Hi everyone, Please excuse the cross postings... Due to moving house & other family commitments, I will be unsubscribing on Wednesday (7th Nov) for a few months. This will be quite a challenge, after reading mail every night for 3 yrs![grin] However, I can still be contacted via my email address - [email protected] I would like to thank everyone who has helped me over the last few years, and hope I have also been of help to people along the way. Kind regards, Sherrie Blackman. Sydney. Gently as a butterfly may happiness touch your heart today....
Hi All, First of all, my apologies to anyone who gets multiple copies of this message on various lists, or who have already heard this story. I am at a total dead end and am grasping at straws, most of which seem to disintergrate as soon as I get hold of them <bg>. First I will tell you what we know from actual documents. Frederick BEATTIE enlisted in the Royal Marines on 26th June 1847 at Killybegs in Donegal, Ireland. We have full records of his marriage to Ann(e) Willey in 1861, births of various children, emigration to Australia in 1883 and death in 1884. (can't find where he's buried, but that's another story.) Now for what we don't know for sure. On Frederick's enlistment he gives his parents' names as Alexander BEATTIE and Margaret MILLER. He states that he was 19 years, making his DOB 1827 or 28. He also states that his place of birth was "Parish of Killaghtee in or near the town of Hollybrook in the County of Donegal". His occupation is given as Labourer. Well, extensive searches on the net, by mail and in person have failed to find any record of his birth or of his parents' births, deaths, marriage or of them ever having lived in that area. Mmmmm. There is also an adress for Alexander and Margaret of No 1 Albert Place, Brandon Street, Malworth, London. I am not sure what date this address relates to or the accuracy of it, though. So, what is the theory. Did he change his name? If so, I can only think that I might as well give up now. On the other hand, it has also been suggested that Alexander and Margaret may have moved from Scotland as many apparently did in the late 1700s early 1800s, and may then have moved to England, and so were not born, married or died in the area. Well, there it is. If you have any ideas where I can chase more ghosts, or if you have any information that might help, I would love to hear from you. TIA Regards, Jenny in (mostly) sunny Central Queensland
Hi all, Now this story might sound a bit confusing, but if the subject means something to you, bear with me and hopefully it will make sense to someone. Recently there was a TPI Association Meeting in Rockhampton, Queensland. The President of the Sunshine Coast branch, Jim McDonald, was there. He told a lady the name of the complex where he lives and she said "There's a McFarlane living there." Well, there are actually 2 McFarlanes living there, one of whom is my father. Unfortunately, Jim did not get the lady's name. So if you are her, or know anyone who would have been at the meeting and who is researching or interested in the McFarlane Clan, could you please put me in touch and I can provide contact details for Dad. Confused? Then I guess you're not the person I'm looking for. Regards, Jenny in (mostly) sunny Central Queensland

I am hoping there might be a site that I can check out a horse that was owned and riden by Walter Pegrum in a Melbourne Cup. It would have been the early 1900s, and I have been told that they came last. Many thanks Susan Jones nee Pegrum Sydney
Susan, Have you searched through Google search engine! I always do a Google search first and usually my questions are answered! Maybe try the VRC website and see if they have archives online ~ they'd have an archivist for sure that you could contact! Hope this helps, Cherie On the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. > I am hoping there might be a site that I can check out a horse that was owned and riden by Walter Pegrum in a Melbourne Cup. Hello Listers A Scottish cousin has emailed me about some family births that took place in Australia in the 1840s with the family returning to Scotland after that. The parents were Robert LEIGHTON and Elizabeth Smart DAVIS m. 1839 (presumably in Australia). The record doesn't mention in which State the births too place, but there is reference on the web site of the National Library of Australia to 8 letters written by an Elizabeth Smart LEIGHTON to her friend Dorothy WHITE in England, referring to pioneering life in Parramatta and Bathurst. This seems to be the same Elizabeth. The children are: 1. Alexander Robert LEIGHTON, b. cir 1840, died 30 JUN 1859 (but she doesn't say where). 2. Catherine E LEIGHTON, b. cir 1842 (married 1860 in Scotland so 1859 Death probably Scotland too). 3. Wilhelmina Davis LEIGHTON, b. cir 1843. 4. Eliza LEIGHTON, b. cir 1844 (d 1 NOV 1854 - ? Scotland) 5. Georgiana LEIGHTON, b cir 1847 (d 12 MAR 1851 - ? Scotland) 6. Lucy J LEIGHTON b. cir 1848. Is there a way on-line that my cousin in Scotland can check NSW immigration records? Any help to find this family or anything about it would be most gratefully received. Many thanks. Pam [email protected] Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia
Searching for information on Margaret and Bridget Power, who arrived in Australia from Tipperary possibly about 1860. They lived in the Moruya area where Margaret married William Quinn in 1866, and Bridget married John Corbett in 1867. Any help at all on these families would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards, Maureen.
Would any listers have information on Thomas Flood. I understand he owned two of the main hotels in the Moruya area in the 1800's. Thanks in advance for any help. Maureen.

Last night I posted an URL to the list regarding names of Australians who were in the Yukon. Today I had an email from a man living in Canada pointing out that the Yukon is not in Alaska as perhaps the URL indicated but is in Canada. He has agreed that I post his comments to the list. I am sure you find his comments interesting His name is Dave. We hope this helps. Hello, I am following up a lead which may of may not connect to my tree, but we have to check these things out as they might, so I was wondering if anyone has any of these names connected with any of their tree. First off I have a Emma Waghorne aged 34, a Lilley/Lilly Waghorne 7 yrs, and a Helen/Ellen Waghorne 6yrs coming into Australia from London on the ship "Windsor Castle" on the 21/6/1876 into Mortein Bay. Then I found Emma's remarriage to a Thomas William Nichoels in QLD 12/2/1877 (There is various spelling for Nichoels). I found Lilly's mar in Brisbane 1886-1893 to a William Cleghorn Taylor and Helen's mar Brisbane 1886-1893 to a John C Thompson. So I was wondering if anyone had these in one of their branches as I would like to see if they had any information on the three women from England as looking at them and the times they could possibly tie into mine, but as I know we have to check everything to prove that they are mine. if this is them then this is Emma's second marriage and her maiden name is HANCOCK, if that helps anyone. And if Lilly and Helen are her daugthers which I think they are, then their parents are Emma (Hancock) and Frederick WAGHORNE. Hope you can understand this. Leona Waghorne.
