    1. Thomas Webster
    2. Helen Mitchell
    3. This is my first posting to the list. I am searching for Thomas Webster who was born in Bendigo Vic. in 1870. He was a miner by occupation. He was shown on his mother's Vic. death certificate as being 53 in 1923, but after that I can find no trace of him in Victoria. His parents were Thomas Webster and Annie O'Halloran. It seems likely that he went either to WA or SA to work in the mines. His whereabouts were unknown to his family as far back as 1928. Hoping that someone could offer some assistance with my mystery man. Any tips/help will be very much appreciated. Best wishes, Helen Mitchell

    1. missing mail?
    2. Sandra
    3. Missing Rootsweb mailing list post? There is a way to retrieve these. (I keep two of each digest in the respective folder so that when the next one comes in I know whether there is any missing because of those digest numbers.) The Digest mode means that all posts to the list are contained in the body of one email that is numbered. The List mode sends you individual emails for all the posts to the list. First, if you are subscribed in the List Mode then you will need to unsubscribe and subscribe in the Digest Mode. The address is: (Insert list name)-D-request@rootsweb.com Don't forget to unsubscribe from the list mode first - the address is: (Insert list name)-L-request@rootsweb.com If the numbers don't correspond then you send for the archive that is missing. You can only obtain the archived digest if you are subscribed in the digest mode. To obtain the archived digest send an email to: (Insert list name)-D-request@rootsweb.com in the subject line type ONLY the word archive in the body of the email type ONLY the following ... get volume05/*** (replace the *** with the number of the digest that you want) There is NO SPACE between the word volume and the 05. (The 05 signifies the year 2005.) 3. Excerpt from Rootsweb Ezine ___________________________________ I have subscribed to the Rootsweb Review for a number of years now, but many of you may not be aware of it. It is a weekly e-zine provides news about RootsWeb.com, its new databases, mailing lists, home pages, and websites. It also includes stories and research tips from its readers around the globe. Although it is US based it is worth subscribing to and is free. This week (and it is often repeated) one section talks about Mailing Lists 1a. LEARNING ABOUT MAILING LISTS: http://lists.rootsweb.com/ When you subscribe to a large, and/or especially active RootsWeb Mailing List, what should you expect? You will receive every e-mail message that other Mailing List members send to the list, whether or not those messages pertain to your immediate research. There is no way for you to selectively receive only messages that are of personal interest to you. If you are subscribed in list or mail mode, each message will be received as a separate e-mail as soon as the poster sends the message to the list. If you are subscribed in digest mode, you will receive several messages grouped together in a digest -- fewer separate e-mails, but delayed a bit until there are a sufficient number of messages to be bundled into a digest and sent out to you. You will be able to post a message on the list about some aspect of your genealogical research involving the subject matter of the list. You may ask for help or information, or you may post data or respond to someone else's query -- participating in the ongoing discussion on the list. Those who share their genealogical information usually receive more information back than those who only ask for research help or post generic queries. To make the most efficient use of a Mailing List, take time to review messages posted to it (even those that on the surface have no connection to your research) as there may be a clue or connection you wouldn't notice at first glance. When posting messages choose a brief, but informative, subject line. You want your message to attract the attention of other list members who may be quickly scanning the list messages for items of interest to them. Give them a reason to read your messages. Put sufficient information in the message body of your post so that others can determine quickly and easily if they might have information for you or can establish a connection to your family. What you can learn from subscribing to a Mailing List is often directly related to the thought and preparation you put into your list participation. Don't sit back and expect someone to feed you answers or do your research. The greatest value of Mailing Lists is in the sharing. ******************************************* Permission to reprint articles from RootsWeb Review is granted unless specifically stated otherwise, provided: (1) the reprint is used for non-commercial, educational purposes; and (2) the following notice appears at the end of the article: Previously published in RootsWeb Review: Vol. 6, No. 23, 4 June 2003.
