You went to considerable effort to help me, and you were probably wondering why I had not responded. So here it is. Thank you for your help. Yes, you found the right/correct people. I am hot on the trail of the family now. I found one family historian who is not directly related, only by marriage, but she was able to fill in a few holes and give me other leads. I checked your web site and, alas, there were no names there that were mine except I do have Dale WATTS as a fifth cousin in Victoria. Have you contacted him? This web site is just wonderful. Cheers, Dona MORGAN KERNS Family Historian You wrote: Hi Dona, You don't mention a time period for your Boddy family. There is a Herbert BODDY on the W.A. Karrakatta Cemetery indexes. In my research I found that the greedy ship's Masters accepted the ten pounds landing fee so that the Chinese could disembark in Melbourne but instead of letting them disembark in Melbourne they took them on to Robe in S.A. and made them swim ashore. Even if they did get Naturalised and purchase land they could not always remember the name of the ship they arrived on. Marie

    3. Ian, You might find that he came in via Adelaide. Victoria charged a levy on Chinese immigrants and so many stayed on board ship and disembarked at Adelaide and WALKED back to the goldfields to save the money. I have seen many shipping lists where the Chinese are not named - only entries like "17 Chinese from Hong Kong". Did your man ever own land? If so he should have been naturalised and the papers for that usually gives the chip of arrival.
