Shelley, Adeline Austin is a descendant of "Robert Austin of Kingston, Washington Co., Rhode Island". Parents: John Pitt Austin and Nancy Pearce. This database can be found on the Austin Families Assn of America Website www.afaoa.org . You can see it in Family Group Sheet style by going to Austin Research - Northern databases - RI Robert. Or to see it "book" style go to the Text Document Search - Descendancy Books. When searching on a name in Text, there is one minor annoyance. There is a generation number between the given name and the surname when the person appears in the book as the "head" of his family (for example John1 Austin). Use the asterisk as a wild character to get around this feature (to search for John Austin, enter "John*Austin").The quotation marks are required to just return documents with John Austin and not all of the documents containing Austin or John. Please contact Art Sikes, compiler for further information. The Huntsville Library Newsletter that I received today had some good websites suggested. I went to them and did a search for AUSTIN and found quite a few. Since a nomination of a possible site of the 2011 International Austin Convention is in Ireland, some of you may want to work on your Austin ancestors possible Irish link. I hope we get to go to Northern Ireland to Belfast for research, as well as Dublin. it has my vote. My husband's Austin heritage is probably before 1800 in Ireland or GB or Scotland, so that, Austin would not be on the Griffith Valuation. I looked at it anyway. The date is after 1850. this website is great: www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index. I did a search for AUSTIN and it returned 637 hits. For example in the county of Antrim (northern Ireland) there were 7. Don't be surprised that the search shows other surnames. That just means the land was actually owned by someone else. The Leasee, was a AUSTIN. The included Google maps of Ireland are so great. They even show the street and village name and address where the taxable land was located. In the case of John Austin, he had a house and yard in a village that he leased, not a large farm. ------------ Another great website similar to our Ancestry.com for UK research is: www.findmypast.co.uk/home.jsp The great thing is that you do not have to pay to do a search. If you look at a marriage record from a church parish and the search finds a person of interest, you are only required to pay a one time fee for that record result if you want to see the exact document. Happy AUSTIN hunting! I hope I get to see you in Ireland next year.
I'm sorry, but I appear to have deleted the Austin-Austen List Digest of 13 Jul 2010, but I would like to briefly comment on the 3 queries of Helen Austin austinart@bellsouth.net. 1. Now that footnote.com and familysearch.com are putting the original death certificates online for copying, I find some interesting records that I must share. I am thinking about the CT researchers that I have met and the Austin genealogists who might want me to send them attached files of this death certificate . It is two pages. I looked on the AFAOA database for the fellow but he is not there. THOMAS SEPTIMUS AUSTIN b abt 1855 in CT, Home is Stratford, CT. a metalurgist by trade. This is about a search for the parents of some Austins who lived in early Texas. Colorado and Lavaca County, TX. I found the William b 1809 VA who married Blanche Woolsey in Col. Co,TX. William and a relative? brother? Augustus W. J. D. Austin were together, living in 1842 in Colorado County. The records of the TSLA tell the story that when some volunteers were asked for, to go help fight the Mexican General Wol/Wall, in Fall of 1842, some men from Colorado County went to help the Texians. By the time they got to Gonzales, the fighting was over and the Mexicans had retreated. So, they went home. Among the fellows from Col. Co. were William Austin (probably the one I am researching) and his relative the Augustus W. J. D. Austin. It seems Augustus died not long after they men returned to their homes in Colorado County, probably between 1842 and Dec 2, 1846, when Wm. was made adm of the estate of AWJD. Claims were filed to the Treas of the Republic of TX for money for their service. Money was received for both men, by William, for $15.70 , paid in full Aug 10, 1854. That was the year that William married the girl named Blanche Woolsey from Monroe Co, GA. Now how were these two fellows related? Where did they live before 1840? Was Augustus also born in VA? 1840 Republic of TX census, has AWJD Austin paying taxes in Travis, Co, but William was paying taxes in Colorado Co. Help me find a thread before 1840? Parents that are proven? Some folks suggest that Wm. is a desc of John Sr. of Southside VA, but the AFAOA records do not support that. Someone must have some more info? Please post or write to me directly... I am working on a story about some of their descendants.

