    3. from Grolier Encyclopaedia under heading BRIBIE ISLAND In Moreton Bay, Qld, 20 miles long and from one to five miles wide, it is now a Brisbane seaside resort. When Matthew FLINDERS landed here in 1799, he saw his first dugong which he took to be a sea-lion, he also had an encounter with the natives. The BRIBIE Islanders, now extinct, were a savage race who terrorized the mainland tribes. It was a BRIBIE that the explorer John OXLEY in 1823 met the shipwrecked convict, Thomas PAMPHLETT (q.v.) who guided him to the entrance of the Brisbane River. The small town of Bribie lies at the south-west corner of the island; two navigation lights are maintained at the northern end. ¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ Regards, Mary of Melbourne FOSTER, Coventry - PRITCHARD,Coventry - GEOFFREY, Middlesex - ORCHARD, Warminster, Wiltshire STUART,Glasgow, - EDWARDS,England, GREATZ,NSW - PFITZNER, Prussia WILLIAMS,CUNNINGHAM, HUMPHREYS,MULVIHILL - All to Victoria Australia
