in Australia, on a sort of good behavior bond as implied by the term 'exile' ? The charges seemed very minor...they were not murderers or anything more than petty thieves in the list I read. I would be very interested to hear more about the system of transportation to Victoria, as hither to I had not realized that Victoria was a penal colony. Thank you Kay McCullough
Does anyone on the list know what area the "Goulburn Circuit, in the County of Argyle, NSW" encompassed - the year being 1846. (this information was taken from my gg burial certificate under 'Where ceremony performed") With thanks Colleen Central Coast

Hello Joy, > Hallo List, > I believe Tasmanian BDM certificates are available for the cost of > photocopying at various places around Australia. (I have a list of > addresses) > Do any of these places take mail orders or do we have to attend > personally? The Archives Office of Tasmania will copy and send you the certificates if you ask them. I'm not sure of their charges, but it's something like $22-00 (pre-GST?) for five copies. I believe the staff in the Reference Section o the Northern Regional Library in Launceston will also do it, but I don't know what they charge.
