Hi folks A big thanks to all you fabulous listers who responded to my plea for help on JAN WILLIAMS (nee SAY) who we have lost touch with in Oz. This didn't surprise me in the slightest as I am on several lists in the UK and receive great help from other listers. I am also presently helping several people in Oz trace their ancestors back here in Oxfordshire. I am totally convinced that listers are some of the friendliest and helpful people around. This has also stopped the missus from whingeing (a well know Brit trait) about the time I spend "on list". Well done to you all, you know who you are! Kind regards Julian
Yes the Eventide Home does still exist . You should be able to get address and phone number from www.telstra.com.au , I haven't got it here . As for the transcipt of the cemetery if you do find one I would love to know about it myself. Subject: Query regarding book: Mechanical Eye > Sometime ago several people mentioned a photographic book named "The > Mechanical Eye". I have been unable to locate it in local bookshops here & > was hoping someone may be able to direct me to where they found their copies. The Mechanical Eye in Australia, photography 1841-1900 by Alan Davies & Peter Stanbury published1985, Oxford University Press Melbourne ISBN - 0- 19 - 554604 - 0 It's not cheap, I think still available at Gould Books of South Australia who have a web site (I don't have the URL at present as I/m offline). I am researching my great grandmother Mary NORTON, and her apparent partner of several years James CLAY. James was a bootmaker in Queenstown in the late 1890's and early 1900's, his father Richard was a bootmaker in the Kempton area (previously a convict from the "Nile"). From the electoral rolls and valuation rolls it appears that James and Mary lived together for several years, James' wife Mary (nee McNamara) had died in 1901. Mary had four children in Queenstown, Myrtle Lavinia born 1903, registered as NORTON, baptised 1904 as NORTON James Edward Clarence born 1904, registered as NORTON, baptised 1905 as CLAY Evelyn Dorothy born 1905, registered as CLAY, baptised 1912 in Hobart as NORTON Cecil Ronald born 1910, registered as NORTON, died 1910 It appears that James was the father of James junior and Evelyn, but possibly not the father of Myrtle and Cecil ? Mary later married Thomas Henry BUDD in Hobart in 1913, and they had four children, Mary died in Hobart in 1923. Does anyone have any connections or information ? Ray Hayes Hobart, Tasmania, Australia Researching HAYES, NORTON, CLAY, DEACON, DELVE, SIDNEY, McCLURE, THORNE
I am researching my great great grandfather William HAYES, who married Jane MCCLURE at Hadspen in 1861. Children were William born about 1861 at Longford, married 1. Elizabeth ROWE in 1885 at Deloraine, 2. Florence Louisa CORNICK in 1893 at Penguin, and 3. Agnes Eleanor/Helena BRETT in 1900 at Ulverstone. Jacob Henry (Henry) born 1863 at Longford, married Ann SMITH in 1884 at Ulverstone. Edmund born 1865 at Longford, married Agnes KAINE in 1889 at Penguin. Charles born 1866 at Longford, died 1867. Theophilus Adair (born Samuel) born 1868 at Longford, married Harriett Louisa DICKER in 1904 at Penguin. William senior was a convict, supposedly from the "Anson", who left Jane and the children about 1869, the three boys were subsequently placed in the Queens Orphanage, Hobart in 1872. There is no William HAYES listed on the "Anson", but there was one on the "Asiatic", and several events, places and dates suggest they may have been the same person ? Does anyone have any connections or information ? Ray Hayes Hobart, Tasmania, Australia Researching HAYES, NORTON, CLAY, DEACON, DELVE, SIDNEY, McCLURE, THORNE
