    3. Hi to you all on the Lists, Thank you all for your answers and I do know that my Aunt was in Newcastle NSW for 30 years and when I read the Death Certificate for 1932 I wondered then if it was a Catholic Institution as such. Frances ROBINSON's death certicate states 30 years in Newcastle NSW and 33 years in Victoria. My Grandmother Alice SMITH nee ROBINSON named her daughter Frances in 1885. The Informant was E V ELLIS Authorised Agent 1 Latrobe Street,Melbourne and this name is also as the Minister and Witness of Burial was M E CLOWES her occupation was listed as Household Duties and not married. 3. Hello Alice, While I don't know any information about the particular asylum you mentioned in Victoria, the name "Magdalan/ Magdalene" was usually given to homes for "unmarried mothers" or girls deemed to be "in moral danger" or "fallen or wayward" girls. The name Magdalan/Magdalene was taken from the bible in which Mary of Magdalene was a prostitute who became a follower of Jesus. As a result, women who followed the trade became known as "Magdalan's" and then the term was applied to any girl/woman whose "morals" were in question. 3. Thanks for this Sheelagh. It seems that all the SATCHERs who came to Australia 1870-1880s were related. I can locate three SATCHERs so far (1xNSW, 2xQLD) and they are all related. One in QLD married a LESLIE in Qld in 1880 and has dropped off the radar totally after having Henry Giles LESLIE in 1881 and James LESLIE in 1883. LESLIE is a fairly common name and SATCHER is not in Australia. I am hoping that someone has Emily Ruth LESLIE (nee SATCHER) in their Australian line and we can exchange information.
