    1. John AUSTIN,Franklin Co,AL 1860,reply
    2. Reply by Helen Austin [email protected] I have seen your John Austin b 1820 TN on the 1860 Franklin Co, AL census and have been very curious about him. I am so glad you replied to my query on the Austin List of yesterday. I do not know if he is related to my John C. Austin b 1831 TN, but we do have similar problems. Also it is likely that the parents of both Johns came from SC or VA or NC, so perhaps we can help each other as we search for ancestors ? I have a clue for you about the wife of your John AUSTIN. I also had RODGERS/ROGERS familie who came into Marshall Co, AL (Sand Mountain farming community) and some came to Walker Co, who may or may not be the same families. I did find a source for my Jeremiah RODGERS who was from ANDERSON Co, SC and before that from VA. There is a book published on this family. I will need to reply to you privately about the RODGERS and the reference, since this list is primarily for AUSTIN references. But, look at the Jones O. Rodgers who was in Franklin and then Lawrence Co, AL. Thanks for the message and keep in touch. Maybe some other AUSTIN researchers will respond to our discussion about the FRANKLIN and WINSTON/LAWRENCE Co, AL families of 1850, 1860, through 1900. Helen

    1. Fed Inc.Tax Apr 1866 GA,J.C.Austin
    2. From: Helen Austin [email protected] To: AUSTIN family research I wanted to see what the Excise Tax or Federal Income Tax of 1866 looked like in the Southern States. I looked up a J. C. AUSTIN because I have been searching for records for our John C. AUSTIN of North Alabama and TN for the period between 1860 and 1870. Does anyone know of a liquor salesman of 1866 in AL or GA, named J. C. AUSTIN ? This is from a photocopy of the page on Microfilm for GA, Triekman or Friedman District, Whil. Co. (The script was dim and written over for the d-k letter) April 1866, Alphabetical List of Persons i Division # 5, of Collection District No. 4, of GA, liable to a tax under the Excise laws of the United States, and the amount taxed. W. H. Watson, assessor. line 1, J. C. AUSTIN taxed for the following items, 2 carriages and 41 barrels of whiskey. as you probably know only certain items in personal possession were taxed in 1866. It was really more of a personal property tax or ownership of items that could be sold for income, more than an income tax as we know it today. Carriages, watches, pianos, stallions, quantities of whiskey and occupations such as Hotel keeper, manufacturer, distiller, Rel. Dealer had to pay tax of 21 to 27 U. S. dollars. I did not find a similar roll of microfilm for Alabama at the library.

    3. Austin List Subscribers... Please do not use the Austin List for e-mail which is non-Austin related. We do our best to filter commercial "spam", etc., but Austin List subscribers still occasionally use the list for communicating with others on non-Austin related matters. Each time this occurs, we receive a number of "unsubscribe" requests... people on the Austin List do not want to be bothered reading non-Austin related e-mail. Please note that repeat offenders will be permanently removed from the Austin List. So this e-mail itself will not be totally unrelated to Austins, we are pleased to announce that the Plaza Hotel in Salt Lake City has extended the deadline by a week (to 12 July) for reserving your room for the 1998 National Austin Convention at our special Group rate (see details below)... Please reserve your room ASAP, and please be sure to register with Alice Martin (so we can get an accurate headcount and prepare your Convention nametags), and please include the names and birthyears of your earliest three known generations of your Austin line... this goes on your nametag, to make it easier to spot your "cousins" at the Convention! This year's Convention is being jointly sponsored by the Austin Families Association of America and the Austins of America Genealogical Society. It is shaping up to be one of the best National Austin Conventions ever... we hope you decide to join us in Salt Lake City, meet other Austin genealogists and to visit the LDS Family History Library, a terrific place to dig into your family roots! 2. There is in the census of 1840,1850, georgia, cobb county, a thomas austin listed. I,too, am researching Austins of Georgia. You may want to look at Gwinnett County, this is county Cobb was formed from. Cobb formed in 1832. I am looking for Parents of James J. Austin,B.1822,georgia, and wife Martha B. 1822 Ga. I believe I have found mine. It is just a matter of confirmation which may take a while. Any info back past 1830 is hard to confirm. thanks
