The 1839 Trial of Cornelius Hickey and William Walshe for the murder of Austin Cooper and W.V.Weyland (Wayland) gives an example of naming patterns in Co Tipperary, especially in regard to the habit of adopting an extra name for distinction from relatives of the same name, within family groups. The evidence of John Ryan (also known as John Ryan Patrick) reveals the following: 1.Cornelius Hickey (on trial) was also known as Con Hickey Michael (because his father was Michael Hickey) (nb.according to cousin Margaret Carty, Cornelius was also known amongst the family as 'Michael's Con' to distinguish him from his cousin Cornelius Hickey , known as 'Pat's Con' as he was the son of Patrick Hickey.) (according to court transcript, Cornelius Hickey's mother's maiden name appears to be Ryan.) 2.The same Michael Hickey (father of Con Hickey Michael) was known as Michael Hickey Barna, because the place the family came from was Barna ( though in 1838 he had been a tenant farmer of Wayland's at Kilmore, Co Tipperary). 3.Pat Hickey was the uncle of Con Hickey (and brother Michael).(according to Margaret Carty, a niece of Pat's.the latter had son's Daniel Hickey, Cornelius Hickey (known as Paddy's Con) and Denis Hickey, and a daughter Hannah Hickey.(so these were all cousins of Cornelius Hickey Michael) 4 Another relative of Cornelius Hickey Michael was Dan Hickey of Ballywater. (Cornelius was sentenced to be executed. His sister dropped dead in the street when he was sentenced). 5.John Ryan (known also as John Ryan Patrick) was the son of Thomas Ryan (also known as Thomas Ryan Patrick). 6.Thomas Ryan (also known as Thomas Ryan Patrick) had been a tenant on Waylands estate who had been evicted, 7,John Ryan (also known as John Ryan Corbett) was a relative of the above John and Thomas Ryan who lived at Curraun. 8,John Ryan also known as( John Ryan Mungo), was also a relative of the above Ryans. John Ryan Patrick also used "the Great Snow last February" and "Dick Reardon's funeral" as a means of providing a time frame for a meeting of the above name to plan the murder of Wayland. The Tithes Defaulter's indexes show many such extra additions to a surname. (eg..John Ryan Bawn or John Ryan Beg) and many of these seem as a description of a person e.g..Beag in gaelic means "small amount" but can also mean "slight or little" or "younger, little or wee brother"......so perhaps John Ryan Beg was a slight man, or else the younger brother in a family. The trial of Michael Carty in 1839 reveals that he was known to locals as a "Shaun Baan Carty". And Stormy Petrels were also known as "Mother Carey's chickens".

Hi Would appreciate if someone with access to SA Digger records could see if they can find a marriage of William Trott to Sarah Jane Hulbert circa early 1850's and any children born in SA. I have details of 1856 birth of Lucy Eliza Trott in SA and seven children born in Victoria between 1858 and 1870. Thanks in anticipation. Can anyone find the death of a James Wearin for me? It would be after 1880. I believe he lived in East Maryborough, Queensland. His birth name was William James Wearin but I believe he later used only James Wearin. He was born April 1843 to John and Harriet. Thank you Diane
I am still searching for any information on my grandmother above. She gave birth to my mother in Hillgrove via Armidale in 1898 and was later heard of at Grenfell, NSW at the time of death of her father Dominic Cullen at Emmaville and years later is reported to have never married but been a seamstress in a hotel in Canberra. On my mother's birth certificate as usual in those times, father is shown as unknown, so he is off the hook! but I really would like to know more about Mary Cullen if anyone does. I have discoverd quite a lot about her father, Dominic who served in the Crimea and her grandfather, Patrick William who was transported (later found innocent and charges cleared) for stealing a cow in 1834. He came from Frenchpark, Co. Roscommon in Ireland and is buried at Long Swamp, via Carcoar, NSW. My mother was adopted by the family of John and Harriet Roach in Hillgrove and I am trying to find a connection between the Roach and Cullen families which would have prompted this adoption. Apparently these two family names have often been intermarried but I need the possible specific link. Any help is greatly appreciated Margare Hille
Sorry Diane I do not have that copy but I do have original copies of Tuesday September 7, 1869 and Wednesday September 18, 1872 and Thursday September 19, 1872 if anyone is interested. Regards Marg Hille - Cowra
