Alinda, In the 1850 PA, Tioga, Jackson town census, there is George Austin 31 NY farmer; Mary 29 NY; Abigail 10 NY; Samuel 8 NY; Adam 6 PA; George 4 PA; Jerome 2 PA and a Martha Stevens 17 NY. In 1880, George, Mary and Adam are in MI, Jackson, Springport. Since Tioga County PA is right on the New York state border, many Tioga families came through Chautauqua Co., Cattaraugus Co.,..... Your family line was entered into the Austin Families Assn of America's databases in 1997 from your notes, probably sent to and entered by Bonnie Bigolin, the AFAOA genealogist. It has 93 individuals and can be viewed in "group sheet format" at the Austin Families Assn of America Website, www.afaoa.org/ Click on Austin Research- Unplaced Austins- Northern. Please contact Jan Untener to update your family's data. Liz, I had considerable E-Mail correspondence with Alinda several years ago (1997) about Peter Austin. She sent me a good deal of information, which was also sent to Austin-L@rootsweb. If you do not have it, I can make a hard copy and snail mail them to you. I do not think I can come up with her original E-Mail messages, so can not forward them to you. Note that Peter had a daughter, Abiah. This is an unusual name, so I have speculated that she married John Townsend, and that their daughter, Emerilta (Emma) A. Townsend, married John P. Austin, son of Lorenzo Austin. Lorenzo is a descendant of Robert Austin of Kingston, and is listed in the Moore Book. I have not been able to make any other connection between the two Austin lines. There is a picture of Lorenzo's gravestone, in the Newfield Cemetery, in the Tompkins County Gen Web Site, at http://www.rootsweb.com/~nytompki/cemeteries/tcem132.htm He was in the Union Army. John Townsend's family is listed in the 1850, 1860 and 1865 Census Records for Newfield, Tompkins County, NY. John Austin, Emma, and their son, Thurlow, are listed as living with John Townsend in the 1865 Census, after he (John Austin) was discharged from the Union Army. I have not been able to trace John Townsend's line, or find any other of his descendants. The Census Records state that he was a farmer, and was blind. LDS Digitizing Books, on-line NOW at BYU !!!Oh BOY, here we go!A dream coming true. The Family History Library is starting to digitize their book holdings, mostly family histories to date, and they are putting them on-line, fully searchable by any word or advanced search combinations. Five thousand plus of these books are on the Brigham Young University Library servers and readily accessible, NOW! The LDS Family History Library has announced that it has begun the process of digitizing and making available on the Internet all of the Family History books in their collection. These are primarily books in the "929.273 Series" that are currently housed on the first floor of the Family History Library (previously housed on the fourth floor of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building). At the present time (September 2005), about 5000 books have been digitized and are available, and they have announced that they are adding about 100 titles a week to the on-line collection. Copyright issues are playing a role in determining the order in which they progress through this task; books out of copyright are being done first. Go to the web site of the Harold B. Lee Library at BYU, http://www.lib.byu.edu/ then on the home page, follow the links: Find Other Materials Electronic On Line Collections at BYU Text Collections tabFamily History Archive from the list of collections that are displayed. The search box on the left seems to be the one to find your books at and the search box on the right is for searching within the pages on screen. Carl Hommel
I would caution anyone using these family histories to do so with some skepticism. Most of them are not documented and you will find errors in them. As always, do your own research and compare your findings to what you find in these books.
