    2. Thanks Robynne, I'll give them a try. Thanks again for your help. Around the 1930s, some Australian relations sent my grandmother in England a newspaper cutting (I think it was probably the Sydney Morning Herald) about an Alfred Stevens who was being created a Judge. Alfred was a very common recurring name in my Stevens family, but then they are both fairly common names. However, apparently he looked the spitting image of my great uncle Alf (also Alfred Stevens). I think he was around the same age, too (50s). If anyone can point me in the right direction to find descendants of this man, I'd be very grateful. I wrote to the newspaper some months ago but had no reply, so I'm hoping someone on the List can help. > Thanks very much in advance. > Joanna in dark and rainy Coventry, UK. > > > ==== AUSSIE-GEN-RESEARCH Mailing List ==== > Have you visited AUSSIE-GEN-RESEARCH Web site yet? > Please do? 3. under heading BRUNY ISLAND Situated at the mouth of the Derwent River, Tas., is about 30 miles long. It was discovered by TASMAN in 1642, and was subsequently visited by FURNEAUX (1773), COOK (1777), COX (1789) and BLIGH (1788 & 1792). In 1792 Admiral BRUNI (OR BRUNY) d' ENTRECASTEAUX, while charting the vicinity, gave the island his Christian name. He paid a second visit in 1793. Tow months latter Commodore Sir John HAYES, apparently being ignorant of the visit by d'ENTRECASTEAUX, name the area "William Pitts's Island", after "the Great Commoner". Later cartographers, however recognized the Frenchman's priority and the name "Bruny" has persisted. The native name for the island was "LUNAWARRA-ALONNA", and this is preserved in two postal towns, ALONNAH and LUNAWANNA, both in the southern part of the island. The island is mountainous and forest covered. Sawmilling and orcharding are the main occupations of the few settlers. ¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ Regards, Mary of Melbourne FOSTER, Coventry - PRITCHARD,Coventry - GEOFFREY, Middlesex - ORCHARD, Warminster, Wiltshire STUART,Glasgow, - EDWARDS,England, GREATZ,NSW - PFITZNER, Prussia WILLIAMS,CUNNINGHAM, HUMPHREYS,MULVIHILL - All to Victoria Australia

    3. from Grolier Encyclopaedia under heading BRIBIE ISLAND In Moreton Bay, Qld, 20 miles long and from one to five miles wide, it is now a Brisbane seaside resort. When Matthew FLINDERS landed here in 1799, he saw his first dugong which he took to be a sea-lion, he also had an encounter with the natives. The BRIBIE Islanders, now extinct, were a savage race who terrorized the mainland tribes. It was a BRIBIE that the explorer John OXLEY in 1823 met the shipwrecked convict, Thomas PAMPHLETT (q.v.) who guided him to the entrance of the Brisbane River. The small town of Bribie lies at the south-west corner of the island; two navigation lights are maintained at the northern end. ¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ Regards, Mary of Melbourne FOSTER, Coventry - PRITCHARD,Coventry - GEOFFREY, Middlesex - ORCHARD, Warminster, Wiltshire STUART,Glasgow, - EDWARDS,England, GREATZ,NSW - PFITZNER, Prussia WILLIAMS,CUNNINGHAM, HUMPHREYS,MULVIHILL - All to Victoria Australia

It has an estimated length of 340 miles. It was discovered in 1818 by George William EVANS (q.v.) when he was with John OXLEY'S expedition and was explored by Charles STURT in 1829. I have just come back from Echuca and the Family History place was unable to help although they tried very hard.
