    3. Hi Robyn, I was interested to see your mention of the FOLETTA family. I'm not a descendant but my 3 great aunt Maria Caterina Geltrude VOSTI married Domenico Gaspare FOLETTA in Gerra Verzasca Switzerland in 1797, so I'd have distant FOLETTA cousins. I'd love to swap notes. Cheers Jan >I am seeking info re the Foletta family. Other spellings include >Folletta, Folitte, Foretta, Folitta and Folletti. 1. Sailing from Australia to the USA 1864 -What Route?
    2. Judith Neville
    3. Hi Listers, Can anyone tell me what route a ship would have taken going to the USA in 1864, and also the approximate length of the voyage? Departure was from Newcastle. Possibly the port of arrival may have been San Francisco but that is not a certainty. My 2xg visited his sister in Evansville, IN. so would San Francisco have been a likely port for that? 2. Denise McMahon
    3. From my gg's diary of 1862/63 he sailed to San Fran. I don't know if he left from Melbourne or Sydney. the trip to San Fran took 85 days but during by the time the voyage was at an end they were very short of water and out of a lot of other things. He was headed for Massachusetts and had intended to go by coach across the US (what a journey!!) but was warned not to because the Indians were hostile at that time. He caught a ship to Panama, "cars" across to Aspinwall and then another ship past Cuba and up the east coast of America into New York this took 9 days. To return some months later he left New York and the ship came down the Atlantic and across the Indian passing Heard Island and into Melbourne. From then on, his journeys always seem to take him to San Fran but he came home from the west coast by various routes including thru London. He did many trips around the world. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judith Neville" <judespot@senet.com.au> To: <AUSTRALIA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 31, 2001 10:21 PM Subject: Sailing from Australia to the USA 1864 -What Route? > ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judith Neville" <judespot@senet.com.au> To: <AUSTRALIA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 31, 2001 10:21 PM Subject: Sailing from Australia to the USA 1864 -What Route? > Hi Listers, > > Can anyone tell me what route a ship would have taken > going to the USA in 1864, and also the approximate > length of the voyage? 3. Mari, Civil Registration came in 1st July 1837 in UK. After that date you should expect to find a death certificate. Prior to that, information would be given in parish records, on a Monumental Inscription and perhaps in a newspaper obituary. The CHESHIRE-L mailing list has a very helpful set of people.
