Leah, To find a naturalization record or a passenger list remember & try the following: 1. timeframe your people entered the U.S. a. people who were in U.S. by 1789 were grandfathered as U.S. citizens b. persons who arrived after 1789 or after a territory was annexed by U.S. had to complete a five year residency before naturalization could be completed: did they move around during that time, where did they settle c. most naturalizations prior to 1906 took place in local & state courts as they were closer & more convenient d. naturalizations after 1906: - still had five year residency requirement - went to closest city with federal court 2. National Archives Records Administration (NARA): - note while regional offices only have federal court naturalization records, in some cases they may direct you to the proper local court to contact for pre-1906 records a.
