This was sent to another list but I think many would appreciate the help in understanding in how our relationships work! ************************************************************ It's really easy to figure out cousin relationships if you just draw yourself a ladder as follows: A -------- B siblings C -------- D 1st cousins E -------- F 2nd cousins G --------- H 3rd cousins At the top, A and B are siblings. Everyone below A and B are the children of the person above (i.e. C is the child of A; E is the child of C; D is the child of B, etc.). Going straight across the rungs, the relationships are as indicated above. Going diagonally across the ladder, the relationships are taken from the higher horizontal and are 'removed' by the number of generations difference. So, you can see that C and D are first cousins, but C and F are first cousins, once removed. C and H are first cousins, twice removed. E and H are second cousins, once removed. You can go on forever with this.
