    3. >Was this Bartholomew Austin line in NC prior to SC? had a brother Nathaniel >or Benjamin? TXJEAN ([email protected]) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear TXJEAN, Bartholomew Austin is the last person on my lineage, born about 1715, location unknown and died 1771 in SC. He married an Elizabeth and had 10 children that I know of (I can send you their children if you don't have them). There are only theories about his parentage and I don't know any of his siblings. If you have any information that might lead to more on Batholomew Austin, we would like to learn of it. Have you sent your question to the AUSTIN List? If you are not a subscriber, you can subscribe to the AUSTIN list Digest by typing "subscribe" (without the quotes) in the message portion of an email to: [email protected] To send a query to the AUSTIN list, send it to: [email protected] Someone on the Austin list might have some answers. I'd like to hear them too. Sincerely, Cynthia SIMS Kirkland -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Researching these Genealogy lines: Sims (line 1)..... 1. AUSTIN in STATES and COUNTIES
    2. Cynthia Kirkland
    3. This message is being shared with a smile :), and is just a simple friendly reminder from one researcher to many others. When we are discussing COUNTIES in our messages and queries, it would be helpful if we all remember to include the NAME or INITIAL of the STATE that it is located in. This may sound very basic and simple, but I've noticed that many people seem to forget to include the STATE in which they are referring to in their messages. I have noticed, time after time (and not infrequently), that people take great care to compose detailed, and sometimes lengthy messages, about their ancestor research, including counties, but never once mentioning the state in the entire message. My own excitement and frustration peaks when I read of a similar family name in the correct county, only to find out, after wasted emails that it is the wrong state. Since I have seen this so often, I have decided to share this as a reminder to all. It would make it so much easier for all of us, if we could just remember this: Please keep in mind, that the Internet and these lists are accessed and contributed to by people from all over the US and world. There are 50 STATES in the these United States. Many of these states have counties of the SAME NAME. This may actually come as a surprise to some searchers. Examples (just to name a few): Reference: Handbook for Genealogists by Everton and every US Atlas. 8 STATES have/had a Butler Co.: Alabama, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. 18 STATES have/had a Clark or Clarke Co.: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, 19 STATES have/had a Clay Co.: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, 6 STATES have/had a Dallas Co.: Alabama, Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, Texas, Wisconsin, 10 STATES have/had a Pike Co.: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. 12 STATES have/had a Polk Co.: Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Wisconsin. .....and so son, and so on. There are hundreds of county names that appear in more than one state. Please help yourself, and all of us, by remembering to include the STATE to which you are referring. This will make many genealogists lives so much easier. With a smile and a thank you for listening to my 2 cents. Happy Hunting! :) Cynthia SIMS Kirkland (This is not a flame, nor do I intend it to turn into a big discussion. I don't mean to open a can of worms or to offend to anyone. The above occurrences that I speak of are simply a matter of fact that can be resolved with a little forethought and common since.) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Researching these Genealogy lines: Sims (line 1)..... 