I received a response from Earl Peeler regarding my Bartholomew Austin, but when I replied I got a message that [email protected] was not a known user. Earl, please see what's wrong with your server and write again. I have lots of info to share on Bartholomew and his descendants. Carolyn Cooper
Carolyn, This seems to be my ancestor, Bartholomew Austin. > #2 Bartholomew Austin: Born in Grayson County, VA abt. 1779 and died before > 1861 in Cumberland Gap, VA (W.VA?). Son of William Austin. This Bartholomew > had 11 children. The info I have from Ruth M. Austin of Danville, VA says that Bartholomew was born about 1768, probably in Surry Co., NC. He married about 1790, Anna Reeves d/o George Reeves and Jane Burton. They had 13 children: William b 1792; Isaiah, b. 1793; Jane, b. 1795; Jesse, b. 1791; Andrew, b. 1799; Lucinda, b. 1802; David, b. 1804; John, b. 1806; George, b. ca. 1808; Robert, b. ca. 1811; Prudence, b. ca 1813; Jackson, b. ca. 1815; and Edwin, b. 1817. Bartholomew died around 1841 at Cumberland Gap, KY. Would love to hear from any others who are related to this line. Thanks, Pam Kerschner Pawleys Island, SC

My earliest Austin ancestor of record was Bartholomew, born about 1715, maybe in VA. In my research, I've come across the following Bartholomews and would love to find out if anyone connects to them and/or has any information on them or their descendants. #1 Bartholomew Black Austin: Hung for treason in the Plant Cutters Rebellion of 1862 in Gloucester, VA, along with Summersett Davies/Davis and Richard Cockin. (BTW, if anyone's interested in learning what the Plant Cutters Rebellion was all about, I can fill you in.) #2 Bartholomew Austin: Born in Grayson County, VA abt. 1779 and died before 1861 in Cumberland Gap, VA (W.VA?). Son of William Austin. This Bartholomew had 11 children. #3 My Bartholomew Austin, b. abt. 1715; m. Elizabeth ???, d. 1771 in Craven Co., SC. Father of John, Edy, Bartholomew, William, Drury, Davis, Mary, James, Joseph and daughter who m. a Busby (grandson Bartholomew Austin Busby named in will of Elizabeth Austin) #4 Bartholomew Austin, Jr., son of the above b. abt. 1740-1750 or so, d. before 1803 per his mother's will - have not been able to track down any descendants. #5 Bartholomew Austin, son of William and Elizabeth of Craven Co. SC. William d. 1777 in Craven Co., SC and is thought by some to be the father of Bartholomew #3, but I believe he is actually the son of Bartholomew #3. Have been unable to locate any descendants. #6 Bartholomew Austin, possibly son of William ( who was the son of Stephen) who migrated from Montgomery Co., VA to Wayne Co., TN. William deeded land to Bartholomew Austin in Ashe Co., NC in 1826. Would love input on these various Bartholomews. Odd, isn't it that so many of these men had fathers named William. Have any of you out there heard or seen anything on a Hiram AUSTIN (maybe Raymond Hiram or Hiram Raymond). I have no birth or death date; however, he married a Laura E. MORSE (could be MOSS, as one of their children's middle name was Moss - Lester Moss AUSTIN). Lester was born in Lyndon, Whiteside County, Illinois, 14 Feb 1867. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Michael Gallegos [email protected] post script: My wife' grandmother was an AUSTIN, who married a HOUSTON.
Hi, William Henry Harrison Austin was the son of Samuel and Mildred Austin, b. June 6, 1840. We know he married Christena S. E. Wood in Feb. 1864, all in Albemarle Co. VA. We know he had a sister "Lizzy" M. Austin who married Christena's brother Christopher in 1867, and that Liz was born about 1845. They all went to MO together in 1888 or so. I got my copies of the Miscellaneous Papers Index of Albemarle County. (God bless Mr. Maupin, the bored clerk who did this in his spare time!) Samuel Austin died in 1880 and left a will! In it he only names the two children...WHH and Elizabeth M. There is also a will for Richard Austin, died 1828. His wife's name was Mary (Snow). His children included Samuel, Eli, John, Elizabeth, Nancy, and another girl I can't think of off the top of my head. Perhaps Mildred died early...maybe in childbirth with Lizzy or a third child...in 1850 census of Albemarle, there is a Samuel who is living with another family, the Prichetts, and he is a carpenter age 40, born in VA. Eli is listed as married (we know her name was Harriet Wood...hmmm, another Wood...) and the children are listed as HARRISON age 10, William, age 8, and Harriet age 4. Could this be our William Henry Harrison...going by Harrison since they already had a kid named William????? (Harriet Austin's will names Eli, and one son, Richard....) If so, where's Lizzie? Little Harriet is the right age...but definitely not the same name....Could she be living with one of the Aunts...who married and I don't know what there married names are? Also, the 1850 census is very limited on Austins...there was H. O. Austin, a physician, age 23...a son of Richard's brother Obediah, (who did not have any kids named Samuel), F. L. Austin, another son of Obediah, and Eli (who I mentioned before). That's it...all one big happy family! Any ideas on if I might be right or wrong? I have contacted the Austin Families of America Association before and again now, but haven't heard back from them as yet on this family. Really appreciate all your help. Kathy Oathout Mattoon, IL

To All descendants of John Calhoun AUSTIN (Grandpa Jack) >From Helen and Vernon Austin ([email protected]) of Decatur, AL 256-350-2787 We have decided to have another of our Biannual Hikes to the old cabin homesite of Grandpa Jack in the Bankhead Forest, South of Moulton, AL, Lawrence Co. On Next Sunday Afternoon. No dinner or picnic is planned. Bring your own water or snacks as you will. Meet at 1:30 to 1:00 PM at the McDougle Hunters Campground on Cheatham Road, Highway 33, South of Moulton, AL. This is in the Black Warrior Mountains. There are primitive camping conditions, no tables, but a toilet. Plenty of parking. Rough hiking. Not for the faint of heart, or babes. The forestry trail to the AUSTIN HOMEPLACE is just west of this site, across the road. We will lead a group of hikers about 3 to 5 miles back into the woods to the place where the fireplace and foundation stones remain to mark the cabin site. No, we have not done anything about getting a marker made for the homeplace or the footstone for the grave at Mountain Springs Church. If you can't make this, Willard Austin told us that some are planning an evening service for Decoration Day on the third Sunday of May 1999 at Mountain Springs Church. But, news is that we did get the bio sketch of John C. Austin 1831-1907 into the HERITAGE BOOK OF LAWRENCE CO., AL which was published by LCHS and Heritage books October 1998 with a picture and the bio sketches and pictures of three of his sons, Isaac Samuel, Luther, John Harvey are going into the COLBERT CO HERITAGE BOOK next year. All are welcome, next Sunday, Helen

Going through the 1850 census for Illinois, found the family of Elike and Matilda Austin. There are six children with the family. Mary, Margaret and Abraham James are the only names that are readable. Is anyone familiar with this family? I have a querie from a James Meeks but it is nearly two years old. Thanks for any help on this one. Don Challis
