    1. [A.G.R. ] JOSIAH EDWARDS
    2. Gillian
    3. Hello everybody, You've all been very helpful in the past so I'm trying my luck once again. My great grandfather's brother and his family appear to have vanished without trace from England c.1870 - to date no death certs found, etc. We suspect that they may have emigrated to Australia. The family I am trying to chase are: JOSIAH EDWARDS born c. 1829 Lancashire Ann born c. 1833 - Lancashire Frederick born 1851 - Lancashire Josiah b. 1857 - lancashire Mildred born c. 1860 - Cheshire Alfred born c. 1867 - Cheshire Sarah born c. 1869 - Cheshire The main reason for this hunch is that Josiah's nephew emigrated to Australia {Victoria} 1925 by himself at the age of 19. We suspect that he may have had relatives to go to. I realise it's a shot in the dark but if anybody can point me in the right direction as to where I should begin this search I'd be grateful. Thanks, Gillian in rainy Guildford, England The last time we have any trace of Josiah and his family are in 1861. At that time they were living in Church Lane, Tarporley, Cheshire. In that census Josiah is aged 32, Ann is aged 28, Frederic is aged 10 and Josiah is aged 4. If they did emigrate then I think it likely that those four may have gone. There were three other children - Mildred (born about 1860) Alfred (my Great Grandfather born in July 1867) and Sarah (born about 1869). These three were also born in Tarporley so it would indicate that Josiah and his family were probably still in Tarporley until about 1870. As yet we have been unable to trace any of the family in the 1871 census. They were certainly not in Tarporley as a family unit at that time. The next sighting I have of any of them is in 1881 when Alfred is in domestic service on a farm in Whitchurch, Shropshire, Sarah is an inmate of the Workhouse in Whitchurch, Shropshire and Mildred is married to a Welsh Tin Plate Worker some 33 years her senior !! Her marriage took place in Tarporley in March 1878 and she was still living there in 1881. The marriage certificate does not show that her father, Josiah, is deceased.

    2. Hello listers I am wrapping up my project of many years to record the history of the long disappeared Balmain Catholic cemetery Part of this project has been to try and re-create something of the long lost burial register, so if you have any knowledge of burials at the cemetery (or have any queries about possible burials) I would be delighted to hear from yoy When completed copies of the history will be donated to Leichhardt Council library and Sydney Diocesan archives here's hoping Patrick Callaghan PS The Balmain Catholic cemetery is not the better known one which was located on Norton St. Leichhardt, but was a small cemetery, around 2000 burials, which was located where St. Columba'schurch, school and presbytery now stands in Elswick St. Leichhardt ________________________________________________________ GoConnect Internet Access - $13.95* for 30 hrs per month Unlimited Downloads Be part of the advance force - JOIN NOW! http://www.goconnect.com.au *Terms and Conditions Apply.

    3. Hi! Most passenger lists etc are held at the relevant state archives. Which port or state did your father arrive at? As far as telephone numbers go to www.whitepages.com.au and you will be able to enter your name in the search engine. Obviously if it is a common surname it would be better also entering a town where you want to search. 1. [A.G.R. ] Why do we do genealogy?
    2. Annie, Bill and Liam Stuart
    3. I have posted this before but just thought I would pass it on again as inspiration for any new genealogists. I didn't write it but says it all for me. The Story Tellers..... We are the chosen. My feelings are in each family there is one who seems called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their ones and make them live again, to tell the family story and to feel that omehow they know and approve. To me, doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead, breathing life into all who have gone before. We are the story tellers of the tribe. All tribes have one. We have been called, as it were, by our genes. Those who have gone before cry out to us: Tell our story. So, we do. In finding them, we somehow find ourselves. How mny graves have I stood before now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told the ancestors, "You have a wonderful family, you would be proud of us?" How many times have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow there was love there for me? I cannot say. It goes beyond just documenting facts. It goes to who am I and why do I do the things I do? It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever to weeds and indifference and saying I can't let this happen. The bones here are bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh. It goes to doing something about it. It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish. How they contributed to what we are today. It goes to respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or giving up, their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their family. It goes to deep pride that they fought to make and keep us a Nation. It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they were doing it for us. That we might be born who we are. That we might remember them. So we do. With love and caring and scribing each fact of their existence, because we are them and they are us. So, as a scribe called, I tell the story of my family. It is up to that one called in the next generation to answer the call and take their place in the long line of family storytellers. That, is why I do my family genealogy, and that is what calls those young and old to step up and put flesh on the bones. ( Unknown Author ) Best wishes Annie Stuart billannieliam@ozemail.com.au

    3. Hi Ruth Thanks for the thought, I do not rule anything out but if you can't find in any of the BDM records and nobody reports a gravesite one thinks of possible arrival by sea anywhere in Australia, maybe jumped ship, incorrect name, no or destroyed records, etc. An added problem is that Gippsland is such a large area to search and the information on the marriage certificate may be incorrect anyhow. I really am beginning to think that I am "grasping at straws". Regards, Geoff At 07:55 PM 4/23/03 +1000, you wrote: >Hi Geoff, sorry No connection to my tree.
