I don't know that I am a part of THE Austin line from Canada, but am part of AN Austin line now in Canada (originally Delburne, Alberta) for 6 generations. Although I wish official confirmation was stronger, it seems apparent our line goes back to Robert Austin of Rhode Island. If our personal family information is correct, James Austin and Ruth Fish had several children in addition to those given by Edith Austin Moore. Among them was James Jr. (1808 - 1888) who married 1. Miss Pratt in 1832; 2. Anna Macy in Dec. 2, 1846 and 3. Mary Templeton, Oct. 17, 1868. Our particular line comes from Preserved Fish Austin, son of James Jr. and Miss Pratt. Am particularly interested in confirmation of James Jr. as a son of James Austin and Ruth Fish. Jerry Austin

We meet again. Saw you message regarding the William Austins of Maryland and thought I would muddy the waters. I have been working on those Austin families for about 30 years and still dont have all the answers. Maybe others will see this message and give some help. Basically, I am interested in the Austins of the Eastern Shore who migrated to NC and I am including some of what I have. I am almost 100% sure the following alignment is valid and the vitals are well documented so I will throw it into the Austin arena and see what happens. Can anyone in genealogy ever be 100% sure? Anyway here goes. 1. SAMUEL AUSTIN, b. ca. 1677, Ann Arundel Co., MD [??], m. by 1691 to ALICE [Surname unknown] 1. MARGARET AUSTIN, b. Eastern Shore, 11Oct 1691 2. HANNAH AUSTIN, b. Eastern Shore 11 Apr 1694 3. JOHN AUSTIN, b. Eastern Shore, 21 Oct 1695, m. 7 Aug 1722 ROSAMOND SMITH (widow of WILLIAM SMITH). After John died she married 3rd to PHILIP CRISFIELD and they had one son, ABSOLOM CRISFIELD. 1. WILLIAM AUSTIN, b. Eastern Shore, chr. 17 Aug 1723, d. 1810 Burke Co., NC. Married 1st ELIZABETH GREEN, ca 1743.. (William and Elizabeths children get a little bit sticky. According to an old document there were two Austin boys who were Loyalists and went o Canada as UELs. I am including a transcription of this old document as part of this message. I believe the lady who wrote it was one generation off in her statement of who were the Loyalists and who went to Canada. The above William would have been 53 years old in 1776. Besides the Revolutionary War vouchers indicate he was in NC all during the War. NOTE CAREFULLY: THE FOLLOWING CHILDREN OF WILLIAM AND ELIZABETH ARE NOT PROVEN. THIS ALIGNMENT IS SPECULATION AND IS AN INCENTIVE FOR FURTHER RESEARCH ONLY. 1. JOHN SAMUEL AUSTIN whose wife was Elizabeth and who went to New Brunswick 1n 1783. 2. WILLIAM AUSTIN, b. Eastern Shore ca. 1750. The Colonial Records of North Carolina discuss a William Austin who rode with a Loyalist guerrilla group under the command of Colonel John Pyles in and around Orange Co. I cannot prove this but I have a gut feeling this was the son of William and Elizabeth Green Austin. Apparently he laid low because of his Loyalist activities and he did not reappear in NC until 1787 when he purchased land in Orange County and married RUTH KELLY. Elizabeth Green Austin apparently died before 1759 and William married 2nd to ANN JONES ca. 1759and they had the following family. I am 100% confident on this alignment 3. BENJAMIN AUSTIN, b. Eastern Shore, 21 Jan 1760, married MARY BRADBURNE 4. ELIZABETH AUSTIN, b. Eastern Shore, ca. 1762, married JOHN WHITE 5. SAMUEL AUSTIN, b. Eastern Shore, ca. 1763, married ANN CONNORS 6 NATHAN AUSTIN, b. Delaware 1767, married REBECCA TEAGUE 7. NANCY AUSTIN, b. Orange Co., NC ca, 1773, married NINEVAH BARNES 8. ELIJAH AUSTIN, b. Orange Co., NC 15 Feb 1774, married 1st MARY TEAGUE, Married 2nd TEMPERANCE PAYNE 9. ARRAMENTHA AUSTIN, b. Orange Co., NC ca. 1775, never married 10. ELISHA AUSTIN, b. Orange Co., NC ca 1776, married MARTHA FOX DOCUMENTATION The document from which the following has been extracted was provided by Sally Austin Day, a professional genealogist who is descended from the William Austin/Ruth Kelly family. The original document has been handed down through her family. The name of the author is unknown but it is attributed to a great-granddaughter of William and Ruth Austin. The original document was handwritten on foolscap and for genealogical purposes is considered as authentic as a Bible record or similar historic paper. For citation purposes it is identified as FAMHIST.141. The document is old and some of the writing is hard to interpret. Questionable words and passages are enclosed in brackets. I am trying to make the connection between Andrew Jackson ( my gggrandfather) and John A Auston of Alabama. They are about