I have lost my website for the Austin Family Assn. My computer crashed recently and I want to rebuild my favorite places. Could someone post it for me. The one I had in my paperfile is evidently no longer viable. Thanks so much Victoria A. Pickrell
SEarching for information on Bryant Austin, Sr. b. abt. 1755 perhaps in Ireland and died aft. 1832 in NC.Bryant married an Osborne. Can anyone confirm his country of birth and his ancestry? His father's name may have been John from what I understand. I descend from his daughter, Sarah (1783-1853), who married John Griffin in NC.
To Brenda, et al >From Helen Austin [email protected] RE: New information on Hugh J. Austin b 1827 AL and the William Austin b 1793 TN and family. Nothing like looking in file folders, for a change! :-)) I found three documents of interest to you: 1. Newspaper Item: Moulton Advertiser, 6 Sep 1855, as printed in FOOTPRINTS IN TIME, Vol 1, extracted by Myra Border; dateline from Lawrence Co, AL William D. AUSTIN of Ft. Bend Co, TX died after a short illness of typhoid fever. he died at his father's house in the company of his mother, brother and sisters, leaving his little orphan son , now in Texas to the care of his brother. Item 2- 1st book in Lawrence Co, AL REVERSE INDEX TO DEEDS- grantee, William Austin - Grantor, Thomas Phelps - Orphans Court Book C: p 342 (Note this is the only William Austin of this county at that early time, that I know of. ) Item 3 - Probate Minute Book I-18; dated Dec 9, 1874; AUSTIN W. T. Simmons is named executor of the estate of George W. AUSTIN. Also for estate of SARAH A. AUSTIN, also for MARY BLALOCK, JOHN L. AUSTIN, PARROTT AUSTIN, THOS. J. AUSTIN. entered into bond for each of said estate in the sum of $800 with Henry Thone and E. C. Ashford as his securites. (note from Helen, I think this W. T. Simmons was a lawyer) notice that these names also appear in the Power of Attorney dated 1876 which I sent you yesterday. I wonder why all these folk died about the same time. Perhaps it was one of the Yellow Fever epidemics. According to the census of 1850 and 1860 which we examined yesterday, the AUSTIN, Wm. and BLALOCK families lived near the TN River in the lower cotton growing estates. more later as I find it.
To: Brenda Robertson searching for Hugh J. Austin of Lawrence Co, AL From: Helen Austin, [email protected] of Decatur, AL I think I have found some information for you in Lawrence Co, AL records concerning the Hugh J. Austin b abt 1827 and William and Mary of the 1850 LC Census. I had the William Austin on my computer with the 1850 census. However, I did not have Hugh J. with him. Perhaps I missed that ? Do you have the complete census citation ? I would like to see it. This is what I have on my footnotes for William: The legal record I copied, not knowing who it was for. But it is about your Hugh. !CENSUS: 1850 U. S. CENSUS, Morgan Co, AL; Div 110; 16 Dec 1850; Dist 234; Dwelling 3, Fam 14; William Austin 68, M, Farmer, $2000 RE, b SC; Elizabeth 55, F, SC; George 21, M, farmer, AL; Mary A. 21, f, AL; living near Henry Norwood and Lucy; and Wm Burleson and Manerva !QUERY: email from Brenda Robertson ([email protected]) Lawrence Co, AL Austins, 1850 census; Hugh J. Austin b 1827 al living with William and Mary ? !DEED: Lawrence Co, AL; Deed Book R; p 94; 11 Apr 1876 Power of Attorney; photocopy in poss of Helen Austin Sep 1998; We, William Thomas Blalock and Sarah Jane Davis of Lawrence Co, AL appoint John Ada(y) our lawful attorney to receive and receipt for us for all that is coming to us from our grandfather's estate our uncle's Hugh J. Austin's estate, our Ant Parret's and our mother's estate giving and granting unto our said attorney full power and authority to do acts necessary and proper to be done in setting up the above mentioned estates. 7 Sep 1874; Sarah J. Davis and W. T. Blalock signed; Wm. F. Crowley Test.; signed by probate judge J. H. McDonald on 3 May 1876. Note by Helen Austin, this John Aday may be an attorney from Huntsville, AL, who is related to the John Aday, a farmer of LC. ======================= The BLALOCK interested me, because I remembered a Mary AUSTIN (family not known) married a BLALOCK. I think it is this family from the 1860 LC census. Notice that they have a son William T. Blalock b 1851 AL and living with them a Thomas J. AUSTIN b 1818 AL who is working as Baliff for the county jail. !CENSUS: 1860 Lawrence Co, AL; No. Div (Courtland); Page 999; Dwelling 58; Family 58; Blalock, John C. 38, M, NC, Farmer $1500/$1000; Mary J. NOTICE that the Sarah J. b 1856 may be the Sarah Jane Davis of the power of attorney dated 1876, when she would be age 20-21. There is one other BLALOCK family on p 896, So. Div of Lc; Selling 110; Thomas Blalock 36, AL and Mary J. with ch. Joseph J. 7; Esperan 6; Bell 4; Catherine 2; Robert H. 5/12; Jones, Theophilus 29; Jones, Thomas M. 5; Jones Sarah 72 NC. ======================= This suggests to me that their maternal grandfather (Mary's dad) could be a AUSTIN, perhaps the William and that their uncle Hugh J. was Mary's brother. If you want the copy of the legal record send me privately your address and I will copy the 1860 census pages for you also.
