    1. [AUSTIN] Thomas J. Austin b 13 Oct 1843
    2. Helen
    3. To Liz and Austin researchers >From Helen Austin Please place this individual on your unplaced Southern Austins list. THOMAS J. AUSTIN BORN 13 OCT 1843 state unknown ===================================================== this is from a listing in a family bible of the family of John C. Austin 1831-1907,who is already on the Austin database for Southern Austins at AFAOA site and AustinsGenealogical Society John C. did name his first son by Elizabeth Edwards, Thomas J. L. Austin. This Thomas was born 1859 in Morgan Co, AL. No one in the family seems to know who this older Austin is?? It is possible that he was a brother or cousin to John C. , but we just do not know. I have tried the usual search methods, but have not found any clues. The younger Thomas, born 1859 appears on the 1860 census with his parents. However he does not appear in any other census or records, nor does his mother. According to family legend, Thomas and his mother, left with John's wagon one stormy night! by 1870, after the Civil War, John has married a second time in 1867, to Mary Easter Edwards, the younger sister of Elizabeth. In 1861, Mary Easter Austin, a daughter of John C. Austin was born in TN, location unknown. She was in the household with her father and (step?) Mother, Mary. No war record, either in Union troops or CSA has been proven for John C. Austin, although there are several possibilities in both, AL and TN records.

    1. [AUSTIN] Updated Austin databases
    2. Liz Carlin
    3. Austin Families Assn of America would like to alert you to several recent updates and additions to Austin family research. Several of the updates, including a major addition to "John Austin of Stamford, CT" were triggered by data contributed to the Austin-Austen DNA Project, http://www.austins.org/cgi-bin/DNA.asp . "John Austin of Stamford, CT" was recently updated, and 2 families found in Northern Unplaced Austins - William Austin=Hannah Hoag/ Mary of St. Clair Co., MI and Jason Lee Austin and Eunice/Rosanna of Michigan. "John" can be found on the Austin Families Assn of America Website www.afaoa.org . You can see it in Family Group Sheet style by going to Research - Northern databases - CT John. Or to see it "book" style go to the Text Document Search - Descendancy Books. When searching on a name in Text, there is one minor annoyance, since the Search will only find "exact" matches. When the person is born, or is a parent, no problem. But when the person is the "head" person, there is a Generation Number between the first and last name, and the Search will not locate the person. To find the "Head" and his/her family, search on the parent's name. Since by definition "Unplaced Austins" have no "head of the family", you will only find the information in Family Group sheet format. Research- Northern Unplaced. However, you can do a Text Document Search on places, names,...in our AFAOA Archives, and find some of the supporting documents for these changes. 1. [AUSTIN] The Lost Colony DNA Project & Symposium
    2. >From the Administrator of the Project: Is your family part of the Roanoke Lost Colony? It could be! My name is Roberta Estes and I’m the Director for DNA Research for the Lost Colony Center for Science and Research. (_www.lost-colony.com_ (http://www.lost-colony.com/) ) Our goal is to discover the fate of the Roanoke Lost Colonists. For those of you who don’t know about the mystery of the Lost Colony, here’s a primer. In 1587, Sir Walter Raleigh financed a venture in which 116 men, women and children were planning to establish the first permanent colony in the New World. Their goal was to raise tobacco and other supplies that colonists were unable to obtain in England, and to search for precious minerals, like gold. In the fall of 1587, the colonists finally arrived on Roanoke Island in present day North Carolina, after a very difficult journey in which their food supplies were ruined. They sent John White, whom they had elected governor, back to England to obtain food and supplies and expected his return in the spring of 1588. However, the Spanish attached England and England, having no Navy, impressed all of her fishing vessels and private merchant ships into Naval service. Finally, in 1590, three years after leaving the colonists which included his daughter, son-in-law and infant granddaughter, he returned to Roanoke Island to find it deserted, but not destroyed. It appeared as if the colonists had simply moved. A single word, a clue, Croatan, was carved on a tree. The Croatan were the friendly Indians living nearby. Before John’s departure, he had instructed the colonists to carve crosses if they had to leave in distress. There were no crosses. John White would spend the rest of his life searching for the Lost Colonists. Many hints and clues indicate that at least some of the Colonists survived and were assimilated into the native tribes. The question is, did they, and if so, who are they today? In 1993, the original site of the Croatan village was located. Subsequent archaeological and genealogical research suggests that the colonists did survive, and that when the land was granted to settlers, it was granted to some of those survivors who were by that time considered to be Indians. With recent advances in DNA for genealogy, we finally have, today, the ability to solve the mystery. We have created a plan that combines history, genealogy and DNA to solve the mystery. However, we can’t do this alone. We need the help of the families who have been identified as “families of interest”, being either roster members of the Lost Colony of those who obtained land grants on the original Croatan village site. Many of those names are the same. In order to educate people and work closely with people who are interested, we are sponsoring the Lost Colony Symposium for DNA and Recent Research Sept. 7-9, 2007 at the Lost Colony Center in Williamston, NC. The symposium will be held between the Center and the Holiday Inn, as noted on the flyer at _http://www.lost-colony.com/DNAsymflyer.html_ (http://www.lost-colony.com/DNAsymflyer.html) . Given that your surname is one of those on our “Names of Interest” list, I hope that people on the list will join with us in our research. I am hoping from this mailing, aside from encouraging people to attend the Symposium, to achieve the following: 1. To identify a primary research person or persons for your particular surname who would serve as a contact/coordinator for future postings, requests and research. 