New info online at Tennessee.gov The TN Archives has a new database of the early State legislative records from 1799-1812. Not seen heretofore on the internet. I looked at all the indices for Austins and found 2. The first one, I think is the John Austin of the 1850 census of McMinn Co, TN. The second one is a Joseph Austin of Jefferson and Hawkins Co, TN. Could he be the one from SC that Pat mentioned in her recent posting to the AUSTIN Genforum.com ? 1. date 1829 #155, McMinn Co, TN John Austin, jailer, Petition asking for fees as a jailer. statements of Arch Turk, Barnard Seay, James Earle, Spencer B.... 2.date 1813 Jefferson/Hawkins Co, TN, #11, session 2, Joseph Austin is indexed Case: Daniel Treadway is asking for a divorce from his wife, Rebecca E. Treadway. Affidavits from Michael Brown, and Joseph Austin. These records can be copied and mailed to you by the Archives. See procedure on their website.
Looking at AUSTINS of the 1870 and 1880 Census in GA or TN. I don't think it is the same family as the William H. Austin b 1858 of Hamilton Co, TN, but I am looking for the parents of John H. Austin b March 1865 in Georgia who lived most of his life on Lookout Mountain in the Chattanooga Valley or Chicamauga area. John married a NC Cherokee woman named Vianey and she is listed on the Cherokee rolls with all their children for years 1931, 1934 1937. the Children were only 1/64 Cherokee by Blood, but Vianey is 1/32 Cherokee. I have census for 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930 as well as the Guion Miller Roll of Eastern Cherokee and the 3 Cherokee census mentioned above. Some of the time the family lived in downtown East Chattanooga, and then later went back to the top of Lookout Mountain in Walker Co, GA. I want the 1870, 1880 census for John H. Austin in GA or TN Please help. Children of John and Viana are: James A. Austin b 1890 m Florence Clark 1910 Maggie C. Austin b 1895 TN m Luther Mullins 1919 Lelia B. Hatteras Island DNA Projects Hatteras Island (current Dare County, NC, former Currituck and Hyde) is a very unique place with an incredibly interesting history and geography as well. * Hatteras Island is the location where the Lost Colonists indicated that they went, to join their friends, the Croatoan Indians. * Hatteras Island has a long history of shipwrecks, with many families carrying the oral history that they descend from shipwreck victims. * Hatteras Island has an equally long oral history that many of the current residents descend from the original residents, the Croatoan (later the Hatteras) Indians. * Early records confirm his history in various ways. For example, by 1710, the Farrows, O'Neals, Hoopers and Wahabs were reported to be "half Indian and half English". * The isolated geography of Hatteras Island served to discourage a lot of movement to the island after the initial land grants were awarded and free/cheap land was no longer available. * The isolated geography prevented or discouraged intermarriage with people not island residents, creating a rather closed community, allowing us the unique opportunity to reconstruct the original island residents from their descendants today. I have compiled a list of early island surnames from deeds, wills, tax lists, militia and other documents. These surnames represent the early island residents up through about 1800. We would like to be able to reconstruct the ethnicity of the earliest island families, especially the wives whose surnames have been lost to time. Using DNA, we will be able to reconstruct those families and help people who cannot identify their ancestors' families to reconnect. PANTER, PAINTER, PANTHER AUSTIN This is a stretch. I am searching for a AUSTIN family of SE US that might be related to a Samuel Austin b Sep 1864 who d 6 Nov 1901 in the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, OK. He applied for Indian land in OK as a full blood Cherokee. However, his children, later, put white on the census box. He may not be on census before 1900 unless listed as white. According to DAWES COMMISSION records of 1900 and 1900 census, Parents of Samuel were PANTER AUSTIN and SALLIE TYLER probably born between 1830-1850 in AL, TN, GA, NC in Cherokee mountain communities. Wife of Sam Austin (or Sam Daylight) was Malinda Ratley b Sep 1865 who married first to Andy Rogers and third in 1901 to James Eagle. Children of Sam and Malinda (Lindy) were Lizzie b Sep 1892, Minnie b Jan 1895, Josie b May 1897, William b Apr 1900 all in Remy, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, Oklahoma. After Panter Austin died, his wife Sallie married George DAYLIGHT, another Cherokee and they lived in Cherokee Nation, I T, OK. Sallie died before 1880 and Samuel Austin raised Sarah Daylight his half/sister. Sarah was still living in 1920 as a single woman in Oklahoma. Lizzie, Minnie and Josie Austin probably married before 1920 and may have descendants. William Austin, b 1900 was still living in 1910 in Remy, OK and may have descendants? Is he one of your ancestors?
