My ancestor, Alfred Plumridge, is listed as an engine driver on his daughter's marriage certificate in 1897. In an obituary notice for him, in March 1922, it states "he was an engine driver on the railways 35 years ago" (which would have been about 1887). Could any listers advise if there are records in existence for railway employees during this time period? Also, could anyone suggest any books on railways during the 1880-1900 period, especially those that may include the Newcastle area. I would really appreciate any help or suggestions. Thanks, Maureen.