the same age both b. around 1810. They were in Barbour CO during the same time frame ( John pruchased land and A. J was married) then both families eventually migrated to Geneva CO., AL. John A also named a son Andrew Jackson. COuld they be brothers? Andrew Jackson was also a memeber of the 3rd batn. reserves CSA and said that his reseidence was Washington CO., GA. ( shich actually wasn't, but he could have lived there before moving to Barbour CO.) IS anyone researching Austons of that area? Sharon: I am replying to you individually and doing a Copy to the group as well: The William Austin I wrote about died June 22, 1697. As I said he had a son William. That William, the son, died about June 15, 1735. The reason I am sure that they are father and son is that the name of the plantation was the same in both wills. The son Willaim listed as heirs his sons William, John and Jacob. On May 29, 1734 a William Austin and Martha Austin witnessed the will of a James Earle in Maryland. In Earle's will there is a mention of a granddaughter, Martha. This all came from the same Calendar of Maryland Wills Book mentioned before. Bob Austin
Carolyn: >From what I have been able to find, Amelia County was formed in 1734 and was once part of Prince George and Brunswick Counties. Hanover County was formed in 1721 from New Kent. All three counties may have been part of an earlier county. maybe someone else is more familiar with all of that. I really need a good source for Virginia county information. I ran across some more information that I did not put on rootsweb yet (I guess I didn't want people to think I "talk" to much) about a John Austin from that same area. John may have been related to Barth. John was allowed in 1725 an allowance from of St. Peter's Parish of New Kent County for the upkeep of a Mary Amos, a widow. From the same Vestry Book of St. Peter's Parish, John had at least four children: Agathy Austin d/o/b March 3, 1719/20; Mary Austin d/o/b November 4, 1723; Jane Austin d/o/b April 12, 1726 and William Austin d/o/b July 7, 1728. I guess with Agathy's birth date John could have been born from 1690-1700? Could be a brother to Barth? Who knows. There is also a John Austin granted a land patent in Hanover County on March 15, 1734/35. There is also a John Austin married to a (yep, you guessed it) Elizabeth Austin who was the father of Fanny Austin born January 22, 1755. If you want sources on all the above let me know. I don't know if or how they fit together. I still feel if everyone will start looking and we can share information we might get the lesser known Austin's of Virginia straightened out. Bob Austin
Dear Sir: I am trying to locate information on an ancestor:AnneYoung of Amelia County. In 1935 the following article appeared in the Amelia Gazette: AMELIA NEGRO SLAVE DIES AT 110 YEARS Deatonville. August 11. With the funeral services conducted here Sunday, for Anne Young, colored, who died Saturday morning at the ripe old age of 110 years, the last rites were paid to the oldest known resident of Amelia County. "Aunt Anne'" as she was familiarly known among a wide circle of both white and colored friends who love and respect her, was born and reared in Amelia County, and her life was projected over four generation. She was born in 1825 a slave and remained one until 36 years old. This is all that I have of the newsclipping. I would like to know more. Can the books you site be of any help? I understand she owned property some of which was given away: "In the year 1874 on this 4th day of November in the year 1874 between Monroe Young and Ann his wife of the one part and Louis Bolden Jon Randal Henr and Smith trustee of "Gravel Hill" Church in Amelia County of the second part Witnelseth that for an in consideration of the sum twenty dollar in hand paid by the said parties of the second part unto the said Monroe Young. Witness our hands and seal this day year above written. I would like to know more about her. My father was named Claude Monroe Young. My mother was an Austin. Thus, I have come to this page. I hope to locate more...if possible. Any advice regarding the direction I must look would be appreciated. PMurray, Educator
