Dear Sherrie, from Grolier Encyclopaedia under heading DAVID JONES (1793-1873) Business-man, was born at Llandilofawr, Wales on 8th March, 1793. he was trained in business in his native place and at an early age went to London where he mastered the English language and was employed by a firm of wholesale drapers. In 1834 he met Charles APPLETON, who had a business in Sydney, and entered into partnership with him. Jones arrived at Hobart in 1835 and opened a wholesale business under the name of Appleton and Jones. Later in that year he transferred to Sydney where Appleton had a business which traded as Appleton & Bourne; but after the arrival of Jones the firm became Appleton & Jones. Appleton who had been away from Aust. for several years, returned in April 1838 and shortly afterwards the partners disagreed. Appleton attempted to place a manager in charge of the concern and Jones pushed both men out of the shop-for which he was charged with assault. Jones then began business on his own account at the corner of George and Barrack Streets, where (amongst other places) David Jones Ltd. (which until 1906 was called David Jones & Co.) still trades. In 1857 he retired from the firm but in 1860 returned to it owing to the failure of his successors. He returned again in 1868 and later disposed of his interest to Charles EDWARDS, James F. WOODWARD and Edward Lloyd JONES, his fourth son and the father of Sir Charles Lloyd JONES, the firm's present (1956) chairman of directors. In May 1856 he was appointed to the Legislative Council; from that he retired in 1860. He was also for a time an alderman of the Sydney City Council. He was a prominent member of the Congregational Church and a memorial tabled was placed in the Pitt Street church after his death. He died at Sydney on 29th March 1873. He was twice married; his first wife died early, leaving no children, and subsequently, when in London he married Jane Hall MANDER, who whom he had four sons and four daughters. Within 10 years, it was known affectionately as DJs. Jones retired 1857, selling the store to the partnership of Thompson and Simmonds. | | They proceeded to take the thriving business to bankruptcy within three years. Jones again took control, and within a few years had paid the creditors 20 shillings in the pound. | | This time, he left the management to his son, Edward Lloyd Jones, and by 1938, the firm had expanded to its current three large city stores. | | I've gone through 400 odd listings of David Jones family history/genealogy and can't find anyone researching this family. Most of the listings were for David Jones Store related stories or people stating an ancestor had onced worked for David Jones! | | I'm trying to find out whether another 'David Jones' who built 'The Towers' at Belmore NSW, in 1888 is a descendant of David & Jane Jones. | | I believe David Jones' son, Edward Lloyd Jones (b.1844 Sydney) married Helen Ann Jones in 1868. | | I found another snippet stating Edward L Jones was killed in a train accident in 1894. | | Can anyone help? | | Kind regards, | Sherrie Blackman. | Sydney. | | | | | | ==== AUSSIE-GEN-RESEARCH Mailing List ==== | Have you visited AUSSIE-GEN-RESEARCH Web site yet? | Please do?