For folks who wish to give copies of heirloom photographs to historical societies, here are two quick & easy methods: 1. Hummels Office Supply in Herkimer has a photocoping machine which makes color copies. Folks use it to copy fliers, office presentations or (in my case) photographs -- black & white or color. An 8 x 10 copy (or enlargement) only cost $1. (The copy is made on regular paper) When the copy is put inside a picture frame, one can't tell the difference unless one is inches from the picture. I guess most office supply stores have this type of copier these days. 2. The Super K-Mart in Kingston, NY, & I guess most photography shops, has a computer scanner. This machine can copy a photograph (same size or enlarge upto 8 x 10) onto actual photography paper. This cost about $8 for an 8 x 10 copy. The main draw for this option is this type of copy takes a better picture than the copy made on everyday paper. As a result; on has the original photo- graph, the $8 photopaper copy, the 35 mm photograph of a photograph, & most importantly a negative of an heirloom picture. (I imagine scanners for home computers can do the same job as a scanner at a photography shop.) As for unlabeled pictures, I have some of those too. A kind person from one of the lists referred me to a person who should be able to help me with one of my lines. Should this prove fruitful, I plan to use method #1 to copy the photos & ask if this person might be able to identify any of them. (This person & I share a line, if not a common ancestor, & he might have labeled photographs of the same people.) It's definately a long shot, but it's one worth taking. I have William Henry Harrison Austin b. 1840 in Albemarle County, Virginia, m. Christena E. S. Wood in1864 also in Albemarle. William's parents were Samuel and Mildred Austin. In a will of Hezekiah Wood, filed in Albemarle County in 1852, it names a daughter, Harriet Austin, and grandson, Samuel Austin. Christena Wood's parents were David Wood and Sarah A. Webb, all of Albemarle. David's brother James also married into the Austin family, marrying Rebecca Marshall, a daughter of Eleanor Austin and William Marshall. It also appears that David's son, Christopher C. Wood married Lizzie Austin, the sister of WHH Austin. Do you have any information on these families...particularly Samuel Austin? They appear to be related to the Calvert County Maryland Austin's, Marshalls, and Wood's but I'm having trouble getting it all sorted out! Thanks for all your help, everyone!
AUSTIN QUERY FOR COLBERT and LAWRENCE CO, AL >From Helen Austin, [email protected] John Harvey AUSTIN b 29 Apr 1876 Falkville, Morgan, AL mar 1899 Mt. Springs, Lawrence Co, AL; removed to Old Brick Presbyterian Church area, west of the Town Creek about 1917 after it had become part of COLBERT co. AL. Many of his family are bur at that church and John H., d 11 Sep 1957 in Colbert at his farm. His brother, Isaac Samuel AUSTIN b Jul 1867 Morgan Co, AL, d 1 Jul 1947 AL, and was bur 1947 Shiloah, Franklin Co, AL. He lived for a time at Leighton, Colbert Co, AL, not far from his brother. There were many AUSTIN, ASTON, ASTIN settlers in the Brick community from before 1820. Does anyone know if the Matthew A. ASTON b 1847 and wife, Clara O'NEAL, who are bur in Old Brick Cem, are connected to the John C. AUSTIN b 1831 TN d 1907 Lawrence, AL who was the father of the John Harvey and Sam mentioned above ? I do know that Matthew was the son of Alexander L. AUSTIN who was probably a son of either, John, James, or William of the 1820 census of Lawrence Co, AL. These early Austins were related to the Alexander Ginges AUSTIN of Lawrence Co, AL and formerly of Spartanburg, SC who was a Rev War Vet. His only son reported in his pension record and will, was James , a schoolteacher. This researcher believes that the other James and John, and perhaps the elder William on the early census were younger brothers of Alexander. I list below the data from the 1830 and 1850 census for Lawrence Co. The Aston (spelling) families including Alexander L. and Matthew A. were in that section of Lawrence that became part of Colbert County in 1895. Hi, I am seeking the parents of Harvey Austin, who was born on 4Nov1818, in Montgomery County, Ohio and died on 18Jul1888 in Sidney, Ohio. He married Sarah Jane Dobbins on 5Dec1846 in Shelby County, Ohio. Dennis Neu Dayton, Ohio
Been following the list for a while and have not seen any mention of Austins in the West. My husband is descended from a William Thomas Austin who lived in Clyde, Texas. He was married to Maude Rice from Illinois and they had several children: William Thomas, Junior( my husband's father ); Mary Virginia Austin, Florence Austin Haas and Harold Austin. The family folklore suggests that William Thomas came from Georgia and I remember some years ago that my father-in-law attended an Austin reunion in Georgia somewhere. He mentioned a cousin Henry who lived in Monroe,Georgia but I have not been able to locate Henry. Any one who knows of a connection I would appreciate a line. Thanks.
