Some have mentioned the author, Aurelia Austin of Atlanta , GA. Does anyone know if she is still living.? Eight years ago, I tried to purchase her AUSTIN FAMILY HISTORY about the Gilder Plantation Austin's of Greenville Co, SC. She said it was out of print and returned my check. I am going to Atlanta to the Natl ARchives next week to research and would like to try to contact her, if she is still living. Does anyone have her latest address and phone ? If I reach her, I will ask if I can put information about her books online to this list. Helen Austin, Decatur, AL [email protected]
I would also be interested in any book by Aurelia Austin. I found "Confederate Boys with Stonewall Jackson", and also a book of her poems "Bright Feathers" . If you fine more, would like to know about them. Thanks Rebecca
From: Helen Austin [email protected] Subject: JOHN HILL AUSTIN, b NC 1823-1878 AL, a fine haberdashery on Bank St. in Old Decatur, AL (1860 cenus and genealogy below) Some time ago I had a query about this Austin and could not lay my hands on my file. Today I found it by accident when I was looking for something else. I do not know if this family was connected to the "Austinville" Austins, whose progenitor, Samuel was also from NC. They did not live nearby and were in different professions. Genealogy from ALABAMA RECORDS Vol 105, by Kathleen Jones and Gandrud, Morgan Co, Marriage book record and notes: John H. Mary Eliza Parker b Triana, Madison Co, AL 1827, d 1905, gdau of Edward W. Parker and Eliza Parker (1802-1847). This Ed.W.Parker left Huntsville, AL to come to Old Decatur, AL in Morgan Co, and was cashier of the Old State Bank (which still remains on Bank St. Decatur). He went bankrupt (as did the bank) and went to TN. <John Hill Austin moved to Decatur. His father was Bennett May AUSTIN 1793-1873. His mother was Margaret CORWIN 1794-1873. Dw 97 is James Segars a watchmaker from PA who employed W.B. Cain a silversmith. This is all I have on this family today. I might have the 1850 census somewhere. Also, John Hill AUSTIN was an active union sympathizer. Records can be found in the History of Morgan Co, by John Knox. Somewhere I read that the house of J.H.A. was used to house the union officers during the occupation of Decatur .A Claim for property damage to the Federal Goverment was filed after the civil war. Other records I have seen are many deeds for Decatur city property in the names of his children, John C. and Charles. On later census, it shows values of property owned by John C. Also, the later census show how John H. prospered and hired european tailors for his clothing store after the civil war. There is a very interesting story in this family for t hose who want to search.
To Bobby County and the AUSTIN and Morgan Co, AL Lists >From Helen Austin, [email protected] In a message dated 7/26/98 9:51:05 PM, you wrote: <<In any of your records do you have a Samuel or Nancy Austin. William and Vandiver both married Hutsons of Morgan County. If fact, a cousin, who had done some research years ago stated that the Austinville Cemetery was from land donated by one of the Austins. I live in Alaska so research is limited on these people. Trying to find Samuel's parents. Thought they might be related to some Austins in Morgan County and that was reason they moved there from NC. Would appreciate any info you might have. Thanks. Bobbie County>> Frm Helen- I know something about the "Austinville" Austins of NC. Enough to know that they are not related to our "Falkville-Mountain Springs" Austins of SC and TN. That is, our John C. AUSTIN was b 1831 TN when your Samuel AUSTIN fam was still in NC. And he was in Morgan Co, AL about 1854, when his sister Nancy married. At that time Samuel was still in NC (because of birth dates of ch in NC). Also, the Samuel AUSTIN family had some money and were prosperous. They made investments as soon as they arrived in Mo Co., had a gristmill and property with an artesian well, which is still sending up water daily from a fountain on Spring Avenue in Austinville. John Austin seemed to have little money of his own and worked at the grist mill of his father-in-law, Isaac Edwards in the area that is now called Falkville, AL. When he was about fifty years old, John went to the next county, Lawrence, to the Forest and had a homestead. Of course, I should not discount the possibility that the SC and NC AUSTIN families were connected back in the 18th century. I just don't know about that. I am still not answering your question about the NC sources for your families. Again, I don't know. I have not searched in earnest for that families roots. However, there are several researchers who are members of the AFAOA and perhaps they will contact you. Here are some namesof your cousins who have researched your family : Sandra Benham, 6790 India Lane, Cummings, GA 30131 and James A. Boutwell, 1116 Sandra St. SW, Decatur, AL, still lives in Austinville, and another local lady who is a member of Mo Co. Gen soc and AFAOA and will probably see this message. Good luck

