Hello Alice, While I don't know any information about the particular asylum you mentioned in Victoria, the name "Magdalan/ Magdalene" was usually given to homes for "unmarried mothers" or girls deemed to be "in moral danger" or "fallen or wayward" girls. The name Magdalan/Magdalene was taken from the bible in which Mary of Magdalene was a prostitute who became a follower of Jesus. As a result, women who followed the trade became known as "Magdalan's" and then the term was applied to any girl/woman whose "morals" were in question.
