He was employed as assistant surveyor with the Lands Department. He was known to Bishop CLUNE and former WA Governor, Gerald STRICKLAND. In 1914 he enlisted with the 11th battalion as Private No.157 and was killed during the Gallipoli landing. His fiancee was Gertie (surname probably KINSMAN) from Claremont, a very good pianist. First child William was born in South Australia in 1897. Four more were all born in Albany - Claude (1898), Ernest James (1900), Ellen Mary (1902) and Rose Josephine (1904). Herman had at least two daughters whose photographs the writer remembers seeing as a child. Janet was born in Queensland in 1860 and died in WA in 1950. Fred was born in 1855, and died in WA in 1902. They had four children: James (d.1946), Agnes Cecelia (m. Coate), Sarah Elizabeth (m. Peter BERTOLA was one of the original 10 pupils and hopes to hold a gathering of ex-students and teachers (the originals in particular), their families and friends, at the school site in early October. ANTI-NUCLEAR GROUPS : People for Nuclear Disarmament WA has received a small grant to write its history and that of its predecessor, Campaign Against Nuclear Energy. The group is having difficulty getting good photographs of the Palm Sunday rallies that were held in Perth in March and April every year from 1983 through the 1990s. Images and photographs of the rallies would be appreciated for the book. SHEPHERD'S GARAGE : The writer's father worked at Shepherd's Garage in Stirling Highway, Claremont for four years before joining the RAAF in September 1939 at the start of World War II. A photograph of the garage and/or shops nearby is sought for family history but the location of the Stirling Highway site is unknown. Does anybody remember it? The business was owned by the writer's great-uncle and previously stood opposite the Claremont Railway Station in the 1920s. Any information appreciated. Tel: (07) 4128 7900. mailto:[email protected] 11TH BATTALION BOOK LAUNCH : Private Walter ROBINS DCM and Frances SKINNER met in England during Walter's convalescence from war injuries in late 1917 and were married on December 31 that year. Their joy was short-lived when Walter was killed in action on May 13, 1918 after his return to the front with the 11th Battalion in February 1918. He is remembered with so many other courageous West Australians in Ian Gill's new book, Fremantle to France - 11th Battalion AIF 1914-19, to be launched at the Fremantle Town Hall, William Street, Fremantle on Sunday, August 17 at 2pm.