2. To identify a family archival website(s) if one exists. 3. To identify if there are any families of that surname that are from NC (or early coastal SC or VA), have oral histories of Indian or "mixed" heritage, are involved with any of the tri-racial isolate groups (Melungeons, Red Bones, etc.) and/or have any oral history of the Lost Colonies. 4. To determine if the family group is involved already with DNA testing, and if so, who coordinates that effort. 5. To determine if there is any research occurring or that has occurred for your surname in Great Britain, and if not, if anyone is interested in pursuing that avenue. To become involved with the Lost Colony project, or to support the project, please attend our Symposium. Our project plan will be announced at the Symposium, and we have a long list of wonderfully educational speakers. Bring your pedigree charts and your genealogy as the right people will be present to help you with your testing plan. If you can’t attend the conference, you can still join the project. Information will be posted shortly about how to do that on the Lost Colony website. We are in the process of setting us a private newsgroup for project members only which will also be available after the symposium. Furthermore a blog is being created and blog location info will be posted on the Lost Colony website as well. If you are interested in this project or can be of help in any way, please contact me at _restes@comcast.net_ (mailto:restes@comcast.net) . ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    1. [AUSTIN] War memories
    2. V.A. Austin
    3. Hello Austin cousins, What follows was written for another listserve, in response to a request to send war time reminiscences. I thought you Austin's might enjoy it, as it is our line. I suspect some of my Austin ancestors fought (or at least paid someone to fight!) those dratted British - have a wonderful INDEPENDENCE day. ----------------- My story is less heroic than funny. My grandfather was on MacArthur's staff and set up the environmental laws in post-war Japan. Apparently they are some of the laws that have survived most intact to the present day. While their father was involved in the reconstruction of Japan, my father and uncle spent years there as children. At one point they were commandeered to be in a play group with Akihito, the current emporer, so he could learn American 'things' and gain familiarity with some American children. They also remember their strong dislike of Arthur MacArthur, the general's son, who was chauffered about everywhere. Some time after arriving in Japan (errrr....it may have been Guam - I can't remember!) an American school was organized and one morning the two boys were picked up by a bus. My father sat in the front seat. A few stops later an arrogant boy got on and demanded that my father move, pulling rank by announcing, "My father's a Colonel!" My father retorted, "Well my father is an ORNITHOLOGIST!" The belligerant young fellow was not sure what that meant, and rather than betray his ignorance retreated ignimoniously to the back of the bus. My father continued his front seat ride for the rest of the school year. For anyone interested, my grandfather was Dr. Oliver L. Austin Jr. Happy July 4th! Valerie Austin

    2. Liz Carlin
    3. Austin Families Association of America is pleased to announce that at www.afaoa.org in Northern Austin databases, we have a new 747 individual database, "NY Thomas and Esther Austin". The New York Thomas and Esther Austin extended family has had an extensive presence on Long Island (Suffolk County - Huntington, Amityville, ...); Westchester County (Yonkers, West Farms, Morrisania); and in many Hudson River communities. In 1874, West Farms and Morrisania became part of New York City. Over the last few years, there have been many queries from descendants of this line, many frustrated by not finding their ancestors in the John Austin of Stamford, Connecticut line, whose descendants, in many cases, have lived side-by-side with Thomas and Esther's family in many of these same Hudson River communities. Also in Northern Austins, we have updates to " Richard Austin of Charlestown, MA, 1638". In Southern Austins, there is an update to the "NC William and Ruth Austin" line. Several new lines have been added to the Northern Unplaced Austins. The descendants of William Austin, a CT seaman, who migrated to Huron/Erie County, Ohio as a first settler, and New Jersey born brothers Cornelius and Jonah Austin who migrated through Lyons, Wayne Co., NY to Oakland and Van Buren counties, Michigan. If you are unsure of your Austin ancestors, come visit our Master Index. It indexes not only our Northern and Southern Austins, but also our Northern and Southern Unplaced Austins. The book should be out in late March or early April. John Payne ____________________________________________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? 3. I don't know who you talked to about Josiah Talmadge and Abilgail Austin, but our Austin Families Association of America records show that Abigail and her brother Charles are children of Benjamin Austin, who died in Schaghticoke, Renssalaer, NY, son of Thomas Austin and Abigail Wiltsie, son of Thomas Austin and Esther ( of NY, Long Island ) This database is currently being developed ( almost ready ) for the AFAOA Website. I hope you find the connection you are looking for, but if you can contribute anything to the database which will be published soon at http://www.afaoa.org/ , please contact me. 3. The mentioned Richard Austin, born 1775 ..... is part of the " John Austin of Southside Virginia" database on the Austin Families Assn of America Website at www.afaoa.org/ You can see it in Family Group Sheet style by going to Research - Southern databases - VA John Sr. Southside. ( For this search, I just put in "Elike" by itself. Then click on Chapter 1-5 ) Richard is not descended from the mentioned John. He is a brother of John. The database begins with the unknown common ancestor.
