Does anyone know if exiles is just another word for convict? Were these people taken from the ship and incarcerated for the duration of their sentence, or were they simply set free in Australia, on a sort of good behavior bond as implied by the term 'exile' ? The charges seemed very minor...they were not murderers or anything more than petty thieves in the list I read. > > I would be very interested to hear more about the system of transportation to Victoria, as hither to I had not realized that Victoria was a penal colony. > A quick reply: The preamble & postscript may tell you most of what you want to know: ** "Whereas the following persons are under Sentence of Transportation, they having been convicted of felony at the times and places hereafter mentioned, viz Joseph Archer at Walsingham in March 1845.................." " We, in Consideration of some Circumstances humbly represented unto Us, are Graciously pleased to extend Our Grace and Mercy unto the several persons above named, and to grant them Our Pardon for the crimes of which they stand Convicted, on Condition that they be conveyed as soon as conveniently may be, to Port Phillip in Our Territory of Australia - that they do not return to Our United Kingdom during the remaining term of their respective Sentences of Transportation - and that they shall continue under the Said Sentences until they arrive at Port Phillip aforesaid, when this Our Pardon shall take effect - Given at Our Court of St James's the Twenty Ninth day of December 1846 in the Tenth Year of Our Reign" "To Our Trusty and Wellbeloved The Lieutenant Governor of Our Island of Van Dieman's Land; The Governor of Our Territory of New South Wales; The Superintendent of Port Phillip in Our Said Territory, and all others whom it may concern" "By Her Majesty's Command" (countersigned by Earl Grey) 1727 of these exiles went to Port Phillip, other ships went to VDL and a couple to NSW, one of which, I think was diverted to Moreton Bay. By my study of these men, 1 in 7 returned to crime (i.e. were caught!), so the experiment was not a total disaster. However I have seen police reports on several who should have been imprisoned, but managed to evade it. These men served time and learned a trade: mat maker, rug maker, basket maker, bootmaker, carpenter, tailor, and the idea was that they were being given the chance to start a new life without the stigma of their background. 2. Julian Rogers
    3. Sorry but not having much success in finding Jan Williams, perhaps someone will know her as Jan Say whose parents lived at 16 Parkmore Street Boondall 4034 Queensland Austria This was prior to her marrying an English man from Gloucestershire. She eventually had 3 childrent 2 boys and one girl, believe she was training to be a Nursery Nurse? However, did know that they had a computer so perhaps she is on the internet??? We would very much like to trace her and Terry as explained he was training or we would image by now a fully trained Accountant. Jan would be in late 40s early 50s. Terry about the same. Perhaps someone out their knows of her parents, as they lived in the same address for quite a long time and maybe still there. Sorry for putting you people to so much trouble, but lost contact with them when we moved house just over three years ago, you know, threw out a lot of letters etc prior to move. Thank you for trying to help. 1. SUFFOLK, Owen Hargrave
    2. G & J Cunningham
    3. Anyone researching Owen Hargrave SUFFOLK? this may be of interest. From Clunes Gazette November 1868. The gushing gentleman who wrote “Days of Crime and Years of Suffering” for the Australasian has a length met with his deserts. One of the English papers just to hand contained the following:- Owen Hargrave Suffolk, described in the calendar as a journalist pleaded guilty to stealing a black mare a phaeton, and a set of harness, belonging to the landlady of the White Horse Hotel, Ipswhich, and also to obtaining L10 by means of false pretences from one Arthur Gibbons. It appeared from a document handed in by the learned counsel for the prosecution, Mr. Sims Reeve, that in the year 1846 the prisoner had been sentenced to transportation and penal servitude for twenty-nine years and a half. When called upon to say why judgement should not be passed on him, he begged for mercy on account of his wife, aged nineteen and her infant child. The Chief Justice: “Don’t try to impose on me. I know your career. You were married to a widow, obtained her property, deserted her, pretended by a false report inserted in a newspaper that you were drowned, went away with your brother’s child, who cannot therefore by your wife.” (The prisoner here interrupting said, “she is my wife, My Lord.”) “Then,” said his lordship, “if you did marry her, you have added bigamy to your other offences, and I sentence you now to a term of fifteen years penal servitude.” Hope it helps someone untangle a family tree. 1. Re:more re early schools
    2. E. A. Roberts
    3. Friday 19 Jan a question was asked about early schools in NSW and answered from "Sydney and the Bush" an exellent source re schooling but further to what was written. There were a number of schools run by the Anglican Church pre 1848 and funded by the government. Records re funding at State Records. Ebenezer church (Presbyterian) built 1809 was also used as a school room. The government orphanages run schools. Govenor King established the first. Children from the orphanages were apprenticed out aged about 12.( Not all children in the orphanages were orphans. Children accompanying female convicts post mid 1820s were placed in the orphanage, soldiers whose wives died put their children in the orphanage.) Children in the orphange were educated and trained in employable skills. Some children were sent to work from about age 9. There are children in the 1828 Census listed as working aged 9. A 9 year old girl was considered quite capable of minding babies and young children. Assistered immigrants children of 12 to 14 were considered old enough to be sent to work seperate from thier parents. The early schols were in the settled area, ie in 1820s there were schools in the Hawkesbury but not the Hunter- Another excellent source post 1848 is "Government School of New South Wales" in several additions the latest is 1848-to 1998. Most NSW public Libraries would have a copy. This book lists when every government school was started and what sort of school it was. A full public school a provisional or half time school. In the front there explanations of how many pupils were required for each type, this changed over time.- Elizabeth A. Roberts N.S.W. Genealogical and Historical Research Wahroonga NSW
