    3. Kim, When I moved to Eastern Kentucky, I didn't think I had any relatives in the area. While continuing my AUSTIN research, I happened on a line of local AUSTINs in the Pound Gap area of VA and over into Pike County, KY, where I live. I contacted a member of this line, and it turned out they are descended from Bartholomew AUSTIN, who Janet Austin Curtis connected tentatively to my ancestor, John AUSTIN, Jr., as a grandson, son of William. My line is from Stephen, another son of John, Jr. A 90+ relative and her son in Clintwood, VA, have written a book on this part of the family. I don't have her name at the moment, but I will continue to ferret through my papers. At one point, she sent me a flyer about the book, and I had a great conversation with her by phone. There is also a book on the Pound that goes into a good deal of detail on the line. Also, there are AUSTIN family cemeteries in the region. I have some information on these families, but I am sure you would do better contacting them directly. I could possibly answer a question or two, though, from what I have, if that would help. I will keep looking. John W. Scott

    1. BENJAMIN ELLEDGE AUSTIN b. 1792 Wilkes Co. NC
    2. Pam Stone
    3. Hi, Austins, Spotted a Martha AUSTIN who was charged in Wilkes Co., NC with having a bastard child, and posted bond 26 Apr 1792; securities were Benjamin ELLEDGE and William MCGILL. On 30 July 1799 in Wilkes Co., orphan child Benjamin Elledge AUSTIN aged 7 yrs. 14 Apr 1799 was bound to Isaac LOWE to learn the occupation of farmer until age 21. Sounds to me like Martha AUSTIN and Benjamin ELLEDGE were the parents of this little Benjamin...Anybody know about this Ben ELLEDGE? Anyone have any idea whose child Martha was? Yet another Benjamin AUSTIN from NC. No wonder we are all having such a time sorting out those who show that state as their birthplace! [Too young to be Benjamin who was on the 1850 Hardin Co., TN census, and too old to be the Benjamin who lived in Greene Co., MO.] Anyone claim this one? If anyone needs the full reference, I will be happy to share it with them. Have a good one! Pam [email protected]

    3. Hello out there, cousins! I just got my machine up & running, mail & all [still some things wrong, Win95 is a gigantic web, and it only takes one driver missing to ruin your day, as I'm sure all of you know...] At the moment, I do not have my files on my computer [major crash---painful story, was down a month getting my files downloaded to disk one at a time from the DOS command prompt.] I have opened a fraction only, and, with the tangling web of over 80 families that I link to {about 90 surname lines so far}, I have a hard time remembering who was where except for a few lines.] I have over 120 disks worth of documentation that is not loaded at this point (but I DID lose my four biggest files---Bryan, you know what that means!) I hope none of you had mail sent to me that bounced, and I lost over 1,000 E-Mails & all my addresses and favorites that I had in Outlook and Explorer, so it wasn't a total disaster, but came close enough for me! [BACK UP THOSE FILES OFTEN and don't forget to save your correspondent's E-Mail addresses and your favorite address in a format you can read and in a format small enough to load to ONE disk!] If anyone has DOS zipping and unzipping applications, I would surely appreciate a copy as an attachment to an E-Mail or on a floppy. [I could have saved everything if mine had worked, but it was damaged.] That's it, I guess, except Cami, let me know when we are scheduled to come to Germany, and write me a Note, lil' sis! Pam [email protected] FINALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLY online again!

    1. Jane Goodwin Austin
    2. Dear Austin Families, the sister of my great-great-grandmother Elizabeth Goodwin Gräter was Jane Goodwin Austin. She was the author of many historical novels as "Standish of Standish", "The unknown Nobleman" etc.etc. She lived for some years in Concord Mass in a writers colony with Hawthorne, Luisa Allcot etc. As our family came in ca 1842 from USA to Germany contacts have been broken by time. I try to re-establish contacts to "unknown" relatives in Massachusetts. I have already found John A. Goodwin, grandson of the brother of Jane Goodwin Austin - the Lowell politican and speaker of the Mass parliament in ca 1861. My question: Is there any descendant left of Jane G. Austin ? Is there any place where her letters etc has been stored ? These letters, if there are any, could provide us with some knowledge of our Gräter Family. with best regards Rudlieb Gräter Langenfelde 66 24159 Kiel Germany

    1. George AUSTIN, born 1859, LINN Co. MO
    2. M. Wilson
    3. George AUSTIN was born in 1859 in Linn County, Missouri. His parents were Michael AUSTIN, who died c. January 1866 and Mary Dover, who died in c. 1860. He was baptized at age 6 (in 1866) in Linn County. He may have died prior to 1868, the year his step-mother, Martha Elizabeth MCKAMIE AUSTIN, died. Or, may have been raised by a KELLY family in Kansas City, MO after his step-mother died. So far the leads I've followed have not panned out. If anyone has a George AUSTIN in their records who may be this fellow, let me know. Thanks, Margery Wilson

    1. Bartholomew Austin
    2. Carolyn: As promised, here is some information on our old Bartholomew ( I think?): On January 23rd, 1676/77 Bartholomew Austin was given 1000 for the keeping of Jonathon Rumball, a minor, by Petsworth Parish Gloucester County Virginia Vestry according to their Book 1677-1793, Transcribed, Annotated and Indexed by C.G. Chamberlayne, Petsworth Parish Gloucester County Virginia Vestry Boo 1677-1793, (The Library Board, Richmond 1933), p. 1,5,8. Also, Bartholomew Austin was involved in a lawuit brought by guardian of Conquest Wyatt in Glouchester County concerning Lease with the Cheskyake Indians. From Adventures of Purse and Person p. 722 Pub. Order of First Families of Virgina 1987, Citing Minutes of Council and General Courts of Virginia 2d ed. (Richmond 1979). This last reference ties Bartholomew to Gloucester County, where Barhtolomew was hanged after the Tobbacco Rebellion in the 1680's.

    3. Stacy, If you haven't already done so, spend some time poking around the records at the Bureau of Land Management site http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/ This site allows one to search the land patents for many states (more to be added, hooray!) If you find a match you can even look at the original document on line. I did a quick search using your names in Grundy county -- there are matches. I have a feeling you will find some useful data. Also, when you find a name that seems to match your kin, go back and do a genealogical search using the land description (for instance, 31-61N-23W) and you'll sometimes find out who all the folks were who owned neighboring parcels of land. This is often very useful. Best of luck, Margery researching Michael Austin family of Linn Co, MO, 1857 - 1866
