    3. Shelly, I can fill in a little bit of information on this family. The Portrait and Biographical Record of Waukesha County, Wisconsin, Excelsior Publishing Co., Chicago, 1894, p 805 (on-line) says that Gustavus Ogden Austin was born in Massena, St. Lawrence Co, NY (1850 census reveals parents are John Austin 1804 VT and Sabra Plumly 1805 NY - his parents and siblings are in the Northern Unplaced Austins database at www.afaoa.org . He's not there because his name was garbled on the census). Same source: married Lydia O. Covell Nov 1874, Eau Claire, WI. One daughter Florence, born in Waukesha. He was a printer, published a number of newspapers, and was a prominent member of the community. The Prairie Home Cemetery in Waukesha County, WI has the birth and death dates for the above, as well as Florence's husband Clarence W. Vincent. Florence Vincent died 12 Feb 1971 and Clarence W. Vincent died 18 Jul 1965. Obituaries for either one would mention any children, or possibly the death certificate would indicate a family member. If not, I'm sure the local Historical/Genealogical Society would be interested in your photograph. 1. [AUSTIN] Norman R. Austin of NY, MS, IN, TX, CA, TX
    2. Helen
    3. Do any of you know this family? I think they are very interesting.  They certainly moved around a lot.  I was thinking that if you are searching for them you might have a hard time finding them on the census.  I did.  So, I thought I would pass this info along to you. While transcribing the 1860 census for TX last night, I had another family whose members had only initials for the names.  The family interested me because they were born in many different state, NY, OH, MS, Indiana, TX.  That did help when I did a search for them on other census.  I looked at the AFAOA index and found the Norman R. Austin of NY son of Aaron Austin and Mary Kellog of Onandaga, NY. The 1860 census ref for Fannin, TX made by JanetCurtis was a match. However I saw some differences and I thought you might want to make note of it, in case you were looking for Norman in Michigan and not in Mississippi.  I do not think he would have died in Michigan, but the family did move around frequently. Here is some info that I found: 1850 census, Rankin Co. MS, page 226, Dw 294, fam 254. N. Austin. Has wife Eliza, born in Ohio, ch: Frederick, Franklin, Martin, all born in MS 1860 census Bell co, TX, Belton, p 296, 1 Jun; Dw 6, Fam 5;  N. Austin 48, m, merchant, $5,500., pp $21,000. NY owns 6 slaves. wife E.A. OH; F. H. 15 MS; F. K.13 MS; M. L. 11 MS; G. N. 9 IN; C. H. 7 TX; H.A. 5 TX; W. T. 9/12 TX.  All sons.  You might find some info on USGENWEB for Bell Co, TX about the Dry Goods Store or other store belonging to an Austin. If I had not looked at the AFAOA site with the full names, I probably would not have found Norman in 1870.  He moved to California to learn how to raise sheep!  Then he returned to Belton Co, TX by 1880.  The grown sons were all raising sheep except for one, who carried on the tradition of working as a clerk in a store. 1870 Census, Santa Barbara, CA, Twp 2, 24 Aug p 471; Dw 431, Fam 431. Norman Austin 58, m, w, sheepraiser; $3,500.00. pp $4,550.00. b NY. Eliza A. 47, f, w, keeping house, b OH. Fredrick H. 25, m, w, dry goods clerk, $600.00. $250.00. b MS; Frank K. 24, m, w, stockraiser, $250.00 pp, b MS; Luther 21, m, w, stockraiser, $275.00 pp, b MS; John, 19, m, w, at home, b IND.'  *(should this be Greg Norman?) Charles 16, m, w,at home,  b TX; Hugh 14, m, w, at home, b TX; Willie 11, m, w, at home, b TX 1880 census, Bell Co, TX, Belton, Dist. 1, p 255, 1 Jun, Dw 10, fam 10. N. Austin 68, Ann age 56; Chas. 3. At our AFAOA convention in Nashville, Liz told us about the new info on FamilySearch.org I am so excited about the wonderful records online that are as recent as the 1970;s in some Southern States.  I wanted to post some of the details about those records. Once you find that site, I am sure that you researchers will be please to find copies of the actual documents, such as death certificates.  