    3. Does anyone know how one goes about finding information on property ownership in England? According to a birth certificate for my great grandfather - Thomas STENNER, was born in Bedminster at 7 Bedminster Place in 1875. His mother - Sarah STENNER, has not listed any father for Thomas and so tracking down further information on them both is proving a little difficult. A search of the 1881 British Census says that 7 Bedminster Place was still in existance, although I would be interested to see who actually owned the property. Any clues or advice greatly received. It was a cold night and after being wounded we had to cross through an icy cold stream of water, and then were taken through our entanglements into the trenches. The extent of my wounds are: Two channels through the calf of my right leg, in which the doctors have had tubes for four days; a couple of minor wounds where pieces of bullets have entered, and also a flesh wound in the back. The doctors removed bits of nickel and lead four days ago. Just now I had soup, chicken, vegetables, pudding and milk for dinner. However, I am off to England in a few days and don't know how I shall fare there. I was billeted in a French woman's house a while, where the children were unruly and noisy. ON my returning from duty one day I told the woman in my best French that I would like two hours' sleep. She immediately brought me 12 eggs having mistaken two hours for 12 eggs. 1. [A.G.R. ] WW1 Gallipoli Hymn
    2. David Collyer
    3. Dear Friends, As I received sooo many requests for the words to the hymn I have unearthed, which was written by "one of our Boys" at Gallipoli, I have decided to type the words to the list. This was originally published by the "City Mission" about 1917, and as such, I'm sure you can all use it freely. I shall type it exactly as it appears. It was found pasted on the back inside cover of the Presbyterian Hymn book belonging to my Great Grandfather, William McGARVIE (1858 - 1922) junior, of Pomborneit, Victoria, Australia. William and Jean Keith (nee ARCHER) McGARVIE had only 3 sons: Keith (1891-1969) Sgt. B Coy, 8th Aust. Infantry Battalion; MLA for Hampden; David (1892-1979) - my Grandfather - Pte. 8th Light Horse and sole survivor of their charge at the Battle of the Nek on 8 Aug 1915; Dairy Farmer; Hector Archer (1896 - 8 Jul 1917) 2 Lt. BEF, KIA Belgium, buried Dikkebus near Ypres/Jeper). "REMEMBER LORD" (from Gallipoli) Tune: "Lead Kindly Light" Thou who hast all Thy people in Thy sight, To Thee we come. Be Thou their guide, their comfort, and their light, Afar from home; Keep Thou their souls, in steadfastness and right - Remember, Lord, Australis sons to-night. Gone from the humble cottage in the dell, From home, sweet home; Gone from the dear ones whom they love so well To face the storm; Gone from the mansion to defend the right - Remember, Lord, Australia's sons tonight. Sons are now dying, 'tis the cost of war, Have mercy, Lord; Wilt Thou prepare them ere they cross the bar? Have mercy, Lord; Burst Thou Death's gloom by Heaven's celestial light - Remember, Lord, Australia's sons tonight. Be Thou their refuge in the darkest hour, Be Thou their stay; Stretch forth Thy hand, show Thine almight power In Thine own way; Thou didst on Galilee reveal Thy might - Oh! Comfort, Lord, Australia's sons tonight. (These lines were written by ONE OF OUR BOYS at the front and forwarded to the Mission by a friend. They will be sung in our Mission Halls on Sunday evenings. Will our readers pray that a blessing may accompany the message). Reprint from City Mission Record. Norman Bros. Printers.

There are both 1891 and 1841 Census records available. 3. Hi Shirley, I use a guy in England named Peter Smith for my research over there. His email addy is: Peter D Smith <[email protected]> I have always found him to do a great job. He sent me a copy of the census page my ancestors were on, and it had so much information on it. I was lucky that on census night, there were other relatives visiting, and I also got their names, ages, relationship to head of the house, Occupations, birthplaces, etc. He is not very expensive either. I think I paid $20 (which includes an email, giving you the info, then the actual copies by snail mail - postage was included in that price.) I think his charges have gone up to $24 but I still think its a bargain. You send your money to his agent in Australia, which saves sending money overseas. Good luck. On his birth certificate his mother is listed as Sarah Stenner and his father as UNKNOWN. I've know idea how to go about conducting any other searches for Thomas . . . Tom married Gertrude Sturgess in England (unsure of the date at this point in time) and they then came out to Australia pre 1913 where they had the first of their 9 children. Tom and Gertrude both died here in Australia, Tom in 1965 and Gertrude in 1981. Am wondering if it is possible to search for a census record for Sarah and her son Thomas and whether there were any other siblings? Any guidance greatly received . . .