3. Hello, Austins, I found this information that intrigued me, and thought I'd see if anyone recognized the subjects. SCOTT CO., VA ---------------------------------------------------------- http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/ u1/data/va+index+124028759184+F File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by:Jenny Stilwell [email protected] Stony Creek Baptist Church Minute Books 1801 - 1811 1811 - 1814 Fort Blackmore Scott County Virginia This copy of what is perhaps the first book of the Stony Creek Primitive Baptist Church, located on Stony creek, near Fort Blackmore, Scott County, Virginia, was in the possession of Mr. Scott Beatright of Colburn, Virginia, whose grandfather was once a Minister of this church. The book is written on paper and bound between covers made of home spun cloth. The handwriting is very good and the ink has lasted well.Copied August, 1966, by Emory L. Hamilton, Wise, Virginia, with a copy filed in the Archives of the Southwest Virginia Historical Society, at Clinch Valley College, Wise, Virginia and a copy sent to the Virginia State Library, Richmond, Virginia. ...June the 24, 1809 The church met together and found in love... Then came forward Pressleigh Nuston (AUSTON) and joined the church by letter... April the 24, 1813... (The next page in the book is upside down and contains what appears to be a roster of members, with small square cut off the bottom right hand corner, which contained about nine names.) ...Priscilla AUSTON... [NOTE: Items in parentheses are by the original transcriber.] I find this family of interest, as the name of the male would appear to have been PRESSLEY AUSTIN. This was a reported son of David Jones AUSTIN of Hardin Co., TN, Itawamba Co., MS, and Le Flore Co., OK & TX? The name of the son of David Jones Austin has also been reported as Clifford Pressley Austin, but I have never found any documents that show this child as related to my David. If anyone "owns" this Austin, I would love to hear! Pam [email protected]

    1. DAVID AUSTIN OF SURRY CO., NC & BENJAMIN AUSTIN OF HARDIN CO., TN
    2. Pam Stone
    3. David AUSTIN of Surry Co., NC, I seriously am considering as the likely ancestor of my David Jones AUSTIN, b. 1841, MO, and would appreciate clues from other researchers of this line. David AUSTIN was recorded in Wilkes Co., NC, in 1790, and patented land in Surry [recorded in Wilkes] on Butler Creek on the south fork of the Mitchell River. Steven [sic] AUSTIN also made a land entry for acreage on Christian's Creek, though William AUSTIN actually ended up with the land. [I have abstracts of these entries if others in this line want them.] I have been told the following things on this David and his children: David AUSTIN Sr. d. 1823 in Surry Co., NC, or Boone Co., MO, and final settlement of his estate was in 1826. His wife was Elizabeth [UNKNOWN], and his children were Benjamin, John, Robert, Peter, Mary BRADLEY of Christian Co., KY, and Elizabeth BRADLEY of Boone Co., MO. [This is supposed to be from Janet Austin Curtis.] Benjamin AUSTIN is said to have m. Sarah HARRIS, dau. of David's next-door-neighbor, Dabney HARRIS. Does anyone have a marriage record? Two of the reported sons of David, Robert AUSTIN & Peter AUSTIN I have found on the 1817 Tax List of Howard Co., MO [from which Boone was formed.] Benjamin AUSTIN reportedly was on the 1830 Boone Co., MO census. Anyone have record of that? In the 1820's and 1830's in Boone Co., I find record of the following marriages: Benjamin AUSTIN [Jr.?] m. Elizabeth AUSTIN 1826 Hannah AUSTIN m. James SHARP 1827 Joel AUSTIN m. Sally AUSTIN 1827 Dabney AUSTIN m. Jane FREEMAN 1836 William W. AUSTIN m. Jane GORDON 1839 I have been told that John AUSTIN, son of David Sr. m. in Madison Co., KY. Anyone have a record of that? Wm. W. AUSTIN is said to be on the 1850 Carroll Co., MO census with his family. Was he a grandson of David? Or Peter, Robert and John AUSTIN all patented land in Boone Co., and I have records of that that I will share if anyone needs them. There was a Benjamin AUSTIN said to have died 1848 in Boone Co., and he may be the grandson of David [or unrelated], I don't know. Anyone have a record of that Benjamin's will? What I do know for certain is that Benjamin & Sarah G. AUSTIN were on the Hardin Co., TN 1850 census; he was 63, she was 58, and they were both born in NC. Benjamin appears on the same page with a Samuel AUSTIN; they are both blacksmiths. Was that a son of Benjamin Sr.? Anyone have this Benjamin Sr.'s will? Sarah AUSTIN was still alive in 1870 when my David Jones AUSTIN first appears on the census with his wife and family. I have not located Benjamin and Sarah in MO in any documents, and if anyone has records of them between about 1800 and 1850, I