    3. There is a program called Pro Show Gold, which you can use to convert digital images to a VCD which can then be played in a DVD player. Or on the same disc it can be set to autorun on a computer without having to load the software to the computer first. But it can only be used for images, so your text would have to be saved as an Image (display time is adjustable), but you could do Voice over, so may be you could narrate it :-). 1. Re: [A.G.R. ] Chinese Exservicemen & Women
    2. Ian Welch
    3. G'day Deb Thanks re Dr Gett, the second person to mention him. First step is the original wedding certificate. You can get that from the Public Records Office in Sydney. Costs about $20 or so. Once you have the date of the wedding, you can look up the Wagga papers around that date, say three months either side, and see if there is any mention of him or the wedding. You will probably find the paper on microfilm at the local public library or failing that, at the State Library of NSW, or maybe, the nearest university library. Using that, you can get birth and death certificates from the same place, generation after generation. Lee is, unfortunately, one of the names that is both English or actually Cornish in origin, and Chinese. Without the Chinese characters you will not track him. Once you have identified your William Lee, get in touch with the Australian War Memorial. There are 42 or so Lee's who served in the Boer War but only two with William. I found one but he was from WA. It is easy enough to access www.awm.gov.au and go to biographical databases, nominal rolls, Boer War. You may also find a William Lee among the WW1 blokes on the relevant Nominal Roll. Good hunting Ian >you could try contacting DR GETT, he was a childrens DR at the old >Childrens Hospital - Alexandria, he was my childrens dr, 84 - 92 he is off >chinese decent, > >as I am, but as my great grandfather changed his chinese name, I haven't >been able trace what is was, > >his name was James Lee born Canton, married a Australian Girl in the 1800's >her name Kate Webster, married in Wagga Wagga, moved to Tumut and had >several children, one of which is my Grandfather William Lee, who am I told >served in the Boer War, born 1884, as my father has passed away, I can't >verify that he was in the Boer War, althougth i did find a William Lee - NSW >bushman listed in the Boer War, but don't know how to research further only >new to this, > >any help would be great > >Deb >----- Original Message ----- >From: Ian Welch <ianwelch@coombs.anu.edu.au> >To: <AUSSIE-GEN-RESEARCH-L@rootsweb.com> >Sent: Thursday, February 13, 2003 1:01 PM >Subject: [A.G.R. ] Chinese Exservicemen & Women > > >> As most folk are probably aware, I am preparing a database of >> servicepeople of Chinese ethnic origin who have served in the forces >> from what is now pre 1885 (Mei Quong Tart of Sydney served in the NSW >> Volunteer Artillery - any information on his service?) to Vietnam and >> later. >> >> For years there has been a belief that Chinese, presumably persons of >> Chinese appearance, were not enlisted in WWI. 3. It can be done and is an excellent way of avoiding printing, postage, etc. I suggest you talk with your local computer shop. You will need a properly set up original and a CD burner. Go for it. On the other hand, you might find life easier, and possibly cheaper, to print it off A4 and have it bound with spiral binding. A plastic binding machine is less costly than a CD burner although CDisks are very cheap, usually less than 50c at places like Woolworths. Another, and perhaps better or additional way is to turn your files into a website. Look up the phone book for a local computer club or search the Web by inserting your town/suburbs name and seeing what you get. Good luck Ian -- ianwelch@coombs.anu.edu.au

    2. Ian Welch
    3. G'day David Many thanks for a great note that really fills in gaps. One of the problems in trying to track folk is to identify all the family from the original Chinese ancestor. We have up to six generations in some families. Some simply don't know the origins of their name, other than they might recognise it 'sounds' Chinese. In other cases, their descent comes from an original male through daughters and the early ancestor is lost unless the family actively chases their genealogy. I hope lots of others will follow your example. Cheers Ian -- ianwelch@coombs.anu.edu.au
