Thank you Carl, You have a most impressive website !
I have just completed a three-year task, the digitization of the Vital Records of Amherst, Hampshire Co, MA. They have been posted on Jane Devlins's Website, at http://dunhamwilcox.net/ma/0-index_amherst.htm There are 25 entries of the Austin surname. One section of the records are a bit unusual. It contains residents of Amherst who were not born, married, or did not die in the Town. They were culled from Tax Lists, Court Records, Selectman's meeting, Town military enlistment records. Those who have "brick walls" should look here. Carl Hommel

William LaneAustin(1933-1941): William Lane Austin rose through the ranks at the Census Bureau, climbing from clerk to director, over the course of his career. Born in Mississippi in 1871, he graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1897, earning his law degree a year later. However, Austin chose to become a teacher rather than pursue a career in law. In 1900, he accepted an appointment as a clerk for the Census Office, staying with the agency when it became the permanent Census Bureau in 1902. From 1913 until 1917, Austin was chief clerk of the Census Bureau; from 1917 to 1932, he was chief statistician for agriculture, as well as chief statistician for cotton and tobacco statistics. For the first half of 1933, he was assistant director of the Census Bureau. In April of that year, after William Mott Steuart retired, President Franklin Roosevelt appointed Austin director. As director, Austin oversaw eight years of experimentation and change in census and survey work, including the introduction of statistical sampling in the 1940 census. He died in Mississippi in 1949. Source of this article (above) with a photo is http://www.census.gov/history/www/census_then_now/director_biographies Note: to Austin researchers from Helen on March 6, 2012 Thanks to William Lane Austin, the Director of the 1940 U. S. Census and to many other U. S. Government workers, we will be able to actually view the digital copy of the 1940 Census on April 1, 2012. There is also a guide and map for the ED district locations that you will need in order to find a person. No general name index will be available right away. Today’s message is sent to you for you to add to your records or for future reference. I did not find the 1910 census yet, so I do not know if he had any children. Since no children lived with him in 1920 or 1930, I assume that he and D. had none. Of course, they might have been sent to boarding school. The 1940 census should have an interesting entry for William! Enjoy.

Wayne, Your John Austin family can be found on the Austin Families Assn of America Website www.afaoa.org . You can see it in Family Group Sheet style by going to Austin Research - Southern databases - NC John Austin. Or to see it "book" style go to the Text Document Search - Descendancy Books. When searching on a name in Text, there is one minor annoyance. There is a generation number between the given name and the surname when the person appears in the book as the "head" of his family (for example John1 Austin). Use the asterisk as a wild character to get around this feature (to search for John Austin, enter "John*Austin").The quotation marks are required to just return documents with John Austin and not all of the documents containing Austin or John. Unfortunately, we don't have John's ancestors. Please look it over, if you have any additions/ Corrections, please let us know. To all our Austin family, Recently, there have been numerous updates to our databases, so come take a look, and don't forget the Master Index. John Austin, born abt 1748 or 1755, died in 1806 in Johnston County, North Carolina, he was married to a Mary. There were several children from their marriage: my direct line is thru his son John Austin born 30 Mar 1774 in Johnston County, NC, died in 1846 in Dale County, Alabama. John married Sarah Youngblodd in 1803 in NC. They moved from NC to Georgia, sometimes after their marriage with several other families. Later after their stay in Georgia and the birth of another couple of children they relocated over into Dale County, Alabama. My particular interest is who was John's (1748-1806) parents, where did they originate from, and John (1774-1846 had a son Green Austin 1807-1847 who is my direct great, great grandfather, but the information is limited on him. Also, I have done the Austin Project DNA and I was wondering if anyone from this line of Austin's had submitted to it? Thanks, very much for any information that someone may have. I will await any replies. Wayne Austin bethwayne@bellsouth.net ------------------------------ To contact the AUSTIN list administrator, send an email to AUSTIN-admin@rootsweb.com. Again, I found the boss of William Austin 1831 PA- 1901 CA. The "Famous" one. He was Jeremiah DePue Curtis b 1847 Danville, IN, d 1894 Ukiah, CA. He is buried in Ukiah Cem, Mendocino CA. wife was Fannie Walker "Tiny". They had 12 ch. His stageline ran from San Francisco to Ukiah, CA. I found him first on the Curtis page of Genforum.com So, if you see anything more about him, please send it my way, there may be more about William Austin, his stagedriver in the record. Thanks.
Oops! I made a mistake. Writing from the back of my head is not a good idea. I mis-remembered the name of the "famous" mountain stageline-owner and driver. His name was Doc Curtis, not Davis. If he was so famous, why can't I find anything about him.? I don't have his first name, just the nickname. The article about the accident was in the California Digital Newspaper Collection. A good search engine that highlights the exact name of William Austin in any news article. San Francisco, CA, Vol 73, No. 107, 17 Mar 1893, "Fall Over a Precipice Narrow Escape of Two Men in the Overturning of a Wagon" Ukiah, CA. It reads like a old Audie Murphy western movie of the 1950's. I transcribed it and am anxious to put it into the story about William Austin for all Austin researchers to read. I just need some more information about what William Austin (no middle name in any of his records) was doing from 1831 in PA until he enlisted in St. Louis, MO in Company E, 1st MO Lt. Artillery. April 27, 1861. Some thirty years not accounted for. Parents unknown, but both born in PA. Williams muster rolls show he was also in the Co E. 1st Regt MO Inf, and Co A 5th MO Inf. He mustered out Jul 25, 1865 Benton Bks (Breaks?) MO. In 1897, four years after the stage wreck, William Austin entered the Pacific Branch National Home for Disabled Volunteer Veterans in Sawtelle, (Los Angeles) CA. He died there in 1901.
I am looking for the wife and possible children of William Austin b 1831 PA, a soldier in the Civil War, Union of MO. He was a stage driver for an express company, and was living in Canyon City, Fremont Co, CO in 1880 census. He might have run a stage line from Colorado City to the Silver and Lead mines, or a stage line from Canyon City by the Royal Gorge, west to Salt Lake City or California. > >At any rate, he was living in Ukiah City, CA before 1887 and worked for a >"famous" stageline owner at that time, by the name of "Doc" Davis. They had a >serious wreck with a stage and team of 6 horses 13 miles north of Ukiah, at a >place called Blue Slide. A landslide came about and nearly killed William. > >He survived and entered the Pacific National Home for Disabled Volunteer >Soldiers in 1897. It was in LA. He died there in 1901 and was buried in the Home >Cemetery. > >I am trying to find out more about Williams wife who was deceased before 1880, >and any possible children. Also need to know about this parents who were born in >PA. I can't find him on any census before 1880. > >Urgently need this information so I can finish a story about William Austin, the >brave stagedriver of the Old West. > >Write to me by email. >
