    3. I am researching a HUGH AUSTIN (b. ca. 1810) who married JULIA HALEY ca. 1830 either in Lincoln Co., TN or on route in an unknown location. Julia's family-parents CHARLES HALEY and MARY POLLY WALKER and siblings--arrived in Lincoln Co., TN by about 1830 from Rockingham Co., NC (they lived near the Caswell Co. border). Per an article in Goodspeed's History of Poinsett Co., AR about Julia's brother, REV. JEREMIAH T. HALEY, he reported that "Julia was the wife of Hugh Austin, a farmer of Lincoln County, Tenn.; she died at Harrisburg, Ark., about 1879." I have searched high and low for a HUGH AUSTIN. In 1830 there is a HARRIS AUSTIN in LCT, b. bet. 1800-1810, living next door to a much-older DREWRY AUSTIN (b. bet. 1750-1760). By 1840, Harris Austin is in neighboring Bedford Co., TN along with a CHAMNESS AUSTIN (not on same page and relationship, if any, not known). In that census, this Chamness Austin, interestingly, is living next door to a CHARLES HALEY (much younger than father of Julia Haley Austin and relationship to my Haleys unknown, if any). The constellation of Harris Austin's family does not fit the known children of Julia (Haley) and Hugh Austin. Plus, I believe that Julia Haley Austin was a widow by 1840, when a woman Julia's age with five children are living with her mother, Mary (Walker) Haley in Lincoln Co., TN. Also in LCT in 1830 (on a completely different page and perhaps different part of the county than Harris Austin) was a SAMUEL AUSTIN, b. 1770-1780. In his household, in addition to himself and his presumed wife, there were three children ages 5-10, a male, 15-20 and a female, 20-30. Just a page over from this Samuel Austin is Julia Haley Austin's father, CHARLES HALEY, along with her uncle, JEREMIAH WALKER, and brothers, WILLIAM W. HALEY and THOMAS T. HALEY. Make note of the young adults in this household. I will mention them below. As mentioned, by 1840, I believe Julia Haley Austin was a widow and residing with her 5 children with her mother in LCT. Samuel Austin, b. 1770-1780, was enumerated in LCT in 1840 and listed on the same census page with him were Julia Haley Austin's brother, JEREMIAH T. HALEY and another close relation, WILEY WILBANKS. Given the proximity of Samuel Austin to the Haley family in 1830 and 1840, I am hypothesizing that the Hugh Austin who married Julia Haley was either Samuel's son or a close relation. In order to be married ca. 1830, he would likely have been born by about 1810. I believe that Hugh Austin is likely the young man in Samuel Austin's household in 1830 in the "15-20" age catergory while Julia Haley Austin would be on the younger end of the "20-30" age category. Hugh and Julia were likely recently married and do not appear to have any children. Later records support a birthdate ca. 1810 for Julia. Looking back to the 1820 Census, the Gideon Austin of Lincoln County, TN does have a male born bet. 1805-1815 in his household. However, the name Gideon does not seem to come down the line in Hugh and Julia Austin's family. Yet, the name Samuel appears frequently. By 1850, Julia Haley Austin is on record in Pontotoc Co., MS. Her mother in Lincoln Co., TN is believed to be deceased by that date. Julia is the head of her own household, a presumed widow, with children: ARCHIBALD (17), MARTHA (15), MARY (12) & HUGH AUSTIN (10). Listed on the roster of the Camp Ground Church of that county are: (Male members in 1850)--Samuel Aston (Julia's son) and (Female members in 1850)--Julian Aston (Julia, widow of Hugh) and Martha Aston (their daughter, who would have been 15 in 1850). What drew Julia (Haley) Austin to Mississippi? Did she have Austin family relations there? By 1860, Julia was living with her daughter, MARY AUSTIN COOPER, wife of WILLIAM COOPER, in Poinsett Co., AR. This is the county to which Julia's brother, REV. JEREMIAH T. HALEY (farmer and Methodist Minister) had migrated ca. 1856. Accounted for in that county in 1860 were most of Julia and Hugh Austin's children, as follows: --Samuel Austin and wife, MARTHA UNKNOWN (Samuel, oldest son, b. ca. 1831. His age is off in this census). He might have married an Elizabeth Crow or Cross in MS in 1857. Iin 1876, he may have married a Mary Coleman in Poinsett Co., AR --Archibald Austin and MARY JANE BELL Archibald H. Aston married Mary J. Bell 4 Feb 1852 (Pontotoc Co., Mississippi Marriage Book, 1849-1891) (Per other researchers, she died ca. 1912, Coleman Co., TX) --Mary Austin and husband, WILLIAM COOPER. This Cooper family was living two households away from Julia Haley Austin in Pontotoc Co., MS in 1850. --Hugh M. Austin, single, living with his cousin, Mathilda Haley and husband, JOSEPH HAWL (HALL). --Martha Austin's status is not known. I have other Austins, but won't add more data to the mix right now. ANY feedback is appreciated. Thanks, Monica Wilbanks Buzbee