To all Austin descendants of John Calhoun "Jack" AUSTIN b 1831-d 1907 LC,AL From: Helen Austin, of Decatur, AL, wife of Vernon, last grandson of Jack [email protected] I finally found the document to prove that, just as Arthur Austin, Vernon's dad, said, Granpa Jack's widow, Marg (Margaret J. HENDERSON AUSTIN) lost his 140 acre homestead in Bankhead Forest because of failure to pay taxes. When grandpa died in 1907, his widow was destitute. Their only survival was by hunting, gathering, trading, and planting the small plot on the mountain top, heavily shaded by the towering hardwood trees. Margaret had tuberculosis, but lived on. She removed to Tishomingo Co, MS with her daughter Eunice Austin Nichols and her sons George and Arthur went with her to bring in a crop for the Nichols. In 1920 they returned to Lawrence Co, and share-cropped a place on Morris Chapel-Caddo Road. Arthur married in June of that year and went to the coal mines in Jefferson County. George went to Texas to work for Eunice and Dave Nichols in Corsicana. George took Margaret there and she was cared for by Eunice and children until she died in Corsicana, TX. The Sheriff Sold the land and here were the people who paid the taxes until it became part of the National Forest in 1912. I found the first plat book of Lawrence Co, AL in the basement of the LC Archives last week. The map of Township 8S, Range 8 W, Section 22, shows clearly who paid the taxes on the property. for NE 1/4 of NW 1/4 & NW 1/4 of NE 1/4,J. C. Austin 1902-1905 C.C. Glenn 1905-1906 Mrs. Mattie Masterson 1907-1910 Jno. Elsworth 1906-1910 R. H. Wolcot 1911 and SW & SE 1/4 of NE 1/4 J. C. Austin from 4-29-1899 to 1902-1905 C.W.? 1906 C.C. Glen 1905 Jno. Elsworth 1907-1910 80 ac. R. H. Wolcot 80 ac. 1911 The plat book also shows that some of Margaret brothers had land on the other side of Flannigan Creek, John Allen Henderson (Jr.) paid tax from 1902-1911 on Sec 22, Twp 8, R8W, SW 1/4 of SW1/4, land that was previously J.C. Parker His mother, Rhoda E. (Richards) HENDERSON had all west of the Creek in Sec 21, Twp 8, R 8 W. and paid from 1902-1911. This land was previously owned by Tabitha Castleberry Henderson from 1896-1900. I will next get the deeds copied for the land. But isn't it wonderful that the homeplace is now in the National Forest and we can all enjoy seeing the beautiful place. At least, if the forestry people don't clearcut the property. We could have a family reunion next Nov. at the MacDougal Hunter's camp. If you wish we can take a hike back into the woods for the 3 mile off-road trek to the foundations of the cabin like we did two years ago. If you have further questions send email to Helen. Their son (4) Dennis was born 30 Dec 1825 in Switzerland Co., Inc. and died 19 Feb 1915 in Miltonvale, Kansas. He married Harriet Gary. Their daughter Ester Woods Austin married my grandfather Samuel A Maxwell. Any information you may have will be appreciated. R. A. Maxwell
WOW! What an email. I couldn't tell who said what, but I was copied and will comply gladly. Just glad there's some interest in this Austin branch. I know that I was taking the Austin newsletter back in the 1980's, then I gave up and dropped out of the Austin Assoc. because of various reasons. It was there that I knew of Dr. Michael Austin. I still have my newsletters...long before the beautiful Internet with instant-action kind of genealogical research/sharing. (That's another subject worth debate.) It was in those days that I learned about John Austin and Charity Kendrick. Don't think I've learned anything new about the Austins since! Guess that's why I sent my email to spark some talk about this line. I would like some information about Lunenburg Co., VA Austins. I know for sure that James Austin, supposedly the son of John and Charity (Kendrick) Austin, was in the Harpers Ferry, West Virginia area. No doubt the Austins were in Virginia prior. But Austin is a very popular name and I have no proof. Help is certainly appreciated. Clues extremely welcome. Francine Conn Halter
I have Matilda (Austin) Bassett, according to her daughter Melinda's death notice. Melinda was born Jan. 4 1870 in Danbury, NH. If you get any more information on the NH Austin family, please let me know. Debi...

My ancestor is John C AUSTIN. He married Mary Ann GURLEY in Coweta County on January 13, 1829. He was born around 1810 in SC. He is found in the 1840 and 1850 census's (sp?) in Paulding county GA. I have been trying to find information on his father for 2 years now without success. Family history suggests that his name was John also. It seems that a lad of 19 or younger would have had his father around close by but that is just a guess. Would really appreciate any information you might come across about this man and his forebears. Thanks in advance Steve Austin [email protected]

Dear TOM, I am very interested in your AUSTIN families. I am still looking for some of the family from Laurens Co, besides Alexander AUSTIN the Rev War Soldier, who left SC and came to Lawrence and Morgan Co, AL. I have never known if Alexander was any relation to my John C. Austin b 1831. I have much information on what happened to Alexander after he came to Lawrence Co, AL and had a saddlry and farm and was prosperous. His son was a school teacher in one of the first schools on General Joe Wheeler's plantation. This part of the plantation originally belonged to Alexander. I have his Rev WAr pension application. A brother John, and perhaps a James is mentioned in some of the papers of Alexander. Does anyone know about them ? Alexander named his son James (the teacher). Alexander's other, known, child was a daughter who was mentally handicapped and had to have someone to take care of her, all her life. My John's parents must have been born in the upcountry of SC about1800, I am not positive if it is Laurens, Greenville, Fairfield, or Spartanburg. They stopped in TN in 1831 when John Calhoun Austin was born. John was living in Morgan Co, AL, operating a grist mill for his in-laws, Isaac EDWARDS and George LOTT, Jr. by 1854. But, I can't find him on the 1850 census in AL, TN or other ?
Daniel Austin born in Greene County in 1842 was the son of Absalom Austin. Daniel was a private in the Civil War joining Missouri Company I, 8th regiment. He served from 1862-1865. He was discharged in Arkansas. I do not know if he served the Confederate or Union. Could someone tell me where I may be able to look this information up?
From: Helen Austin [email protected] Concerning the Thomas M. J.