From: Helen Cook Austin To: Readers of the Austin List The message I sent to you yesterday about the Stewart Austin, Choctaw, whose wife was Hortense Thompson had a serious error. I wish I could get an answer to the email that I sent to the submitter of a FamilyTree on Ancestry.com that linked Stewart to Josiah Austin of Smith Co, MS. Her handle on the private email of Ancestry.com is ZMATTO ? Anybody know who this is? After studying the more than 30 pages of documents that I have for Stewart Austin born ca 1881 in the Choctaw Nation of Coffadeliah, Neshoba Co, MS I realize that it is highly unlikely that Stewart is a descendant of the line of William Austin of Craven Co, SC. Certainly not a legal one. After a lengthy testimony to the DAWES COMMISSION interrogators in 1901, a conclusion was reached that Stewart was definitely a full blood Choctaw Indian. He not only looked like one, he spoke fluent Choctaw language and could barely speak English. His wife was also a full blood Cherokee. Stewart said he had lived all of his life in the same place, Coffadeliah, Neshoba Co, MS. This is in the North Central part of the state, and I think it is near the present day town of Philadelphia, MS and the SilverMoon Casino on the Choctaw Reservation. Not only that, Stewart only knows that the name of his father was Austin, no other name and that his father died when he was three years old. His mother "Seale" (probably her surname)b abt 1836 died in 1896 only five years before the testimony. Stewart had a brother named John Long. He lives with Ed Henson. I studied some of the 1900, 1880, 1870 census of Neshoba Co, and see that the surnames of Seale, Long and Stewart are common. The community was very sparsely settled. One record had his residence as Seale, MS. I am starting to wonder if his surname was Stewart instead of Austin? This is very interesting research. I am sorry that I jumped ahead with a presumption of someone else's undocumented research. Forgive my faux pas. I will try to do better. It will take me a while to get this ready for you to hear more about at the June Meeting. Vernon and I are driving to Houston, TX to see my family soon, and I might drive by Neshoba County for a look-see at their records. After all, the casinos are inexpensive places to stay overnight and they are certainly entertaining.
DAWES ROLL of Choctaw N Am of 1901 has this family. They are on the 1910 census of Neshoba Co, MS. They got land in OK and removed from MS to OK after 1903. Stewart Austin b abt 1885 Smith Co, MS Choctaw, wife is Hortense Thompson Austin b abt 1885 MS, Choctaw her mother, Martha Bell Thompson, a dau of Allison or Ailen Bell and Rebecca Bell, all of MS Choctaw. father of Hortense is James Thompson, Choctaw of Neshoba, MS Stewart is a son of Josiah Austin and Jane Catherine Kinard of Smith Co, MS. They are desc of William Austin of Craven Co, SC. See AFAOA files and Ancestry.com. I am working on his biographical sketch and would like to have more info on the families, especially the Choctaw connections of the Kinard, Thompson, Bell and Rogers families.
