    3. source: THE SYDNEY GAZETTE. Feb 1st 1822 "About a fortnight ago a Government grass-cutter,emplooyed in the neighbourhood of Kissing point, was bitten by a black snake, and shortly after died. The only remarkable circumstance attached to this sad event is, that the poor man wore at the time a pair of Parramatta factory cloth trowsers, which are particularly thick and woolly, and thought protective hitherto from the poisonous touch of the reptiles teeth; but that such a defence is no longer to be depended on, is now incontestable proved." best wishes Jenny Fawcett

    3. Mary Ann Warner has been indexing, for some time, CREW and PASSENGER LISTS arriving at Sydney from the 1860's onwards. Mary Ann's indexes online are hosted by the NSW Government. You can search the website by name, place, ship, birthplace, occupation etc.and then you can view the ORIGINAL ship's list to obtain all the details. They are a brilliant source of information for mariners both international and australian. I am currently assisting Mary Ann but she could really do with some assistance. SO if you have a spare hour or two, perhaps you would consider helping out by transcribing just a ship, or a months shipping lists. It is so easy it only took me an hour last night to transcribe ten ships, crew and passengers. The importance of these shipping lists is not only relevant to Australian mariners, but more so to international seamen, as many of the ship's arriving came from overseas ports, and thus include seamen from Britain, America, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Mauritius etc. The crew lists tell you their name, age, occupation and native place. Sometimes, rather than just a country, you get an actual county or town. I found my Theodore Briscaino on two years worth of shipping lists here in Australia, even though he was from Mexico and lived in Liverpool all his adult life. So it is amazing what can be found. So if you think you could help Mary Ann out, and contribute to this invaluable genealogical tool, you can contact her at [email protected] Mary Ann's website is at http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/ best wishes Jenny Fawcett
