    2. Garry A Wilson
    3. Dear list By definition (or at least as defined in my Little Oxford dictionary) ones's ancestor is any person from whom one's parents descend. I was always under the impression that implicit in this is that an ancestor was deceased. What do others think? Maybe Pam is in a lucky position having an ancestor wanting help. None of my ancestor's are in that privileged or fortunate position. Not this side of the grave anyway. Or was it simply a case that Mary Ann's descendent was able to linger longer? Garry > > > Subject: [A.G.R. ] JAMES ODELL > Date: Wed, 19 Sep 2001 01:36:25 +1000 > From: <[email protected]> > To: [email protected] > > Hi All > > James ODELL, baptised 24 July 1831 Tingrith, Bedfordshire, married to Mary Ann Linger 23 July 1854 at Tingrith. > James is listed as being killed in Australia. 1. [A.G.R. ] Re: History+Little Bay Cemetery=Prince Henry Coast Hospital, NSW.
    2. Amanda Curran
    3. Prince Henry {Coast} Hospital, Little Bay, NSW History: In 1881, following an outbreak of smallpox in the inner suburbs of the city of Sydney, the government of the day decided to establish a hospital at Little Bay which was far enough away from the city to ensure that the unfortunate people with this killer disease would be effectively guarantined from the rest of the populace. The site soon became Sydney's infectious diseases hospital and housed patients suffering from typhoid fever, bubonic plaque and leprosy as well as all other infectious diseases. It was inevitable that deaths would occur and so an area of land to the south of the hospital was set aside as a cemetery and a number of patients and staff members who died from these diseases were interred there. Anyone suffering from serious infectious diseases was admitted to Prince Henry Hospital, and if they died of one of these infectious diseases they had to be buried in the hospital cemetery. Therefore this cemetery is rather unique in that the persons buried therein did not necessarily come from the area. Many of he headstones have not survived, and many are unable to be read, but each headstone has been fully transcribed if possible, and of course, some of the people who were buried there would never have had a headstone in the first place. The headstones are widely scattered over a large area and thee are no numbered rows, therefore it has not been possible to list them in any particular order. I personally have spoken to Prince Henry Hospital concerning records of admittance's to no avail. Best wishes Amanda

    3. Thanks to Ada who has most likely assisted me in identifying a photo studio where a photograph of my gg grandfather was taken - it appears to be John Paul CAROLIN of Piper Street KYNETON, Victoria who operated between 1873 and 1874. What I am wondering is whether there is anyone else out there who may have a photo from the same studio, of one of their own ancestors. Part of the writing on my photograph is faded and only the "C" and the "LIN" is visable. I would like to confirm that this is the correct studio . . . is anyone able to assist me? Hello Pam, If you can afford it, I think the only answer is to get new copies of the old certificate and compare them with the alterrations. You have the registration numbers, so there is no search involved. A member of our group had a certificate where the relative had made corrections, had photocopied the resultant "correct" certificate, and then passed it on to relatives. Genealogists cannot proceed on illegally alterred certificates and you owe it to your own research to gain a certified copy of the original certificate. > My query is this - does anyone know how to remove either sort of >ink without damaging the paper? 3. Amanda, Thank you for posting this information. I heard a story recently which connects these two ladies with my Gt grandmother, and was about to start looking for information on them. Whilst I had heard of Tilly, I didn't know too much about her, and I had never heard of Kate. My Gt Grandparents (Robert & Kate Gordon) had the Hotel Gordon in Goulburn. I was visiting my aunt recently, and the hotel came up, and it was mentioned that Kate & Tilly were friends of my Gt grandmother, and were regular visitors at the hotel.
