If from NSW there really isnt a best way as no departure records have survived till c 1906 . There are ways to narrow down the time If before 1891 you could checked the UK census. If they owned their own home a check at the Land titles Office may give a clue or two . Another check would be in the Sands PO directories...find the year they disappeared . Assisted arrivals to Sydney are indexed to 1896. Ships names and arrival dates are in this 1880 -1896 index. Sailing ships took a while to turn around but steam ships didnt. Quite a few P & O ships did fairly regular journeys UK - AUS .
