    3. I have just been to Tasmania and with the help of contacts through Rootsweb lists and the family History Society I have been to York Town and located the memorial, the site of the parade ground, water hole, location of soldiers' houses etc. The first settlement was set up under Patterson in 1804, and our Thomas Bates (there was another there earlier!) was stationed there from 1807 to 1810 under Grosser and 1 daughter (our line) was born there. I will write up a summary during the week and have taken photos - not yet developed. The locals are working on producing information and a 'muster' later in the year. Contact me off list if your convict soldier served at Port Dalrymple and you would like a copy of my summary. Joan Scanned by PeNiCillin http://safe-t-net.pnc.com.au/

    1. Bates & Brown
    2. Joan Edwards
    3. Hi all, Apologies for being behind with these - been in Tasmania for a few days. BATES - Thomas, as a 15 year old snatched 2 odd boots from a shop, caught and sentenced to 7 years transportation in 1788. Survived the infamous Neptune (2nd fleet), finished sentence, joined the army and served in VDL at Port Dalrymple 1807-1810 - some more on separate entry. Married several children etc. and after leaving army became boatbuilder at Cockle Bay. Died 1836. BROWN - John (yes, one of the dozens and dozens) - stole mourning rings etc in London 1808, got death sentence, reduced to life and arrived on Ann 2 1810. Married Elizabeth Winch 1813, at least 5 children. Painter, glazier etc. Death date unknown - too many to identify correct one, but possibly before the 1828 census. 1. Authors of published family histories
    2. Reid
    3. Hello all, I am posting this call for help to a number of lists, so apologies if you get it more than once. I am now publishing a first edition of my genealogical research aid 'Australian Family Histories : a Bibliography and Index'. It will contain bibliographic details of 3,400+ family histories published in and relevant to Australia, cross-referenced by 59,000+ family name occurrences - it should be delivered from the printers by 14 May. I am already working to upgrade my data for a possible second future edition. Therefor, I am trying to contact, by email, the author/s of any published Australian family history/ies (those that I have not already been in touch with, of course) to ask if they could supply to me a list of the family surnames covered in each of these books - if I get them by email I can transfer them directly into my database without having to re-key them, thus saving time and preventing typing errors. If you have any questions about/input for 'Australian Family Histories' then please contact me at [email protected] Regards Ralph Reid Sydney
