Leta, I found Alfred Austin in 1900. 1900 MO, St. Louis City, St. Louis City, ED346-5. Born Aug 1861 England, married 20 years, immigrated 1885, naturalization pending, (a little hard to read) chief clerk B & B Dept, RR. So it sounds like he had a job on the railroad that took him away from home. Perhaps you could find death records, if you contact the railroad. The 1880 census records are actually in Walnut, Crawford, KS. It is the 1900 census that is Parsons, Labette, KS.
