Pg. 2 of "Nathaniel Austin Sr. of Greenville County, South Carolina" (on AFAOA website) claims that Nathaniel Austin received a Royal Grant of 500 acres of land on Little River (later named Gilder's Creek), a branch of the Saluda in 1769. I have not found evidence of this. Howver, there *was* a grant of 100 acres in 1766 on Little Creek of Saluda River. The only grant of 500 acres I found was in 1797, "lying on both sides of the dividing line of Laurens and Greenville Counties on the North Fork of Durbins Creek." So, two questions - what is the source of the 1769 grant and was Gilder's Creek really originally called Little River? I appreciate any help. Vickie Elam White
I took the autosomal DNA test through Family Tree DNA. My Kit # there is 244677. I also uploaded my results to GEDMatch.com, and my Kit # there is T119913. My brother, Nathaniel Gerard Elam, also took the test. His Kit # at FTDNA is 469812 and at GEDMatch.com is Kit # T181604. We descend from Irena Jane Austin (1817 SC-1880 GA) & John Elam (1809 SC-1888 GA). Irena was a daughter of William T. Austin (1788 SC - 1822 GA), who was a son of John J. Austin (1770 NC - ca 1855 GA) and his supposed wife, Lucretia Harris (1768 VA - 1850 + GA). Any cousins out there? Vickie Elam White

Alan, Thank you for responding to my postings. Part of my problem is that my Benjamin (F?) Austin was NOT the son of Stephen Austin of Hardin Co., TN, as is INCORRECTLY posted on Find-A-Grave. Stephen Austin never was in Burke Co., NC, which is where my Benjamin married Sarah “Sallie” Ellis in 1810 before moving to TN. (Sarah appears to have been the daughter of Samuel Ellis, of Iredell & Burke Cos,, NC.) There were several Austin men in Burke Co., NC who could have been the father of my Ben. Who his father was is what I am attempting to determine. My feeling is that I cannot rule out that My Benjamin may have HAD family that is not clear from the records so far discovered, xo I can’t rule out any possibility. It might be that the Henderson County, Tennessee connection of Samuel Alvis Austin (1815- 1873) is just a coincidence. But I am just trying to keep an open mind about all of it, because it is not yet clear, and so needs further research. Pam pamstone@cfl.rr.com From: Alan Miller [mailto:alanmiller47@gmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, July 21, 2015 10:54 PM To: austin@rootsweb.com; pamstone@cfl.rr.com Cc: Wayne Austin Subject: Benjamin Austin Descendants Pam, I am not related to this Benjamin Austin. My gg grandfather was Benjamin Franklin Austin who was born in Scotts Hill, Henderson, TN in 1838 and died there in 1914. His father was Charles Austin who was the first settler in Scotts Hill, Henderson, Tennesee in 1825. He was born in 1796 in Anson County, NC and died in 1875 in Scotts Hill, Henderson, TN. I did searched in Ancestry.com and found links to Findagrave.com records for your Benjamin Austin, his father Stephen Austin and Benjamin's son Samuel Alvis Austin. See below. Samuel Alvis Austin and his son David W. Austin are in the 1850 and 1860 censuses of Hardin County, TN. I found a marriage record for David W. Austin and Martha Ann Campbell who married on 26 Mar 1868 in Stoddard, MO. Their son Walter Austin was one year old in the 1880 Census of Union, Ripley, MO. I am sure there is more about their descendants in Ancestry.com, but I didn't have time to pursue this. I can't find a connection to my Austin lineage. -- Alan Miller alanmiller47@gmail.com Stephen Austin http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr <http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=10164690> &GRid=10164690 Birth: Nov. 4, 1755 Halifax County Virginia, USA Death: 1850 Hardin County Tennessee, USA Stephen Austin was born in Halifax County, Virginia, on November 4, 1755, to John Austin Jr. and Mary McBee. He married Dorcas Pinson, daughter of Delilah and Aaron Pinson, in 1775, in Grayson County, Virginia. Dorcas was born about 1757 in Laurens, South Carolina, and died April 12, 1836, in Hardin County, Tennessee. Stephen and Dorcas had these children together: William, Stephen, Saunders A., Robert, Elizabeth, John, and Rebecca. Stephen was a Revolutionary War soldier. At the age of 21, he enlisted in the cavalry of Major William Armstrong and Col. Washington. He served five years in the Light Horse Dragoons of General Green's division in Surry County, North Carolina, but the last 2 years hired a substitute. After the war, he returned to Virginia and lived there for twenty years. He then moved to Tennessee and lived in Warren, Giles, Wayne, and Hardin Counties. >From information researched by Janet Austin Curtis, with help from Oliver Qualls of Savannah, TN and Mrs. Orville Sharp of Florence, AL, family tradition among the descendants of Stephen would seem to indicate that he was sort of a "wagon master" who made trips back to North Carolina and Virginia and led settlers from there into Tennessee. Supposedly, he made his last trip when he was 70 years old and came back with 30 families, mostly relatives from VA and NC, who settled in Wayne Co., TN, along Second Creek; in Hardin Co., TN, along Hollands Creek; and in Lauderdale Co., AL, along Bumpas Creek. Since he does not show up in many census schedules, this seems like a likely explanation for these absences. Stephen died in 1850 in Hardin County, Tennessee, and was buried in the Hollands Creek Cemetery, Savannah, Hardin County, Tennessee. Hi, everyone, I am in search of male descendants of Benjamin F.(?) (1787-1861) & Sarah Ellis (1795-1864) Austin of Burke Co., North Carolina, Blount Co., Tennessee, and Hardin Co., TN. I hope to enlist their help in proving Benjamin's true origins through DNA testing, as there were several possible fathers for Ben, proven by early census records in the Burke Co., NC area. From my research, I believe Ben's wife, Sarah Ellis, to have been the daughter of Samuel Ellis, of Iredell & Burke Cos., NC. Benjamin was a blacksmith. There were several early Austin families in Hardin Co., Tennessee, but it does not appear to me that they were closely related (lots of misinformation on the Internet about these families.) I have tracked all of Ben & Sarah's descendants as far as I could, but I am focusing on the males at this time. I am descended from Ben & Sarah's younger son, David M. Austin (possibly David Marsden?), whose descendants have been extremely difficult to locate. However, I am beginning these postings with the known male descendants of Ben & Sarah's older son, Samuel Alvis Austin (1815-1873.) Benjamin & Sarah Ellis Austin had children: Eliza Louisa Austin, b. 1813, Burke Co., North Carolina; m., 1829, Blount Co., TN, Larkin Yount Samuel Alvis Austin, b. 1815, Burke Co., North Carolina David M. Austin, b. 1817, Virginia(?) (NC?) Lucinda Austin, b. 1822, b. Tennessee; m. James Reed (Unknown Daughter) Austin, b. 1825-1829 (m. Unknown Stanfield) Elizabeth A. Austin, b. 1826, Tennessee Samuel Alvis Austin was born 1815 in Burke Co., North Carolina; he married Mary Jane Brigance (1820-1893), the daughter of Clinton & Sarah (Bayes?) Brigance of Henderson Co., Tennessee. Samuel was a blacksmith, and died in Henderson Co., TN after living in Hardin Co., TN for many years. I will post the children of Samuel Alvis & Mary Jane Brigance Austin in the next installment, but will concentrate on the male sons who I have proven to have survived and have had descendants until fairly recently. Look forward to new discoveries in this big Austin line! The Austins of America Families website is at http://www.afaoa.org/ Pam pamstone@cfl.rr.com
