One of my ancestors in Victoria was named a "Gentleman", and his wife a "Lady", on various documents in the 1850's, 60's. In England before their arrival the wife was a domestic servant. He was a mariner. I imagine this terminology was used because he had land and money. I have looked up the dictionary and found this but I don't think he was a man of refined manners. Or how does one know if he was a man well born? 1. A man well born; one of good family; one above the condition of a yeoman. 2. One of gentle or refined manners; a well-bred man. 3. (Her.) One who bears arms, but has no title. 4. The servant of a man of rank. The count's gentleman, one Cesario. --Shak. Any thoughts on this is very much appreciated. Best wishes Amanda - Sydney, NSW.

Thank you very much Bill, Gary & Jenny for such prompt replies and advice for which I am very grateful. These are the family I am searching for but have not found the death of Myer. I found his Naturalization application at the NAA also but didn't realise it was in Victoria so this has opened another door and I will search VIC Deaths, just in case he died there. HAT-History of Australian Theatre www.hat-archive.com HAT contains a 14400 entry database of names of people who were associated with the Australian Theatre between the years 1850-1960. If you had an ancestor in the theatre you may find them here. HAT also has has articles, pictures links and suggestions for further research. Greetings, I have updated the database to 14400. Many of the names I have added come from the late 19th century. Mr Ian Foster has kindly written a biography of his mother Elva Blair, complete with photographs to the site. It's certainly worth a read.Available from the articles page. I have added a page on The Merry Widow production in Australia in 1908. I was fortunate to find a set of photos of this production, the first production of the operetta in Australia. I have also added a page of photos. I am currently moving house, so will be out of contact for a week or so. I do endeavour to reply to all emails, so if you have a question, feel free to email or to post on the messageboard. Hello Listers I have just rejoined the list and am searching for a Polish/Jewish family who arrived in 1887 as Assisted Immigrants. Fanny Fromberg together with her 2 sons, Abraham & David and daughter Rebecca arrived on the SS "Port Victor". Also a Charles Fromberg was on the same ship but I'm not sure if he is another child of Fanny. They were joining her husband Myer FROMBERG who was already in NSW. Rebecca who was only aged 2 when she arrived married Archibald Simmons but I have not found their marriage record. Would their marriage and children's birth's be only recorded at the Jewish Synagogue? I would be delighted to hear from anyone who may have knowledge of this family and their descendants. Dear Angela, I have looked at the Australasian Genealogical Computer Index and found Pauline MAYNARD may have died 1 July 1972. Suggest you look at Ryerson Index for perhaps further information. There are 13 entries for Francis/Frank MAYNARD details which I can extract if you desire. None seem to specifically point to the one suggested by another lister. DITTMAN has two names which may be of interest, a marriage 15 June 1983 mentioning the SYDNEY suburb of AUBURN and the names Ian and Mrs Terri DITTMAN. Again details if you wish. No Gustav or Emma KNABE on AGCI. Sincerely,Bill > I´m looking for Emma and Pauline DITTMANN. They are the sisters of my > great-grandfather.
