    3. Leah, To find a naturalization record or a passenger list remember & try the following: 1. timeframe your people entered the U.S. a. people who were in U.S. by 1789 were grandfathered as U.S. citizens b. persons who arrived after 1789 or after a territory was annexed by U.S. had to complete a five year residency before naturalization could be completed: did they move around during that time, where did they settle c. most naturalizations prior to 1906 took place in local & state courts as they were closer & more convenient d. naturalizations after 1906: - still had five year residency requirement - went to closest city with federal court 2. National Archives Records Administration (NARA): - note while regional offices only have federal court naturalization records, in some cases they may direct you to the proper local court to contact for pre-1906 records a. 3. My middle name is AUSTIN and I am called after my uncle, Richard Austin Cooper, and I do not know where that came from. I'd like to find out!! Possibly a Mary Austin who married James Cooper born abt 1776 at Elvington, Yorkshire. It is likely to be an Austin who married a Cooper or a Coates in Yorkshire in the early 19th Century or who may have lived in Stokesley, Yorkshire.

    3. I am researching descendents of Thomas AUSTIN, born abt 1790 in England. He immigrated to America with his wife and seven children. His wife and one child reportedly died at sea. Children of THOMAS AUSTIN and are: 1-THOMAS AUSTIN, (II), b. December 09, 1824, England; d. July 04, 1899, Watervliet, Berrien, Michigan. 2-WILLIAM AUSTIN, b. Abt. 1825, England; d. August 07, 1874, Ogden, Weber, Utah. 3-PHILIP AUSTIN, b. Abt. 1830, England. 4-GEORGE AUSTIN, b. Abt. 1832, England 5-(FIRST NAME UNKNOWN) AUSTIN, b. Unknown, England; d. Unknown, At sea (Atlantic Ocean) 6-GRACE AUSTIN, b. Unknown, England; d. Unknown. 7-JAMES AUSTIN, b. Unknown, England; d. Unknown. I have located Thomas Austin and this family in Ohio,US in 1843. I don't know when they arrived in the states, where they were from in England, or the port of entry. The last child above that I have a birth date for is George in England, 1832. So they must have come to the states between 1832 and 1843. If I could locate a family in an England census (1820/30)with the same names & ages I would probably have the family I'm looking for. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could locate this family in England between 1820-1830? I would appreciate any help. Thanks, Gary R. Austin Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA
