    1. Looking for information on NORMAN EDWARDS
    2. Pat Edwards
    3. Hello Listers, Hoping someone can help me with information on Norman Edwards born in 1915 in England. He immigrated to Australia with his wife Beatrice and sons Norman and Graham in 1950. In 1952 the family were living in Myamyn a small country town in the Western District of Victoria. At this time Beatrice left Norman taking the boys with her. Norman was sighted briefly in Horsham at around about this time, but has not been in contact with his family since. Having just made contact with his family in England, I find he hasn't been in contact with them since this time, so it is assumed he stayed in Australia. I know this is a long shot, but one of his sons would like to know what happened to him. Any help would be most appreciated. Regards, Pat.

    1. Electoral rolls
    2. Hi Dianna, Depending on whether it is federal or state electoral rolls you are asking about. Generally, the federal rolls didn't become annual until about 1980's or 90's, so you will find they only published them about the time of an election (approximately every two to three years). Hence, you will not find them every year. For some divisions, they didn't publish them for that year, but might have issued a supplement at a later time, which might contain the divison you require. Just one of those things, unfortunately. You could check post office directories (or phone books), if they exist for the state and time in question, this is an alternative strategy that I use, as they are usually published annually. Hope that assists. Linda Linda Notley Victoria

    2. There is not an electoral roll for every year, electoral rolls were made for that purpose, correct accurate rolls of voters for elections, thus they only needed to be made for the years when there were/are elections. Also you cannot take an electoral roll to be accurate within 12 months, how often has the electoral roll checker knocked on your front door, certainly not every 12 months. People could move and unless they changed their address on the electoral roll they would stay on at the old address until it was changed by an electoral roll checker or by turning up to vote and not being on the roll at the new address. 3. Hello Grant, I'm sorry to inform you that births in NSW are not searchable after 1918. Online at http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/Index/IndexingOrder.cgi/search?event=birth s, the NSW BDMs are available but births are only up to 1905. However, some years ago, they had the records indexed and put onto searchable CDs. Those are the ones that go up to 1918. After that, you need to have the signature of the person to get their birth, or if they are deceased, you need the permission of the nearest of kin, usually the spouse or a child - and it can be any of their children, or if they are all deceased, one of their children, etc. You can try searching for the marriages of the children you are looking for (click on the marriage section on the birth page) and then their deaths and check the parents names to make sure it is the same people you are looking for. You can then get their death certificates and it will tell you their age and place of birth, but it will be according to the memory or knowledge of the person giving the details of the death. 3. Hello Grant, Sherrie replied to your email with: > To my knowledge 'S-17' would not be an Australian code. Our codes are all 4 digits However, historically, each Australian state had its own postcode system e.g. my postcode was "W 15 Victoria" This meant that I lived in an area or suburb to the West of the capital, Melbourne, in area 15, which was Newport. The modern equivalent is "3015 Vic" So what we have here is an old postcode showing that the town (you think is "Largs" ) was situated south of a state capital in area 17. South of the capital of South Australia - Adelaide- is Largs Bay and Largs North, and the modern postcode for both is "5016 South Australia". close to your S 17. 3. Hi Before we had the four digit postcodes we had one letter (N, S, E, W) and two digits, therefore, S12 was Mordialloc in Victoria (S for south of the Melbourne PO). I can remember way back in 1945 when I went to Business School at Melbourne Tech (now of course a university!) we had to memorise ALL the Victorian postcodes. Can remember a few of them but not many 60 years later. Elva

    3. Hi Lynette, I'm very sorry to hear that, I wrongly assumed that the NSW records would be similar to the South Australia ones. I guess we are lucky here in Scotland where you can access any BMD certificates in Edinburgh. However, England is different and I suppose in that respect the UK is not that different from Australia. So my next logical step would be to try and find a good FHS in the Adelaide area. Hello to the List Years ago the "Mail Trains" had a van attached called a Traveling Post Office (TPO) and mail was sorted on route both from and to Sydney NSW I lived in Moree and the mail that came from the TPO had a code N7 this was the bag or bin in the TPO van and made sorting by hand quicker as all mail into Moree had with it the ongoing smaller towns in the area that the mail contractor delivered to, and to the road mail boxes along the road. Mail in the N7 area included places like Pallamallawa Garah Boggabilla and Mungindi From memory the N7 Area covered from Gurley in the south to the Queensland border on the two branch lines out of Moree . Inverell had a different number N8 from memory along with Narrabri and its branch lines having its own number N5. The "N" was for the North West Mail and the designation of the Moree Traveling Post Office was TPO NW N7 DOWN coming out of Sydney and TPO N7 UP going out of Moree to Sydney This applied to all TPO vans S being South SW being South West and so on Maybe this is the "S" reference Regards John Shirley & John Smith Maitland Area Lower Hunter Valley NSW Australia -----Original Message----- From: Colin Jeffery POTTER [mailto:colinjeffery@iprimus.com.au] Sent: Friday, June 16, 2006 12:50 PM To: AUSTRALIA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AUST] Assistance required Hi List, I lived in Williamstown in Victoria and the old Postcode was W16 which then changed to 3016, hoe this helps, Colin Potter in Sunny Queensland (4053) Colin Jeffery Potter, searching for Potter,Preston,Bloodworth,Fowler,Thorpe in Rutlandshire England, Potter,Hurst,Orr,McNally,McMaster Wilson and Hackett in County Tyrone Northern Ireland ----- Original Message ----- From: "Eliz Cook" <divaandwillow@yahoo.com.au> To: <AUSTRALIA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, June 16, 2006 11:29 AM Subject: Re: [AUST] Assistance required > ==== AUSTRALIA Mailing List ==== The address for posting any message to any Rootsweb list is ALWAYS LISTNAME-L@rootsweb.com ============================== Search the US Census Collection. 3. *From the Australia Post web page:Why have postcodes?* Postcodes are allocated to geographic areas to facilitate the efficient processing and delivery of mail to customers. 3. Hi Everyone, So the location is confirmed as Largs Bay in South Australia - thanks to the old postcode (thanks for the explanations) and Peita's information in regard to births. Children of William Adam(s) and Barbara Duncan: Leonard William Adams Gertrude Adams Edna Phyllis Adams Elizabeth McKenzie Adams and 2 others to be found Margaret Adam(s) Female Adam(s) - possibly Elsie I now have names and date of births for four of the six children, the other two girls must have been born before the family moved to Largs Bay. One of them is definitely Margaret Adam(s). I have attempted to order Barbara Adam(s) (nee Duncan) death certificate online and hopefully that works out okay. I will investigate further online. 3. Hi Liz, I'll be 50 in a couple of weeks and I can't remember any codes at all. I vaguely remember the postcodes coming in, but never anything before that. You never had to put it on your letters to post them - or do you disagree. I'm sorry but I don't remember anything other than a town and state being put in an address. Hope we solve this.
