My grandfather was William Matlock and his only living record that I have is his marriage certificate. Born 15 Jan. 1873 (old bible), Married 11 Oct. 1905, Died 11 Jne. 1947. Place of birth "Gippsland" Wife shown on certificate as Maud Murdock Paton. Father shown as Thomas Matlock, Carpenter. Mother as Maria Hallam. None of the "digger" records seem to connect to parents. Hi Ruth Thanks for the thought, I do not rule anything out but if you can't find in any of the BDM records and nobody reports a gravesite one thinks of possible arrival by sea anywhere in Australia, maybe jumped ship, incorrect name, no or destroyed records, etc. An added problem is that Gippsland is such a large area to search and the information on the marriage certificate may be incorrect anyhow.