The search engine is also wonderful as one can search using the parents names, and conversely, the children's names to find the parents. I pasted here the info. Millions of death records from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida were the most recent additions. Viewers can search the free collection on the Record Search pilot at FamilySearch.org (click Search Records, and then click Record Search pilot). In the past 18 months, FamilySearch has been diligently publishing digital images and indexes from Southern states. It is part of a worldwide initiative to provide fast, economical access to genealogical records. Fueled by over 100,000 online volunteers, FamilySearch is digitizing and indexing historical records and publishing them online. The most recent additions are from the following collections: * Alabama Statewide Deaths 1908 to 1974 (Index) * Arkansas County Marriages: 1837 to 1957 * Civil War Pension Index Cards (Digital Images) * Florida Deaths 1877 to 1939 (Index) * Florida State Censuses: 1855, 1935, 1945 (Digital Images) * Freedman Bank Records: 1865 to 1874 * Freedman’s Bureau Virginia Marriages 1855 to 1866 * Georgia Deaths 1914 to 1927 * Louisiana War of 1812 Pension Lists (Images) * North Carolina Deaths 1906 to 1930 * North Carolina, Davidson County Marriages and Deaths, 1867–1984 (Digital Images) * South Carolina Deaths 1915 to 1943 * South Carolina Deaths 1944 to 1955 (Index) * Texas Death Index 1964 to 1998 (Index) * Texas Deaths 1890 to 1976 * Virginia Fluvanna County Funeral Home Records 1929 to 1976 (Digital Images) * West Virginia Births 1853 to 1930 (Index) * West Virginia Marriages 1853 to 1970 (Index) * West Virginia Deaths 1853 to 1970 (Index)

I think that the soldier of the Civil War would be his grandson. The elder Sanders Austin Wife was Nancy A. 1. [AUSTIN] William W. Austin, Scottish Captain of a schooner?
    2. Helen
    3. While working on the 1860 census transcription of Georgia for AFGS I came across this fellow and would like to know more about him.  Is he anyone's ancestor? William W. Austin born abt 1823, was age 37 on 11 Jan 1860, born in Dumfries/Dumfriesshire, Scotland. he had a large house with many laborers from Ireland and Scotland, Finland, Sweden and the U. S. in the port of Savannah, District 1, Chatham Co, GA.    (page 7) His occupation is Captain of a Schooner and he had $500.00 worth of personal property. Five other men, apparently, none related to him, lived in the house. I looked in the index of names in AFAOA and did a search on AFGS and did not see him listed.  Nor did I find an easy match on the 1850 or 1870 census in U.S. I did find a possible match on the 1841 census of Dumfriesshire, Scotland, address was Newtown of Sanguhar  and he lived in a household of many Austins.  The William Austin age 16, occupation Hostler, might be him.  The head of the household was Adam Austin age 37, Ag lab. and Helen Austin a possible spouse, age 34. Please reply if you have any further information about this Captain William W. Austin

    1. [AUSTIN] Query: George Austin 1796SC on 1850 census Hancock/Winston Co, AL
    2. Helen
    3. Query: Do you know of any descendants of this family?  What happened to them after `  1850-1860? I am very interested because another researcher made him the father of my John C. b 1831TN and his sister Nancy Ann b 1822-1826 TN , with no explanation or proofs!   George Austin b 1796 SC to TN to AL by 1850 Compiled by Helen 2009 from PAF files     First Generation         1.George Austin  was born in 1796 in ,,SC. He died after 1850 in ,Winston,AL.   Note by Helen Austin- As far as we know this George has not been proven to be the father of our John C. Austin b 1831-31 TN, or the father of Nancy b 1822-1826 TN who married William Lott of Winston/Blount/Morgan/Cullman Co.   However it nas not been disproven.  More research should be done before making any assumptions about this family or any supposed connection to J.C.Austin of Morgan/Winston/Lawrence Co.   This family was living in AL in 1825. In 1828, 1831, and 1837 they were living in TN.  Then in 1840 until 1850 they were in AL.  In 1850 they were in Hancock, later Winston Co.  Family 204, 205, and 206.    The family members of George Austin b 1796 SC should be researched in AL, TN, MO, MS for the years of 1860, 1870, 1880.  