Hi All I have just recently purchased a death transcription for Richard Thomas who died 1870 aged 73, in Liverpool, Nsw, he came to the colony in 1838 on the Bengal Merchant, born England. Unfortunately it is the wrong Richard Thomas for me. If anyone is interested in this transcription could you please get in touch with me. Pam Qld
I realize this is an Australian research list - but I have been on the Scots Origins database twice - and look forward to another go with it. I am not sure what records you are looking up - but I found that there would be a chart come up and to the right hand side would be a column for the parish the even took place in - and some of the events did have more than year - but they all did provide a number for ordering of certs. Also before you enter into the paying portion of the site - there is a free search for surname which can be very beneficial for checking out surname variations that I have found helpful as well. Anyone doing a tree that includes the name acres or Akers I have set up a web site for the Descendants of Thomas Akers a first fleet convict. http://www.shoal.net.au/~annette/acres
I have come across an ancestor who lost a coat with their pension book inside. The problem is that I don't know as to whether it is the husband or the wife. the year is 1919. Were women entitled to pensions back then? Are there any sites on this subject? Anthony B. Pitkin www.users.bigpond.com/PITKINA/
Would someone have the web address for the Scottish BD&M Index that is on line please? Regards, Mary

It goes from Sydney, via Auckland, Honolulu, then San Francisco. Then they went overland somehow, it does not say how. The ship was the City of Sydney and it was under contract with the N.S.W. Government and the N.Z. Government for the mails. It is the only one advertising for San Francisco. Hope this helps. Jackie.......... In 1870's what became known as "Overland Mail Service" was instigated in the US. The rail had opened across America which meant that international travellers from the eastern States of Amercia - and even England - did not have to tavel down the length of America and across below Africa to reach Australia. The mail was sent from London via this route. This had the effect of shortening the sea voyage to 4 weeks to Sydney. Doubt it from England. My gg wrote in a letter to the east coast of US that the last letter he had received from Massachusetts had taken only 4 weeks. This was via San Fran. and was 1903. I dont know about the England bit for sure, can't imagine why crossing the Atlantic then the US then the Pacific was more appealing than going down the Atlantic across the INdian Ocean to Australia. Thanks for the route to San Fran Jacqui Denise ----- Original Message ----- From: "G & J Cunningham" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, November 11, 2001 3:57 PM Subject: Re: [A.G.R. ] Shipping 1800's > > To anyone's knowledge did steamers from San Francisco go to Melbourne > during the latter half of the 1800s. G'day Denise, I think they did go to Melbourne but, Try this list. [email protected] I am not saying it will help but it's worth a try. Also http://prov.vic.gov.au/indexes.htm It is the Public Record Office of Victoria & has UnAssisted indexes from 1852 - 1889. Your Ancestor could be listed on them. Good Luck Marie Young in Sydney
Thank you Marie. I hve the Cd's myself and have found some, but not ALL the trips. I know the years and very close dates for some, but now need to go to the State LIbrary. Having been down this track before, and know how much there is to wade thru, I was hoping to start by eliminating one of the States. Looks like I may well have to do both. Many thanks, will try the rootsweb URL, regards Denise ----- Original Message ----- From: "Maree Young" <[email protected]> To: <> Sent: Sunday, November 11, 2001 2:04 PM Subject: [A.G.R. ] Ships from USA. > G'day Denise, > > I think they did go to Melbourne but, Try this list. > [email protected] > > I am not saying it will help but it's worth a try. > > Also > > http://prov.vic.gov.au/indexes.htm > > It is the Public Record Office of Victoria & has UnAssisted indexes from 1852 - 1889. To anyone's knowledge did steamers from San Francisco go to Melbourne during the latter half of the 1800s. I know they went at least as far as Sydney and via New Zealand. I would be interested also if any one knows of a website which shows their route to Australia. Did they go to Hawaii, Fiji as well as NZealand? Have several entries to find from San Francisco and as I don't have exact dates, only years I would like to know the best place to start looking NSW or Vic. The couple lived in Victoria and I am aware that they did leave Sydney for San Francisco on several trips. Denise Looking for -- HAEFFNER - Germany-Vic.Aust. CONWAY - Ireland-Vic. Aust. Hi listers, If anyone needs help with lookups in the Emerald area, I may be able to help - eg cemetary or newspaper records. Please email me and I will see what I can do. The local paper does not allow photocopying of old papers, but I can do transcriptions. They might allow photos to be taken, will have to ask. Hope this will help someone. Dear Listers, I apologise to those of you who received this query on the Melbourne list recently (no takers). I am trying to find out something about the above hotel which was in existence in 1879. If anyone knows anything about it at all, or can suggest where I should look I would be most grateful. Regards, Beverley NSW

Hello, I am researching three early BATEUP families in NSW. Thomas and Martha BATEUP were here by 1839, when they had their son James. Esau and Anne BATEUP were here by 1844, when they had their son John. Alfred and Elizabeth BATEUP were married in NSW in 1853 I'd be interested to know if anyone has researched these families. They may be related - there seems to be some cross-naming in the names of the children of the first two families. Best wishes Sybil Cameron

Hi, Dad reckons he's found out where this cemetary used to be. Apparently it was somewhere under the current Storey Bridge, but no records pre 1900 with either Qld Gen Society or the Anglican Church. No use to me, but might help someone. Will let you know if I find out any more. Jenny in (mostly) sunny Central Queensland