----- Original Message ----- From: Charles Austin To: Harold Steiner Cc: Charles Austin Sent: 12/22/2009 9:29 PM Subject: Which William? Dear Hal: I’ve been thinking about two Austin problems which we have discussed: the possible relationships between (1) Philip and Absalom, and (2) Larkin K. and James S. The second question is easiest to deal with, because despite supporting evidence of geographic proximity (in Wayne County, Illinois, as shown by census records), the DNA evidence argues against Larkin and James being brothers. Larkin and James The 1840 federal census of Illinois showed a James Austin and a Larkin K. Austin separated by four lines on the census page , possibly making them near neighbors, in an unidentified location in Illinois (“the division allotted to Daniel Lunney [?].” ) Later census records included: 1850: James Austin with wife Delilah S. and four children (not including Francis Marion, b. 1852) in Hitesville Precinct of Coles County, but no record of an Austin named Larkin K., Larkin, L.K. or L.R. 1860: L.R. Austin with wife Louisa A. and seven children including Jasper, age 8 and Jonathan, age 7, in Township 1S, range 5E (which may have been 5W according to one source) in Wayne County. This was clearly Larkin K. despite the wrong middle initial, because Jasper and Jonathan were in the two DNA lines from Larkin. No record of James and Delilah found. (There is a James Austin, age 20, living near “L.R.”, possibly an older son of Larkin.) 1870: James Austin with wife Delilah S. and seven children, now including Francis, age 8 (b.1852), in Four Mile Township of Wayne County. No record of Larkin (or “L.R.”) found. !880: Jasper Austin, apparently age 24, with wife and two children, may be Larkin’s son Jasper despite age discrepancy (Larkin’s Jasper b. 1853), in Four Mile Township of Wayne County. 1900: Jonathan Austin, b.1855, with wife and nine children, in Four Mile township of Wayne County. This suggests that James S, and Larkin K. moved to Illinois with their families by 1840, and at least after 1860 may have both lived in Four Mile Township in Wayne County in southern Illinois. This in turn suggests at least an acquaintance and probably a family relationship, but the DNA results give a fairly small probability that they were brothers. Their donors are either a 35/37 match (kits 32203 and 118609) or a 36/37 match (kits 98075 and 118609). If Larkin and James were brothers, their father would be the MRCA of each of these pairs of donors. He would be four generations back from the donors. The probability of an MRCA within 4 generations, assuming mutation rate 0.0045, is 14.2% for a 35/37 match, and 37.8% for a 36/37 match. With an average mutation rate of 0.004 the probabilities would be slightly lower. These are “Bill Jackson” estimates, and FTDNA might give slightly higher probabilities, but they do not seem to support your hypothesis that Larkin and James were brothers. On the other hand, a low probability is not the same as impossibility. Improbable events do occur. Consider the two donor-descendents of Larkin (his great grandchildren). They are only a 34/37 match, but their documented MRCA is Larkin himself, only three generations back from them. The Bill Jackson probability of a 34/37 match having MRCA within at most 3 generations is 1.7% (using rate 0.0045). Nearly impossible! But it happened. See why they say that DNA cannot prove anything, it can only give probabilities? Absalom and Philip Each of Absalom and Philip has one line leading to a DNA donor (kit 124161 for Absalom, kit 27680 for Philip), and those donors are a 35/37 match. If Philip’s father and Absalom were brothers, their father would be the MRCA of these two donors. He is 9 generations back from 124161 and 8 generations back from 27680. The Bill Jackson probability of an MRCA within at most 9 generations, for a 35/37 match, is 47.9% with mutation rate 0.004, and 55.7% with mutation rate 0.0045. This does not preclude their being brothers, but it is not very strong evidence that they were brothers. (The chances are about 50/50, one would say.) If you have good documentation showing that Absalom was Philip’s uncle, then he probably was. The DNA result doesn’t contradict this. The number of generations needed to get the near certainty of 95% probability is 22 if the mutation rate is 0.004, and 19.6 if the rate is 0.0045, as you correctly observed. Even assuming that the average rate for the first 37 markers is 0.0045, 19.6 generations (effectively 20 generations) is still a long time. Converting it to years requires an assumption about the average length of the generations