Also George should be researched for the period of 1800-1850 in SC and TN and GA.   CENSUS: 1850 U. S. Census, Hancock Co, AL, Dist 38, 21 Nov 1850; swelling 204, Fam 204; Garge Austin 54, m, farmer, SC; Barbary 44 NC; Elizabeth 14 TN; Emeline 17 TN; Carolina 10 AL; James 6 AL; Stephen 5 AL.    Also, P 1045; Dwelling 385, Fam 385; Geo. Austin, 3, F, AL (1857); Georgianna Austin, age 2/12 Yr., F, b AL (1858). Note: although this does not seem to re a related family there are similarities in name and times of birth.   George married Barbara  about 1824 in ,,AL. Barbara was born in 1806 in ,,NC. She died after 1850 in ,Winston,AL.   They had the following children:   +          2M        i.  George Austin  was born in 1825. (Junior)   +          3M        ii.  Jesse Austin  was born in 1828. He died after 1850     Second Generation         2.George Austin  (George) was born in 1825 in ,,AL.   CENSUS: 1850 U. S. Census, Hancock Co (Winston), AL, Northern Dist. 38, 21 Nov 1850; Dwelling 205, Fam 205; George Austin 25, b abt 1825 AL; Silier (Sabiline, Savilla Speegle) age 24 f, AL; Sarah age 1 AL, dau.    SPOUSE: Name is spelled alternately, Savilla, Sabilla, Sevellah, Silier. She is a dau of Daniel Jacob Speegle b 12 Aug 1777 Lincoln Co, NC d 1855 Blount Co, AL; and Mary Ann Lentz who lived in Winston, Blount, Morgan, Cullman counties depending on the county lines.  Speegle Gap was a location of a family home on Lacon Mountain, at the border of Morgan and Hancock Co and near Brushy Creek.. see Ancestry.com research by James Pilkinton of Rossville, GA.  Marriage of record has a George Austin m a Sabilene Speegle.   MILITARY: Ancestry.com has the genealogy of the Speegle family submitted by a James Pilkinton of Rossville, GA.In his posting for George Austin, Jr. he shows a military record for the Mexican War.  It has not been proven that the George Austin of 1850 Hancock census is the same person as the George W. Austin who enlisted in Morgan Co, AL for the Mexican War and was deserted from the army 23 Mar 1847.  There were three other George Austins in North Alabama who could be the soldier.   Civil War.- A CSA soldier George W. 3. Helen, That sounds like a good calculation. Are you referring to Sallie Sarah Leaman? Of Laurens County. She is presently in the "Southern Unplaced Austins" database at http://www.afaoa.org/ . This family presently is headed by Alexander Austin of Antrim, Ireland. However, recent events will allow us to do major updates/corrections to this database, and then make it its own unique family in the "Southern Austins" section. We would appreciate whatever research you or others have on the Laurens County Austins, so that we can present as accurate a picture as possible. Please contact me at lizcarlin@socal.rr.com . I double checked the listing for Mrs. Sarah Austin, wife of Major James Austin of Laurens Co, SC. to be sure I was correct about her death date. The gravestone as transcribed for the Laurens County Cemetery Book had date of death as 22 May 1860, age 67 old, comuting a birth date of 1793. The 1860 Mortality Schedule showed she died in May, age 67 of heart disease.? The doctor treated her for one hour before her death. According to my calculations using what Ancestry.com posted, Sarah would have died in May of 1860, since the Census year used the date of June 1, 1850 to May 31, 1860 for figuring the date of death.?? Do you agree?? That matches the tombstone. ============= Quote from Ancestry.com: Part of the U.S. Federal Censuses from 1850-1880 included a mortality schedule enumerating the individuals who had died in the previous year. Because each of the censuses from 1850-1880 began on June 1, ?previous year? refers to the 12 months preceding June 1, or June 1 (of the previous year) to May 31 (of the census year). This database contains an index to individuals enumerated in these mortality schedules. In addition, each individual is linked to the census image on which they appear. Not all information that is recorded on the actual census is included in the index. 3. The 1850 Mortality Census Schedule covers people who died between June 1, 1849 and May 31 1850. So Jane Austin would have died Nov 1849. Before the census information was taken.