would appreciate your sharing. Does anyone have any knowledge of any of these names in this line? I have heard speculation that David was the son of John AUSTIN, Jr. Is that the John AUSTIN that d. 1760 in Lunenburg Co., but whose will describes his property as being in Halifax? The record I show of that John AUSTIN names his wife, Hannah, and children John, Vallentine, Stephen, Joseph and Richard. Richard AUSTIN that d. 1759 Lunenburg named sons Thomas and Euzriah [Uriah?], and Elizabeth VERNON, Sarah JOICE, Samuel DAVID, Thomas JOHN, Perin ALDAY, and David REESE. One of the witnesses to Richard's will was Nathan AUSTIN. [I have copies of these records if anyone needs them. In short, I have no will, deed, Bible record, etc. of ANY AUSTIN that shows a son David. Does anyone? Is it just me, or are there a lot of AUSTINs in records recorded as ASTON, ASTIN, ALSTON, and other variations that make them hard to pin down? :-) Forgive my ignorance on the established AUSTIN lines--- I have been lost in MS & TN for a LONG time! Thanks for your help, and hope I connect with someone! Pam [email protected]

    2. Greetings: I have the newspaper clippings (2) of my grandfathers obit. Which I found tucked away in an old family Bible. They are very fragile and yellowed, there are no headings or date of the paper or clipping, I have searched both sides of the clipping and can not tell. I will type it out for you, it reads: # 1 -Trammel, Va., April 14. - Teamon Bowman, Dickenson County pioneer, and probably the oldest man in Southwest Virginia, died at his home at DeBusk postoffice, on Lick Creek, five miles north of here, at 9 A.M. Thursday, April 8th. Born near Alum Wells, Washington County, in 1822, he was ninety-three years of age at the time of his death. His father, Uriah Bowman, came from North Carolina in the early years of the neneteeth century and settled near Alum Wells, where he readed his family; of this family only one now survives, Mrs. Tryphena Agnor, of Hilton Station. #2 - Trammel Viginia. Mrs Emm Austin, Mrs. Francis Miller, Mrs. Jane Silcox, Mrs. Ellen Silcox and Mr. Charles Bowman were called to DeBusk, on account of the serious illness, and subsequent death of their aged fater, Dr. Teamon Bowman. Dr. Bowman, who was undoubtedly, Dickenson County's oldest citizen, was ninety-three years of age, and settled on the farm where he died, some forty-five years ago. Granville White, Foy McMillian, Jessee McMillaan, O. T. Austin and many others from Trammel attended the burial of Dr. Teamon Bowman, on Bear Ridge, Saturday. (typo errors left in as written) I have FTM 5.0, and have had absolutely no luck with the Bowman line. One family member thinks Teamon's wife was named Mary ?. My grandmother Emmaline Bowman was born April 21, 1881 in Washington Co., Va. d. 11-30-1964. She married Nathan Ballard Austin 12-08-1898 at Nora, Dickenson, Co., Va. Nathan Ballard Austin was born 2-07-1880 in Russel Co., Va. His father was Elijah Austin b. about 1835 in Floyd. Co., Va. d. between 1910-1926 in Buchanan Co., Va. or Dickenson Co., Va. I have had much better luck with the Austin line. If anyone has any suggestions, or if we can share info., please let me know. Kathryn Austin e-mail: [email protected]

LEONHART born 3/2/1867 at Taylorsville, Oh. now is Philo, Oh. Parmelia married Hiram King HAWXHURST 10/12/1886 at Zanesville, Oh. They had 6 children. Parmelia second married John L. BEHMER 5/29/1929. 2. Mary L. LEONHART born 8/22/1869 in Muskingum County, Oh. Mary married ? Deitrich date & location unknown. I think Martha & Frederick also had a son named Leroy LEONHART but I haven't been able to get any information about him. I have the marriage bond for Martha & Frederick & it states Martha was more than 18 years of age so she did not need a consent signer for the marriage bond. I have been on the Muskingum County, Oh. Rootsweb list & posted requests concerning Martha with no results so far. Also unable to locate Martha & Frederick in any cemeteries in Muskingum County. I have the application for naturalization document for Frederick proving that he came from Saxony Germany. I would like to hear from anyone who might have data or suggestions regarding my search. This is my first post on the AUSTIN list. Thanks in advance for your help, Ed Jones New Palestine, In.