in this particular line. You have assumed 20 years between generations, but the average generational gap in the generations of the Philip line is about 30 years (1937-1758=179, and 179/6=29.83 years). For the Absalom line it is (1972-1725)/8 = 30.9, about 31 years. I would suggest using 30 years as the average generational distance in both lines of descent. If the MRCA is 20 generations back from the Absalom donor (124161), then he is 18 generations back from the Philip donor. The birthdate of this MRCA is approximately 600 years before 1972 (1372), or 540 years before 1937 (1397). Since both these figures are approximations, and since the MRCA of the two donors has 95% probability of being at most 20 generations back from each of them, we can say that the MRCA of the Absalom and Philip donors (who is also the MRCA of Absalom and Philip) was almost certainly born after 1370. That doesn’t really tell you much about the relationship between Absalom and Philip. In fact, 1370 is barely within the age of surnames. Which William? Reviewing the manuscript for your Chapter 11 (which I still have on my computer), I see that the candidates are “(KW4) William” and “(QA11) William.” It appears that (KW4) William is the son of William bc.1710 MD, and great-grandson of William bc.1657 of MD (Kent County). But (QA11) William, son of John and Rosamond, is not on the chart. Nothing is known about his DNA. The donor descendents of (KW4) William (kits 18245 and 34236) are both 34/37 matches with the donor descendents of Philip and Absalom, suggesting that Philip and Absalom are related to the line of William of Kent, but not necessarily very closely. (You can work out the Bill Jackson probabilities for the tMRCAs here.) Without knowing something about the DNA of (QA11) William, there is nothing the present DNA results can tell you about which William went to North Carolina.
Florence Freestone Austin Dec. 4, 1925 - Jan. 11, 2010 Florence Freestone Austin was born December 4, 1925, in Safford, Arizona, to Charles Edward Freestone and Vesta Skaggs Freestone. She passed away January 11, 2010, in Stockton, California. She was raised in Safford and Mesa, Arizona, with her brothers, James Edward and Lloyd Franklin, and loving sister Ruth. She graduated from Mesa Union High and St. Joseph's School of Nursing, Phoenix, Arizona. She married Dr. Robert George Austin on September 12, 1946, and five children were born to them: Robert George, Jr., Stockton; Kathryn (Michael Hanna), Murray, Utah: Janyce Streeter, Cedar Hills, Utah; Ruth (Greg Jensen), Provo, Utah; and Paul Murray (Tamara), Santa Cruz, California. While working as a nurse to support her husband in medical school in Arizona, and helping him complete a residency in psychiatry in Bellevue, Washington, she lovingly raised her children. She sacrificed for them to have opportunities to develop talents and interests. We camped, learned piano, rode horses, danced, traveled, swam competitively, participated in Scouts and singing clubs. Her efforts to raise her children with rich and stimulating lives paid off, and she was proud that all of her children received post-graduate education. We are deeply grateful for her support, encouragement, and love. Once her family was raised, she returned to college herself to finish her own B.A. in History and Anthropology from California State University, Stanislaus. She welcomed international students into her home, generously helped with their studies, and completely enjoyed being immersed in other cultures. She cooked gourmet foods from many lands, decorated her home with everything from Navajo art to African masks, and made many, dear friends from all over the world. She energetically pursued a career as a real estate entrepreneur with the faithful support of her son Bob. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she especially delighted in her work teaching young children. She was active in the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. Truly she was a brilliant and fascinating lady. Florence is survived by all of her children; sixteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; her sister, Ruth Brinton of Gilbert, Arizona; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, and husband. Funeral services will be held at the LDS Chapel at 7030 N. El Dorado Street, Stockton, California, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 23, 2010. Funeral services will also be held at the LDS Stake Center, 3950 W. Cedar Hills Drive, Cedar Hills, Utah, at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 30, 2010. Internment is at Alpine City Cemetery in Alpine, Utah.
