Jimmy was believed to be an Afghan or a West Indian and used to push a handcart which was equipped with a grindstone. His services were required by housewives or their servants, who would take their knives to their gates and summon him on hearing his distinctive call. Photographs are sought as soon as possible for a book about his life (1860-1942) now in its final draft. George STEVENS went to Esperance in charge of the telegraph station as a 17-year-old youth. He married Anne GRAHAM in Eucla in 1884 and their children were Ernest William, Emily Marianne, Eva Mabel, Elsie Jane, Eucla Graham, Olive Grace, Queechy Dorrit, Bertha Kathleen, George Kenneth (Ken), and the writer's father, Frank Chapman. In 1908, the family returned to Perth and George became secretary of the Civil Service Association until he retired in 1932. He was mayor of Claremont during the four years of World War I.
