    3. A slight clarification, in Australia we have the PAL Television system as used in much of Europe. In the U.S.A. they use the NTSC (never the same colour) Television system, the signals of the two are incompatible, however some modern machines, both TV's and Videos have the ability to be switched from one system to the other. Hence the situation of some people being able to watch the videos and some not. The VHS system refers to the method of storing the signal on the video tape and not the type of signal on the tape. Most videos are nowadays VHS however there are probably some who still have the old (and better) BETA sytem but they are few and far between. You can liken the beta and vhs argument to PC and Mac in computers every one knows that Mac is better but not many buy them cos you cant get the same amount of purpose made software etc. just as you don't see many beta videos in the video stores!
