    1. 1850 census Greenville,SC
    2. Looking for info on the families listed on the 1850 census in Greenville,SC. There are 10 families listed that have Austin family members. Three of the families are headed by females. Some of these people are descendants of Nathaniel Austin and his wives. There is a Nelson Austin, TC Austin, Wm and Wm jr and Wm LM. Can anyone identify these people? I have four pages of descendants for Nathaniel and Mary Manning and it seems reasonable that some of these others are also family members because of the location and unusual names like Anderson and Manning used as first names. Any help with this will be much appreciated. I would be happy to share the descendancy with anyone interested. Thanks Don Challis

    1. Lawrence,Winston,Morgan Co,AL for Nichols, Austin, Sims, Hill
    2. To Cynthia >From Helen Austin of Decatur, AL I am sending you this message in response to your queries on the Austin-L. There are several names of interest to me. First, I have been looking for a possible link in Fairfield Co, SC (or Laurens, Spartanburg, or Greenville Co, SC) for my John Calhoun AUSTIN b 1831 TN. Both his parents were born SC ca 1790-1810. I have looked at the Fairfield and Greenville and Laurens Co. Austin families for 1790-1830 for possible parents of our John. I have had no luck in locating proofs of parentage for John. John was in Morgan Co, AL by 1854 as was a possible sister Nancy Austin who married William Lott, a son of George Lott of Fairfield Co, SC. John married two grand-daughters of this George Lott. They were Elizabeth EDWARDS SWANN and Mary Easter EDWARDS. After John moved to the adjoining counties of Winston and Lawrence to the present-day Bankhead NAtional Forest, he married a widow, Margaret HENDERSON SIMMONS in 1894. First names of the sons of John AUSTIN were: Thomas J. L. b 1859 disappeared before 1870); Johnnie (d as infant); Isaac Samuel (named for Isaac Edwards, gfather); John Harvey; Luther Demarcus; George Reason; Arthur Ambrose(Ambers) b 1897. Names of daughters of John C. AUSTIN were: Mary Easter (named for mother/aunt); Eunice b 1894 m David Edmund NICHOLS. Neighbors of John in the North Alabama area which link eventually to the Austin families are: desc of Wm. Nichols, Rev War Vet; Sims, Hill, (in Pinhook Valley of Lawrence Co, AL) It is the surnames you mention and many neighbors from SC that make me want to ask if you have any families in these three counties of North Alabama? She came out to her car and saw she had a flat. She got her jack and spare out of the trunk. A man in a business suit came up and started to help her. When the tire had been replaced, he asked for a ride to his car on the opposite side of the Mall. Feeling uncomfortable about doing this, she asked why he was on this side of the Mall if his car was on the other. He claimed he had been talking to friends. Still uncomfortable, she told him that she had just remembered something she had forgotten to pick up at the mall. She left him and went back inside the mall. She reported the incident to the mall security and they went out to her car. The man was nowhere in sight. Opening her trunk, she discovered a briefcase the man had set inside her trunk while helping her with the tire. Inside were rope and a butcher knife! When she took the tire to be fixed, the mechanic informed her that there was nothing wrong with her tire, that it was flat because the air had been let out of it! Please be safe and not sorry. Although this happened in Columbus, it could happen anywhere. Just a warning to always be alert. Pass this along to every woman you have access to. Never let your guard down. 1. Bartholomew Austin
    2. As have many others, I have been working on Bartholomew's line attempting to link our 1715 Bartholomew Austin to the Bartholomew Austin who was executed in Virginia in the 1680's in the Tobbacco Cutters Rebellion. That is when I discovered that there are other Austin lines with Bartholomews as well. I propose some coordination of efforts. It seems with the internet we have the perfect tool to prevent duplication of valuable search time and to share information. Anyone who is interested in joining a search group to assist and share information on Bartholomew Austin please email me. If we could look and see in what direction we each are going and, for some novices like me, get some ideas from the more experienced as to specific sources for us to do the leg work and check out we may be able to make better use of our time and prevent duplication of efforts. Some may be better at different types of research and investigation, while others may be located in areas that have resources not widely available. Let me know what you descendants of Bartholomew think. Bob Austin

    3. Charles, thanks. Yes, I have her lineage. She is a daughter of Almon A. Austin and Sarah A. Haley. He is son of Agrippa Austin in the the lineage of Robert Austin of Kingstown, R I of 1661. Laura first married William Martin Pottorff in 1881 in Harrison Co., Mo, and they had the 2 sons, Almon and Owen. William Martin Pottorff died in 1887. She then married William Henry Pottorff and that union gave her six more children. William Martin and William Henry were first cousins. During this period of time 1865 to 1900, these families were in Harrison Co.,Mo and/or Ringgold Co., IA, right across the border. The two sons of the first marriage just seemed to disappear in these two counties of origin. We'd like to trace them down and add them to our data base. I found them mentioned in the will of Garrett Martin Pottorff in 1916. Garret Martin Pottorff is the father of William Martin Pottorff who died in 1887. Confused yet? Thanks. Charles
