Looking for family of the late Joseph Austin who died in 1975 Francis Helen & Alfred. Francis children Robert & Priscilla born 1937 & 1939 .
I am researching the Austin families of early Franklin Co, TN. In particular the War of 1812 (Creek Indian War) Volunteers: James M. Austin b 1786/1788 SC David Austin b 1791-1799 TN William Austin b 1792 TN Their parents probably came to the Southwest Territory of Tennessee about 1790 from SC. FACTS: According to the DNA Project of AFAOA.org, William is a match to the family of Nathaniel Austin of Gilder's Creek, Greenville, SC. I do have a marriage record for the James M. Austin to a Sarah Ann Green in 1814 in Winchester,Franklin, TN Also the U.S. Census of 1830 Franklin Co, TN for a David Austin who appears to be married with 6 children. 1830 U. S. Census of Morgan Co, AL also has a David Austin. All three men removed to Morgan and Lawrence Co, AL 1818-1830. David said he lived in AL for a year or more until he left for TX. In 1834 David removed to Fort Bend Co. TX and fought in the War of Texas Independence. He then served in the Army of the Republic of TX. I have the Military service records and pensions for all three men. No definite proof has been found that shows that James M. Austin is related to David and William. However, James M. Austin and wife Sarah Green moved from AL to Henry Co, GA when her brother, William Green moved there. After that Sarah moved to Gordon Co., GA where there were some Austin descendants of Nathaniel of Greenville. Her son, James Calvin Austin lived for over 30 years in Randolph Co, AL where there were other descendants of Nathaniel of Greenville. I would like to find a male descendant of James or David who would be willing to participate in the AFAOA DNA testing for further research into these families. Right now, I am trying to find the parents or relatives for these Austins. Thanks, Helen
My Austin ancestors (only have one name so far) was Rosannah Austin, born about 1816, married Squire Waters. 1880 Cannon County, TN census shows her as 66 years old, born in Virginia. It shows her mother in Virginia and her father born in England. Note: Census for Warren County, TN for 1850 says she was born in TN. I have not been able to find my record, but did have a census in one or other of these counties that showed an Austin family near, and I think the head of household was a doctor. Do not know of a relationship. Bonnie
From: Liz Austin Carlin Genealogist Austin Families Assn of America www.afaoa.org 1.Susan is very much responsible for her family's listing in the "Northern Unplaced Austins" database. 2. Francine, I hope you have seen your family in the "MD John and Charity Austin" database. I'm sorry that I don't recognize your name, but I can't add anything further. Original: Using the new "Place Name Search" found on the Beta Test Research site, there were Austins from the "John Austin of Southside VA" and the "SC Nathaniel Austin" databases in Newton County, but about 20 years after your David Smith and Sarah Austin. There was one Austin though in "Southern Unplaced AUSTINS", a Toliver Lewis Austin, born ~1819 SC,who married Elizabeth Loyal, 7 Nov 1844 in Newton, GA. They moved on to Coosa Co., AL. We've been unable to establish his parents. -----Original Message----- Sent: Wednesday, August 28, 2013 12:01 AM To: austin@rootsweb.com Subject: AUSTIN Digest, Vol 8, Issue 14 Today's Topics: 1. I’m hoping that someone who reads this can help me solve a ‘mystery’. Rev. Simeon Austin (1818-1899), son of Freeman & Catherine (van Wagenen) Austin, was the brother of my great-great-great-grandfather, Charles Austin (1811-1842). I’m attempting to correct what I believe to be an inaccuracy that has popped up all over the internet, including the AFAOA database. In numerous family trees I see the note that Rev. Simeon Austin “...was also known as "Samuel", and “Samuel” has been added as a middle or even first name in some trees. I began compiling information on this Austin family some 20 years or so ago and have never found anything that shows that Simeon was known as Samuel. Today I took a look at all of the records/publications that I have that he is listed in and there is not a single one that gives his name as Samuel, mentions that he was known as Samuel, or that even shows a middle initial for him. They consistently refer to him as “Simeon Austin” with the only exception being the 1885 Nebraska State Census which says “Simon”. The addition of Samuel to his name seems to have come about some time in the last 3 or 4 years, and has now made it’s way into many public member trees on Ancestry.com. Possibly their ‘source’ is the AFAOA’s Thomas Austin of Rhode Island database (which appears to have been revised in 2011)? Previously, he was in everyone’s files simply as Simeon Austin. When I asked the AFAOA compiler if he could tell me the source, he could not. I have contacted a few people who have this same information in their public trees, but so far I have found no one who can site a source for this claim. . So, I’m wondering: Is there really anything out there to substantiate the claim that he was called Samuel was part of his name, or something that he was called? If so, would someone please share that source? At this point it appears it would be simpler if I am proven wrong than to try and get everyone to change their files! Really hoping for some feedback here. Thank you! Marilyn
