Just thought I would pass along some information I found yesterday. May be old news to some: Bartholomew Austin was evidently frequently in legal difficulty in Amelia County Virginia. On February 15, 1739 it is noted in Court records that Barth's stock marks were a crop and hole in his right ear and a "flower de luce" in his left. On May 18, 1744 he was ordered placed in the stocks along with a Joseph Hurt, for 1/4 of an hour for "ill behavior." These two notes came from Court Orders of Amelia County, Virginia, Book 1, Mid-South Publishing Co. Amelia, Virginia. Between 1742 and 1745 there are numerous lawsuits and court summons against Barth for bad debts. In November of 1745, Barth must have misbehaved in one of his court trials because he is ordered imprisoned until 3:00 P.M. the next day for such misbehavior in court. This came from an abstract of the Court Orders of Amelia Countyfrom 1735-1746, abstracted and compiled by Gibson Jefferson McConnaughey, Copyright 1985, also Mid-South Publishing.