Also have some information on a William Austin. Thought it might be Barth's father but his will was probated in Kent County, Maryland. Date of William's would be around June 22, 1697. His wife was Elizabeth (what other name would you have expected). 1/2 of the plantation went to his son William when he became 21, Eliazabeth got residue for her life, then balance went to William. Another son was John and there were also some "daus"?, I took to mean some unnamed daughters. This came from Maryland Calendar of WIlls, Vol III, p. 94, Compiled and edited by Jane Baldwin, published for Clearfield Inc. by Genealogical Publishing Inc., Baltimore Md. There is also another William Austin in Amelia County Virginia who sold some property to a Richard Echols on March 18, 1742. The Court document noted that William was from Hanover County, Virginia and that the deed could not be official until William's wife Catharine, released her dower. This is from Deed Book 1, Amelia County Virginia, also by Mid-South Publishing (see Barth. Austin post). Just thought someone might be interested. Bob Austin
Just thought I would pass along some information I found yesterday. May be old news to some: Bartholomew Austin was evidently frequently in legal difficulty in Amelia County Virginia. On February 15, 1739 it is noted in Court records that Barth's stock marks were a crop and hole in his right ear and a "flower de luce" in his left. On May 18, 1744 he was ordered placed in the stocks along with a Joseph Hurt, for 1/4 of an hour for "ill behavior." These two notes came from Court Orders of Amelia County, Virginia, Book 1, Mid-South Publishing Co. Amelia, Virginia. Between 1742 and 1745 there are numerous lawsuits and court summons against Barth for bad debts. In November of 1745, Barth must have misbehaved in one of his court trials because he is ordered imprisoned until 3:00 P.M. the next day for such misbehavior in court. This came from an abstract of the Court Orders of Amelia Countyfrom 1735-1746, abstracted and compiled by Gibson Jefferson McConnaughey, Copyright 1985, also Mid-South Publishing.
Hi all, Can anyone identify the Austins on the 1850 Census in Muskingum cnty Ohio? There is several single people living with other families and three Austin Families. There is a Thomas abt 1799 of MD and wife Ann abt 1807 of VA with sons George W and Alfred B ages 4 & 3 that is of particular interest. Let me know if you have any info on any of these families. Thanks Don Challis
Stephen Fuller Austin was descended from Richard Austin. His ancestry does not include a Francis according to the Richard Austin database available on line at http://www.rahul.net/afaoa/genweb/Richard_Austin/Richard_Austin.html <http://www.rahul.net/afaoa/genweb/Richard_Austin/Richard_Austin.html> There are however a number of Francis's shown, none with a birthdate 1674. However, a Francis Austin is mentioned in The History of Guilford Connecticut - Its First Settlement in 1639 by Hon. Ralph D. Smith. This is where I started my 'dig' for information about my husband's Austin ancestor, John Austin, first of CT and then of VT. I have been searching for John Austin's parents with no proven success. However, one of the people I looked at was a Francis Austin mentioned in the above. This man who was in Guilford in the 1650s and was supposedly a founder was apparently lost at sea-"who embarked in the Lamberton ship and was lost..." The footnote says: "Francis Austin is supposed to be the ancestor of the Austins who resided formerly in the north part of North Guilford, from whom descended Stephen Austin formerly of that village, who figured so conspicuously in the history of Texas and after whom the city of Austin was named." This information does not jive with other Stephen/Moses family histories and I have tried to find out exactly where the difference occurred with no success. And, I still do not know who JOHN AUSTIN' parents were. ==== AUSTIN Mailing List ==== Did you know you can search 1996-1997-1998 Austin List Archives via the Web at URL: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl <http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl> Try it! Hello AUSTIN researchers, I have found some more data regarding my gr grandmother Martha AUSTIN since my last posting. She is listed on the Muskingum County, Oh. 1860 census as living in Zanesville. She is listed with the family of Henry MACK or HACK as being a servant in their household. Her age is given as 22 so she would have been born about 1838. I also have the marriage record for her which gives her marriage date to Frederick LEONHART 2/27/1867 in Zanesville, Oh. Martha is also listed in the Zanesville city directory in 1883 as being a widow. I'm seeking any data for Martha, especially who her parents were. Frederick Leonhart came from Saxony Germany & became a U.S. at Zanesville 4/1/1872. I suspect he died about 1880 as he is listed in the Zanesville city directory 1878 as a wollen goods merchant. Thanks in advance for any help in my search. Ed Jones New Palestine, In.