I am researching my great grandfather Christopher DEACON, and his brother Godfrey, and sister Esther. Edward and Esther DEACON arrived in Australia on the "Norfolk" in 1874, with their children Godfrey, Esther and Christopher. I think some older children came out separately, but am not sure yet. Edward was a watchmaker in Little Collins Street, Russell Street, and later Chapel Street, Prahran. Godfrey married Dora LAWRENCE in 1886 in South Melbourne ? Victoria, no children found. Godfrey was a sewing machinist in the Sands & McDougall directory of 1878. Esther married Alfred William WEBB in 1885 in Victoria, known children were Alfred Harold born 1886 in Carlton, died 1887 in Richmond Edward John born 1887 in Port Melbourne, died 1889 in Brunswick Esther born and died 1889 in Brunswick East Rosaline Verlly born 1892 in Brunswick Thomas Livinston born 1898 in Foster Robert James born 1900 in Foster, died 1960 ? Esther died in 1900 near Foster, did Alfred WEBB re-marry ? Christopher married Alicia Eleanor ROARK in 1889 in Shepparton. children were John Albert (Bert) born 1890 in Lilydale, married Sarah Ann/Jane PULFORD Edward Leighton (Ted) born 1891 in South Melbourne, married Minnie DEACON Alfred Francis (Alf) born 1894 in Brunswick, married Myrtle Olga BRANSGROVE Emily Eleanor (Em) born 1895 in Werribee, married George CARRIS Florence Christina (Flo) born 1900 in North Melbourne, married Charles Gordon DOLPHIN Reginald George (Reg) born 1901 in North Melbourne, married Louisa Maud BRYANT Christopher was a plumber and gasfitter, and apparently a bit of an inventor. Christopher apparently left his family in the early 1900's, and I have been unable to find any further trace of him (or Godfrey). Did they go somewhere together ? Does anyone have any connections or information ? Ray Hayes Hobart, Tasmania, Australia Researching HAYES, NORTON, CLAY, DEACON, DELVE, SIDNEY, McCLURE, THORNE
I am researching my great great grandmother's brother who was born Edmund MCCLURE, but was later known as Edward EDMONDS, and most of their children were registered as EDMONDS in Victoria. Does anyone have any connections or information ? Known children were; William James MCCLURE, born and died 1875 Northcote, Victoria Edwin John EDMONDS, born about 1876/77, married 1902 to Mary Elizabeth SMITH known children Dorothy May born 1903, Victoria Norman Reg born 1904, Victoria John Richard born 1913, Victoria Mary Jane EDWARDs, born 1879 Port Melbourne, Victoria, married Samuel John AYLETT 1898 in Tasmania as Mary Jane MCCLURE. Sarah Elizabeth (Jean) EDMONDS born 1881 Richmond, Victoria, married 1918 Victoria to Adrian Everard GANGE, known children Adrain GANGE born 1914, Victoria Walter James EDMONDS, born and died 1884 Richmond, Victoria Walter Ernest EDMUNDS, born 1885 Richmond, Victoria, married 1920 Victoria to Myrtle Phyllis TURNBULL. William Henry EDMONDS, born 1887 Richmond, Victoria, married 1912 Victoria to Iris Stella ROBERTSON, known children Clyde Stanley born 1913 Victoria. Ethel Madeline MCCLURE, born 1890 Ulverstone, Tasmania, married ? WRIGHT. Edward EDMONDS, Batchelor ??, married Christina MITCHELL 1902 Melbourne, Victoria, known children Lilian Maude EDMONDS born 1902 Carlton, Victoria. I have been unable to find a death or divorce for Mary EDMONDS nee CONNOR. When Edmund died, his death was registered as Edward Edmonds MCCLURE. Julian, Further to Judy's suggestion might I suggest you try contacting the Australian Electoral Commission ...... they are freely available for public viewing here in OZ...... not sure how you would go about it when you are out of the country. Perhaps they would answer an email enquiry ?? I would offer but I do not have one close by ( ie within a 2 hour drive) GLGH cheers Jennifer

Hi listers We have lost a friend in Queensland due to loss of address and were hoping someone could at least point us in the right direction. Jan SAY from Oz married Terry Williams from Gloucester in the UK and they moved back to their last known address in Bracken Ridge, Queenland aprox 1997/98. Terry was an accountant by occupation. Being a UK lister I thought it might pay to ask if anybody could at least point us to a web site to try to track her down as we are desperate to make contact. Knowing how helpful listers are from my own experience maybe someone out there can help? Kind regards from a cold and wet (as usual) UK Julian Rogers
Does the wording on a marriage notice in SMH 'married at the Court House, by special license" mean anything sinister? (the 'by special licence' - what did it mean) The date was March 1853 in Aubury NSW. Colleen Central Coast
